The Duggars and the military

I know this might be a redundant question but do think any of the Duggar children would ever join the military? I've been wondering that for a few years now.

No, never. They'd have to interact with "commoners" plus take orders from someone other than Daddy.

Yup that. I also think Boob and Mullet probably discourage them by telling about deployments, being stationed in different places and how some military members drink.

Well in Afghanistan the Americans and Canadians don't allow alcohol were they're stationed. But I get what your saying.

OT is there anyway to get rid of the signature under my username?

ering, the signature will change after you make 10 posts.

I don't think any of the kids will join the military while they are under JimBob's supreme authority, but I can see one or two of them doing it either after escaping or after getting married and realizing that the local used car lot and towing business market is saturated.

I was thinking maybe out of all of them maybe John David would join. Didn't he say he wanted to be a pilot? Granted you need to meet certain requirements to be a pilot in the Air Force.

Josh wouldn't last though. He might have to answer to a female officer and I guess the Duggars wouldn't like that

I think it would be strongly discouraged, but I could see one of the boys trying it out as a way to proselytize. Their cult isn't just about having babies and isolating them; there's also a very strong emphasis on evangelizing (or attempting to do it, because the methods they choose aren't very effective). This topic did come up on the mega-long thread about Michelle's latest publicity stunt, and someone brought up the good point that there are education requirements for the military. I don't think it's very strict, but you have to at least have some basic skills. I think the older boys are at least literate, but I also think some of the younger boys can barely even read. They fell the cracks even within their own family.

Oh also, I don't think any of the boys would be willing to risk their lives for their causes. Dying for the cause is something that women do in their world, and the men just act tough while hiding behind excuses.

In any job within any branch of the military, there is quite a chance that a Duggar boy would be under the command of a (gasp) woman, and now be forced to serve with the ebil gayz, among a myriad of other sins they would be exposed to.

While they are more than comfortable "saluting" the troops and singing their praises from the comfort of their living room, I don't see any Duggar boys joining the military. Ever.

ATI discourages their members joining the military because you could be under the command of someone that is not a true Christian. Also they would have a hard time joining because they do not have a HS Diploma, which is required by a couple branches. The big reason is that they would have to be on time, everytime no questions asked. No Duggartime in the military.

Certain requirements like a college degree. All pilots are officers, and all officers have college degrees. I was in the Navy, attached to a fighter squadron, and all the pilots were officers. It could be different for the Air Force, but I'm pretty sure it's the same for all branches.

And Smuggar wouldn't last even if he only had to report to men. I suspect the word "shitbird" would be thrown around a lot when Private Smuggar was around.

Oh no. I grew up practically right next door to Oceana. I know what the Navy guys get up to. I've heard so many stories from my dad (Vietnam vet!), my brother-in-law, family friends, neighbors, friends' parents, my boyfriend's cousins...

No Duggar would last two minutes around any Navy man (or woman) without their heads exploding.

Then, you have the little problem of having to deal with non-Christians, women, gays, and various other non-fundies.

Josh wouldn't last in the Navy, or any branch of the military for that matter. JD I could see going in, but there are education requirements that he'd have to fill. And that's even assuming Jim Bob lets either one out from under his "umbrella" of authority.

The closest I see any of them getting to the military would be a chaplain.... and it would be one of the J'slaves who was married said chaplain.

My brother is an officer in the Air Force. He was on track to be a pilot but he was told he was too short. A few months later he was told that he was also color blind. I'm pretty sure its the same as well (I have no idea why I blanked on that fact).

One of my brothers friends enlisted in the Navy. He was told that he was "officer material" so he was told to go to a school that had Navy ROTC to get his degree. One of the Duggar kids could do that. But knowing them I doubt they would do something like that since it involves going to college and I don't think they would last at any of the academies (or even get in).

Well, there's gays, women, people with a different religion. All sorts of no-no's, plus the sisters aren't allowed to go with them to protect them from all the Nike. At least the odds of running into someone with green hair is low.

The military has a way of turning boys into men. Can anybody picture JB accepting a son that makes it though training and is more a man than his prancing, patriarchal doofus ass?

I don't think a damned one of the whole lot of Duggars have the discipline necessary for the military. If the can't keep family running on time, there's now ay in hell they'd have the discipline to report on time. That's even IF one was accepted. The lack of full high school education would disqualify all of them, I think. You need a diploma. Not a GED or anything else. A diploma.

Uh, no. This is not correct. Only the Air Force almost always requires a high school diploma. The other branches gladly accept GEDs with a qualifying ASVAB score. I don't know what goes on in the Duggar family homeschool or Arkansas state law, but I homeschool my son in South Carolina. A home school association in my state can grant a high school diploma. Home school students are not required to take the GED. Homeschool students have also been accepted to most all colleges, including the Ivy League ones.

No. They do not gladly accept them. A person applying to the armed forces without a traditional high school diploma is considered Tier II candidate. The rules for this are:

In the Air Force, the limit for Tier II is less than one percent each year. In such cases, the applicant must score a minimum of 50 on the AFQT to qualify (Note: The "AFQT" is the overall ASVAB score).

The Army will allow up to 10 percent each year to be Tier II candidates, but they must score a minimum of 50 on the AFQT.

The Marines will only allow about 5 percent each year to be Tier II, and the Navy about 10 percent. Like the Army, Tier II recruits must score a minimum of 50 on the AFQT to qualify.

The Coast Guard only accepts Tier 2 candidates if they have prior military service, and even then requires them to score higher on the AFQT (50 for prior Coast Guard Service, 65 for prior service in other branches).

So it is not impossible, just unlikely and very hard. I believe Tier 2 candidates also get less choice of careers and such.

Perhaps glady was a poor word choice. Thanks for the additional information. My point remains the same. The military will accept enlistees with a GED. Also, homeschool education does not equal GED as many homeschool graduates earn a high school diploma, score well on the SAT, and do well in college. I'm speaking of homeschool education in general, not the Duggar's brand of homeschooling.

Gothard does not endorse military service. They would potentially come under the authority of an unGodly man, or GASP! Woman.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the boys go in as a means of escape. Although with only a GED it's difficult. Perhaps with some college credits they'd look better. Homeschoolers can face challenges with the military.

Personally I hope JoyAnna enlists!

Good info, Emmiedahl. I joined the Navy without even a GED in 1993. The recruiter told me I had to take the ASVAB and score at least a 50 before he'd even look at me. I scored a 70, and they let me in as an Undesignated E-1 (about as low on the totem pole as you can get!). No guaranteed A-School, and I had a year from my enlistment date to get my GED or they had the option to discharge me. With only a year of service, I wouldn't have qualified for GI Bill benefits so 6 months after I enlisted, I had my GED. I was super lucky to be able to enlist under those circumstances.

That's a great idea, Hopewell. As rough and tumble as she is, I think she would probably get alot out of the military. One of my girlfriends spent 7 years in the Navy reserves and managed to get a husband and 4 kids while enlisted. She really got alot out of it.
