The ring Jana's wearing . . .

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought I was seeing things, really, but I just watched the most recent episode of the show - several times over - and long about minute 26, when they're putting soil into the pots, and they're standing by a table, Jana is standing there holding a pot in her right hand and her left is to the camera. Doesn't that ring look like a diamond?

My apologies if I'm causing an undue firestorm . . .

The Duggar maidels wear plain gold bands (obviously bought used and saved the difference!). I also thought I saw a little sparkle on Jana's pure white hand. We can only hope...run, Jana! Run as fast as you can!

The public promotion of the purity rings after menarche is so revolting. The Duggars claim that their lifestyle is their childrens' choice, and between them and God, or between them, God, and a million viewers when they see Joy wearing a ring.

Do the boys get rings? If so, when? First wet dream? ;-)

Sorry. My bad.

I knew about purity rings, but I thought they were plainer and flatter, like the ones in the link that tabitha2 included . I didn't realize that some looked quite like engagement rings, but I guess that kinda goes right along with the unsavory leanings in all of this . . .

Per the last books, the girls can choose the style of their ring, and whether they want a stone. As I said on the other thread, Jana used to have a plain gold band, but I've noticed the ring with a stone for quite a while. Maybe a 21st birthday upgrade. Last I saw, Jill still has the plain gold band. Half the time I dont' see Jessa's ring.

Jinger's ring appears to be chunky silver worn on her MIDDLE finger (as of their return from the big vacaycay) and Joy has started with the standard plain gold band.

Purity rings are one the most messed up christian symbols.

They just make for a lot of guilt, shame, and wrong feelings.

Commit your purity to your FATHER and God??? Nooooo. That is wrong on so many levels.

I had a purity ring when I was a teenager. Mine was a single pearl surrounded by little diamonds. Mine had nothing to do with promising anything to my father. Just like a wedding band is a symbol of keeping the covenant of marriage to God and your spouse, a purity ring is just a symbol that you are promising God you will stay pure and wait for your spouse. Mormons do a similar thing, but their rings have CTR engraved for Choose The Right.

well, actually in this one documentary the uber-creepy dad proudly stated the girls are declaring their purity to their fathers.

the bad part about purity rings is that it's not really the girls' wish but the parents' or the dad's.

That and do teenage girls really need a visible symbol to announce the status of their hymen?

Same here. I actually asked for one instead of being given one when I became a "woman." Sidenote: As if getting your period isn't awkward enough, wearing a ring so your brothers know you got it is SUPER fun, I'm sure.

Anyhoo, my parents thought I was a little wackadoo (they think the same thing about my obsession with polygamists and the syfy channel) but went along with it because 1) who doesn't want their teen daughter to think twice before deciding to have sex and 2) they were always supportive of my spreading my wings and trying to find what made me happy.

I've never heard of the girl promising anything to her father, but it sounds icky to me. And I'm using "icky" because I can't find a suitable word...

So some in the purity movement, like the ones who go to purity balls, do pledge virginity to the father. Others who wear purity rings don't.

My parents made it clear that sexual and emotional purity was important (albeit unspoken) but we never had purity rings.

Did they do that for Josh & Anna?

I don't recall them doing that but their engagement/marriage was right around the time when not many people were aware of the Duggars. You know, before the fame hunger kicked in.
