God told Cain and Perry to run for President

When people think God talks to them, aren't they usually diagnosed as schizophrenic or placed in a mental institution? Why is it considered an added credential for a presidential candidate? Why isn't anyone questioning their sanity? (Also, God seems to be hedging his bets if he told both Cain AND Perry to run. Or maybe God is hoping to split the vote and make sure there is a Democrat in the White House again.)

ATLANTA (AP) — Republican Herman Cain said God convinced him to enter the race for president, comparing himself to Moses: "'You've got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?'"

The Georgia business executive played up his faith Saturday after battling sexual harassment allegations for two weeks, trying to shift the conversation to religion, an issue vital to conservative Republicans, especially in the South.

In a speech Saturday to a national meeting of young Republicans, Cain said the Lord persuaded him after much prayer.

"That's when I prayed and prayed and prayed. I'm a man of faith — I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I've ever done before in my life," Cain said. "And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses. 'You've got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?'"

Once he made the decision, Cain said, he did not look back.

Four women have now accused Cain of sexually harassing them when he led the National Restaurant Association more than a decade ago. Cain, who has denied wrongdoing, was silent about the allegations and did not take reporters' questions.

Cain isn't the first to say God prodded him toward a campaign. Texas Gov. Rick Perry's wife, Anita, has said she felt God was speaking to her about the race, adding that her husband needed to see a "burning bush," a Biblical reference to God's first appearance to Moses.

During his speech, Cain also criticized President Barack Obama for canceling the space shuttle program — a decision actually made by President George W. Bush — as NASA shifts its focus on travel farther from Earth's orbit.

"I can tell you that as president of the United States, we are not going to bum a ride to outer space with Russia," Cain said to loud applause. "We're going to regain our rightful place in terms of technology, space technology."

Cain was talking about U.S. plans, now that the space shuttle is retired, to use Russian rockets to send astronauts to the International Space Station. In the meantime, NASA is focused on explorations deeper in space.

It was Bush who decided in 2004 to retire the space shuttle program. The Republican president still supported sending astronauts to the moon and Mars.

Obama, once in office, dropped the goal of a moon mission. Instead, NASA has plans to build a giant rocket capable of sending astronauts to an asteroid and eventually Mars. It wants to outsource to private companies the task of ferrying astronauts and cargo to the space station — a job previously performed by the space shuttle.

Until private companies are ready, NASA will keep buying seats on Russian Soyuz capsules to get astronauts to the space station. The cost per person to fly on a Soyuz is expected to rise from $56 million to $63 million, which is still cheaper than flying on the shuttle.

Cain spoke in advance of a Republican debate Saturday in South Carolina focused on foreign policy.

A lot of Christians I know often say they feel that God is leading them to do something (and it's NOT always what they want to do or what is easiest). I think it's sort of silly to say, "God told me to do X," if that's how they actually put it, but I understand where that comes from. In my own experience, I've had situations where I just know a certain decision is right, even though it seems to go against logic at the time. I believe that's God leading me in the direction I'm supposed to be going. So while I think "God told me to run for president" is a bit ridiculous, I see where they're coming from.

For what it's worth, very rarely do people think God talks to them audibly, and I hope that hearing voices alone wouldn't get someone put in a mental institution, though they would clearly need some treatment.

It's pretty funny that they both claim this, though. I wonder which one of them God really wants.

No, I don't think that hearing voices would land someone in a mental institution, but it certainly raises questions about their sanity. I find the choice of words in the article strange. God "persuaded" Cain to run for President? That implies there was some sort of dialogue there.

Either way, whether he hears voices (which I doubt) or whether he felt something when he was praying, I find it disturbing. It's not something I look for in a presidential candidate.

(And, as a sidenote, hearing voices is not as rare as one might think. I know one person who hears voices that he claims are God and the Holy Spirit talking to him and he definitely belongs in a mental institution.)

I've got an Uncle that hears from God regularly, he's in the criminally insane section of a state prison in Michigan :D

This kinda reminds me of thatgirl, who basicaly said she didn't want to get married that way or have kids, but god expects her to, so she did.

Ditto on the George Bush comments.

I know auditory hallucinations are pretty common, and they don't usually involve voices. I had myself convinced I was hallucinating once, but it turned out that the girl next door just liked to sing and my roommate just couldn't hear it.

It's (rightly) pretty difficult to get someone put in a mental institution involuntarily and would definitely have to involve more than just hallucinations, unless the hallucinations would cause the person to be a danger to himself or others.

