I don't remember the hospital gift shop kid but it wasn't Jed or Jer.

It was Jason - remember him, the one laying in a pool of his own blood? His parents don't.

I can't believe I forgot the ultimate embarrassment - 18 kids on a parade float, with Michelle proudly standing in front nursing Jordyn. It was everything that's wrong with that family as well as America all rolled into one.

OMG I must have missed that episode. Now if the float had been titled "Modesty" that would have been absolutely perfect.

Expanding on the birthday theme:

-Poor Johanna having to share a party with Mackenzie and getting no attention or special treatment. They kept saying "and Hannie". It was clear she was an after thought.

-Joy's poor excuse for a birthday party that consisted of a train ride and ice cream on the go. They just shoved her party into an already full day as if it was no big deal. If I recall it was her 13th , which is kind of a milestone for any child. They should have given her something more special.

-Joy's previous birthday where they just walked into a cake shop and picked one up last minute saying "flavour didn't matter" as long as there was enough. I mean, I get there's like a gajillion of them but couldn't they have thought ahead and maybe ordered with flavours in mind or bought Joy a small cake for herself in a flavour of her choosing? It's not that hard to call a cake place ahead of time.

-Jed (or maybe Jer)'s birthday celebration which consisted of buying a chess set which Jinger. And nothing else.

-Who was it of Jim Bob took shopping in the hospital gift shop? Was that Jed as well? Whoever it was, it was sad to watch. Yes she had a gravely ill baby, but she could have left for an hour or two to give the other child some deserved attention.

That chess set for Jer? Bought in July. The problem is that his birthday is in late December (if memory serves...I want to say the 30th). I can understand maybe getting kids born around Christmas gifts at other times of the year, but the Duggars have a shitload of kids born in December/January, including both sets of twins and we've never seen them out shopping for a gift for Jinger, Jordyn, or even Jer's TWIN at off times of the year. Heck, Jinger was the one selected to BUY the gift with Jer (maybe he was on her buddy team? I only know Jill's team, Josie with Jana and that Jordyn is neglected by Jessa...that's about it).

My impression is that Jinger will drive anywhere. It seems that she loves getting out of the TTH.

I looked up the birthdays since my last post and it's officially T-minus 26 days until she can officially take the car and drive it wherever the fuck she wants.

...then I woke up. :(

PS: I was also correct about Jed/Jer's birthday. Not sure what's going on around mid/late-March, but evidenced by the kids born in December and early January, it's significant enough for the Boob and Mullet to celebrate it with tons of nookie.

I kind of like the blood song and I think the Duggars have nice voices which are generally overshadowed by the number of small children they've got singing with them. What drives me nuts about it is the way they sing, "It's through the-" huge gaping pause for breath "-bloooooooood of Jesus." That so would not fly in any legitimate musical group.

For me, the low points are things like half an episode devoted to installing blinds or Michelle doing a three minute talking head about how they have a lot of drivers so they took a lot of cars to (wherever) so that's why they took so many cars, because they have a lot of drivers...and other things that make me say, "didn't they have anything more interesting they could have put in instead."

Oh yes, the poor sword swallower. Honestly, all American tourists that I heard talking (and therefore knew were American tourist) had those moments though. Well, not THAT bad. But they're also very easy to spot. Sneakers, shorts, shirt that says "cancun" or " tijuana" or "oktoberfest" and camera bag. I am NOT kidding.

I don't really have an issue with the flipflops though. I think know one having lived in Florida does. :)

I had chicken pox when I was 13, btw, and it was NOT fun. I would wish for everyone to have them earlier. We didn't even have chicken pox vaccination back then. No idea about now.

Deleted because it was a bit O/T, on reflection.

Yes, those! So annoying! In the first episode where the Bateses come to visit there's Jana and Michelle planning the meals and she says "We're planning all the meals for the next 2 weeks while the Bates are here so... we're hoping to get all the meals organized and have everything planned out." Heard it the first time Jana!

I was thinking about this thread when I went to bed last night.. er this morning and another worst was with Amy throwing bread at the animals in the zoo safari.

Basicly any time Amy is on is a worst moment.

I agree, she is so dumb and annoying as all Hell. Don't they have another non-fundie relative they can drag out for look-we-like-her-heathen-ass-anyway camera time?

I.

