I don't doubt that J'chelle is a shrew when the cameras aren't rolling. Whether that influences Jim-Boob is hard to say, but he does seem like the sort who could only take so much nagging before he says, "What the hell ever, Michelle. Do what you want, and shut up about it."

After watching some of the earlier episodes, particularly the New York trip for Mother's Day, I was surprised at how in charge she seemed to be for a fundamentalist family. He appeared to make a lot of the decisions but IIRC his directions followed her "suggestions". It could just be that she was tired of Josh and Jim-Bob vying for control while she fought back morning sickness but there were several times that Jim-Bob was trying to get everyone from point A to point B and she was stopping to hand out pictures and sign autographs. I can picture her taking control to keep their image up all while faking submission. Most of the fundy wives I know pull the strings behind the scenes.