Cain almost certainly means a feeling during prayer, and I think it's pretty common in our culture to (convince yourself that you) have that feeling, whether you're Christian or not. Some people say it's God, some say it's their conscience, some just say it's a feeling, some say it's other supernatural beings (I've seen a bit of this on this forum with people who think they're communicating with ghosts), whatever. I do find it concerning, because you can convince yourself that it's God (or whatever else) telling you what to do instead of just your own feelings. I also think it's unfortunately pretty normal.

It does really irritate me to see such hateful and sleazy (looking at Cain here) people say that God wants them to run.

As for actually hearing voices or even seeing things, I often wonder how many of the saints and other religious figures in history just really needed serious mental help.

So, maybe Cain and/or Perry employed the JimBob Duggar method of discerning God's will? Pray about it in a yes/no manner. Then flip a coin heads yes/tails no best 2 out of 3 sufficient...and with 3 out of 3 being a total green light from God.

When I read about the coin toss method of discerning God's will in the first Duggar book, I thought Boob was certifiable and Mullet a fool for going along with it. And I pity the 19 plus souls they've placed in the middle of their delusional mess.

Ha, I forgot about that. That's both hilarious and disturbing.

It always seems funny to me that what God "tells" these people to do happens to be just what they were going to do anyway

I think God told me to go buy a new Coach bag tomorrow. Yes, I'm sure he did. . .

God told me to stop studying so much. Specifically, He said, "Life is not all biochemistry." To which I replied, "Actually, life *is* all biochemistry. You of all entities should know that." And He was all, "Touche."

God told me that Cain and Perry are both full of shit and that he wouldn't ask them to run for dog catcher.

Teddybear, were you there when God said that, too? I heard it clearly!

Wish I'd known you were nearby -- we could have had lunch!

This is the stuff that worries me about many in the Republican party today.

I don't remember the exact numbers but weren't the last stats on this subject that the majority of Republicans actually believe the current President is not a Christian and is not truly an American citizen? Wasn't is something like close to a half of the people polled, some seriously crazy number! Yet, there's tons of evidence that proves both of these claims by Obama. No, not that I think it matters if he's Christian or not, but for the love of God, the man and his family have been practicing the faith for most/all of their lives. The birth certificate, ummm there's the official copy, but still, nope nope, he's not really a citizen!

Yet, Cain now says God has spoken to him and I bet that many of these same Republicans will nod their heads and simply accept that as the Gospel truth. You know years ago, one of my brothers was a registered Republican [my Mom says it must have been due to faulty potty training] and when the Nat'l Convention was held in New Orleans, he and his wife had some minor duties, but they met many of the big names. His most memorable one was Pat Robertson walking up to him and "anointing him". Yeah...on the floor of the convention. Told my brother that the Lord was speaking to him and guided him to my brother to tell him that great things were in store for him as long as he stayed with the Party. Of course my brother's response was to try to get away as quickly as possible, he said Pat kept following him babbling about some light shining upon him. I still haven't figured out if these people really believe the stuff they say or if because they've said it so much, it's just become second nature to them whether they believe a light is shining on someone or not. Either way, that shit amazes me! Lord help me, I've said shit twice...no three times today.

Oh yes, it was an awesome moment. That must have been why I didn't notice you there, I was too amazed.

Humm god picked two candidates to run against each other? what god can't decide what one is best so he is hedging his bets? God also told that flake Christine to run and look how far god got promoting her. god seems to be a poor campaign manager. I think it is pretty low to claim god wants you to run How do you argue with that?

All I can really say is if god want those two human suppositories to run then god you suck.

Maybe God told them both to run so they could be the sacrificial lambs while the sane, fiscally-conservative, small-government Republicans I keep hearing of sit in the wings and wait for 2016?

It reminds me of a thread on feministMormonhousewives I read, where it was a commonly-known thing that whenever a cute younger woman joined a ward a bunch of men would have "Testimonies" she should marry them.

I think that's it. god does not like republicans. I have my doubts god likes any politician. I very much doubt he likes the flakes running now. What happens if we find out Cain has done the things the woman accused him of? does that mean god wants an adulterer as president?

God can be a bit of a prankster sometimes. Maybe he spoke to Cain and told him to run because that way his professional and private life would come under close scrutiny and the harrassment charges would surface at last so Cain would be exposed for the slime he is. Likewise with Perry being exposed as the total dufus he is.

As they like to say: God works in mysterious ways!