OT We need a thread on how to dress if you are visiting Europe because I would probably be that type of person :D

Joseph's birthday with the clothes peg game and JB saying "16 and never been kissed" was a pretty bad birthday too. Come to think of it, have the Duggar's ever had a nice birthday for one of their kids?

There's always Michelle's sister (Evelyn?) who is a lesbian!

Umm, I hate to break it to you, but I grew up in Orlando (tourist trap capitol of the US) and ALL tourists from all countries wear that stuff. What else are you supposed to wear when you're doing a lot of walking/sightseeing? :?

Although, I personally think that the shirts are tacky, but shorts/sneakers/cameras are pretty standard.

Shirts, no, but otherwise, yes to the comfortable clothing, especially in Orlando.

marmalade, one word: easter.

or a few words: excitement about impending easter.

nothing like your risen lord to get ya all hot and heavy...

DimBob buying undies for the "world tour" *shudder*

Blehhh. Agree. Plus filming, um, Jason's accident? WTF moment. And Anna giving birth on the toilet while Josh freaking NAPPED.

I don't believe in showing up as a tourist in other countries looking like you're going to do their yard work. Casual slacks and skirts, blouses and tops, even nice tee shirts and neat jeans. And I'm backpacking, by law I'm supposed to look grungy and awful, but there's really no cause for it. Especially because when I'm walking I see NO ONE else wearing any sort of athletic clothing because they're doing a lot of walking- even on weekends everyone is in nice clothing. I've seen maybe two pairs of sneakers on people over the age of 12, and they were like fashion sneakers.

It DOES give new meaning to "He has risen."

I started watching this train wreck about the time they moved back from Little Rock. The first low point I noticed was baby Jordyn climbing up and crawling down the TTH staircase unattended. I was shocked at how dangerous that looked.

I make it a point to blend in when I travel, but I will not give up my trainers. Le sigh. When someone is my age and undertall (ahem!), the more cushion on the soles of the feet and the more support on the sides -- the better.

Just MHO. I've been pretty good at appearing to be one of the locals ... until I have to speak, of course. :P Even then, various accents of English come pretty easy to me - so if I hide the Frommer's, I'm apt to "pass."

Back on-topic: Worst Duggar moment was back in the 13 or 14 kids era, as they're loading into a van, and you can tell the youngest boys have no idea who Michelle is.

Second-worst, same episode, one of the boy buddies is having trouble making his child buddy cooperate, so Michelle lumbers up, grabs the little one by his upper arm - wraps her hand around the kid's arm - and talks to him right in the face. Child looks terrified and complies.

Those are my 'the worst' only because that's one of the few episodes I could make myself watch.

Then why are the kids doing the Razorback Cheer and they have Razorback stickers and clothes? Another hypocrisy on their part?

Because everyone in Arkansas is a Hog fan by default. We don't have professional teams of any kind (except minor league baseball). Razorback clothing and gear is everywhere, and easy to get, even at thrift stores. It would be odd if they DIDN'T have Hog shirts and stuff and know how to call the Hogs.

Must be a cultural, or simply a climate thing. If people are walking around in grungy shorts and t-shirts, that is a little surprising to me. I would never wear slacks/skirt and a blouse if I planned a lot of walking, but probably a nice, comfy knit top and jeans with comfortable shoes. Sneakers are very, very common here and aren't looked down upon, unless you're going to a nicer restaurant. But typically, tourists here wear comfortable (but good quality) clothes, especially shorts/t-shirts/tank tops and sandals or sneakers. It's also ungodly hot most of the year.

ETA: that gear is pretty much expected. We just make fun of the ones who wear socks with sandals.

Well, I don't wear that stuff when I travel. But I don't walk around here like that either. I try to dress more...business casual. With ballerina flats (is that correct) instead of sneakers, and maybe shorts, but then with a blouse. Camera can go in my handbag. Stuff like that. I don't think I am obliged to wear shorts & jogging shoes when sightseeing. Me, I would even wear high heels, but that's just me... :D

The one thing that always makes you spot Americans is the shoes, really.

What I have found, a very general observation (yes, this is my impression, there is no empirical data on this, call it a prejudice if you want):

Americans tend to either dress down (day time) or dress up ALL the way (night). Europeans tend to be more in the middle, they sport more of a business casual style for both day and night.

I can only say that I have NEVER seen anyone wearing pyjamas to school here, ever, or even sweatpants.

You made a good point about backpacking. When I go backpacking, I am not obliged to look unwashed. But some people seem to think that..
