Has anyone met the Duggars?

I met Mrs. D and a few of her children while I lived in NW Arkansas about eight years ago. She visited the public school where I taught. Seemed like a very nice person, but at the time, I was unaware of the fundiness.

....as was Mrs. D who had long, rather styleless hair, and she wore a perpetual smile on her face. I remember being rather curious about that.

What were they like?

Standoffish because I was wearing an Obama shirt, and answered the door in shorts because I was cleaning the bathroom.

I bet you did that on purpose. :naughty:

Yes, in Conway

Yes, in Conway

I was living in Rogers at the time, and as I recall, Springdale was their home town. Still is, maybe?

I'm dying to know! Why were they visiting a public school? :?:

My guess: To act like they were interested in how other people educate their children while being as condescending as possible.

Were they condescending? (Doesn't suprise me.) What did they do? This would have been before their show.

I believe the Duggars have visited a few public schools. TLC filmed one visit. I remember at the visit at the school, they talked homeschooling, the buddy system and how it is to have a big family.

There was a poster (freejinger1981 maybe?) who got herself invited to visit the family over July 4th a few years ao, and spent a few days with them, IIRC. I had a few email exchanges with JB waaaayyyyyy back in the day but have not met them in person. Since I live in NY that isn't surprising.

They've done it at least twice on the show, but I'm surprised that they were visiting public schools eight years ago.

I went to a Q&A session before one of their appearances. THey were nice, but unremarkable.

I felt the girls were stuck-up. Jana was shy and kind of hung back. She stayed with the kids. THe Howler Monkeys weren't as bad as they seem on tv. James was sweet to my kids. I fell for Hannie.....she was sweet and played very nicely with my daughter.

They were visiting with the director of the after school care program in that building. In retrospect, that seems rather odd......wonder if her kids were attending public school at the time. I didn't have a clue who she was, but someone mentioned that she had a tub-load of kids, and I think it wasn't long after that the family began to get national attention.

She was very friendly, pleasant and smiley, and the kids were well-behaved.

Maybe she was trying to get them to use Gothard materials in their after school program? Wouldn't surprise me at all.

I'd forgotten about that. Didn't she steal from them? I'm remembering why they might be short and attitude-y about groups like this, in light of that.

Interesting! It is odd, especially considering how much more isolated they were eight years ago. Thanks for the info. :)

She was most likely trying to get Gothard's Character First program into their afterschool program. Trust me, no way those kids were attending public school. It's EVIL!!! LOL

Wouldn't surprise me, either. Gothard has a program called Character First!*, which is basically his character "training" stuff with the Jesus-y stuff taken out. IIRC, it was used in AR at some point. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they were visiting the school for that purpose. Even though it's (supposedly) secular, the program is often taught by Gothardites. For example, Esther Staddon seemed to have taught it at some point.

*What's with fundies and exclamation points?

I wish I'd been more fundi informed and aware at the time. It could have been a good opportunity to discuss patriarchy......fundi tendencies to cherry-pick scripture.....oh, I don't know--maybe other things.
