A rant on a facebook status...

One of my firends on facebook (I am not really friends with him though) just put this as his status:

Dear everyone,

killing unborn babies is wrong and should be punishable.

Love, a sane person.

And it just really pisses me off. First of all, I am a really firm believer in keeping all political and controversial things off facebook (at least for myself) because I think it just creates unnecessary conflicts. Also, it is not so much the view that makes me mad, he is more than welcome to be against abortion, it's that he KNOWS its wrong and if that's the way he feels than its quite obviously right, isn't he so smart and special. THEN it should be punishable. Yes, let's just punish all the women who hold different views than you. (It seems to me to be very misogynist, but I don't know if I am reading too much into this.) Finally, "Love, a sane person" is incredibly condescending and rude, get over yourself, your beliefs are not sane just because you hold them and can type them out on facebook.

The kicker? He lists his religious views as atheist and his political views as apolitical. Yeah.

I love how that is the sane view. If his view is so "sane" and is common sense, then what does he propose we do with all the unwanted children that are born? How does he suppose we support all the mothers who cannot support their children financially or emotionally? I assume he thinks that back alley abortions that kill women are justified since they are doing the wrong thing to begin with, right?

And what about abortion when the mother's life is at risk?

It is amazing how such a "sane" view has so many logic fails.

One of the things that bothers me most about the whole abortion debate is that people (on both sides) reduce it to ridiculous simplicities "pro life!" "pro choice!" and act like it's the obvious, sane choice. In reality it's not a black and white issue and there are sane and logical arguments on both sides of the fence. All that to say, yeah, his status would bug me too. I'd probably even say something, but I'm a pot-stirrer like that ;-)

Ugh, political/religious tirades on Facebook are really tacky, especially if they're especially ignorant. Posting an article you agree with? ... Okay, I guess, but don't get pissed off when people comment on it.

I would be SO tempted to respond with "Sane is a legal standard. And a very low one at that. Remember, Charles Manson is also a sane person."

Lol, that's really good. I would, except a good friend of mine liked the status and I don't really want to get into it. But I will remember that one.

One of my firends on facebook (I am not really friends with him though) just put this as his status:

Let's see...

Define 'killing' (does he mean murder or the termination of life? Then define 'life')

Define 'unborn babies' (when does an embryo become a fetus become a 'baby'?)

Define 'punishable' (what does he propose? A fine? Imprisonment?)

Define 'sane person' (what moral definition is given to 'sanity' and/or to an anti-abortion stance?)

Once we've done that, maybe there is ground for philosophical debate.

But then again, it's FB

I can't deal with FB any more, haven't been back to my account in ages. I know I'm losing contact with various friends out of town because of it, but I still can't force myself to go back! :(

I have several friends and relatives on Facebook who often post Bible verses, and Christian related things, but strangely none of them ever post anything anti-abortion. But one of my relatives, once told me that he was against abortion, but if he felt no need to judge woman who have them or the laws regarding abortion.

I knew an atheist who was against abortion. She said she thought it was gross and wrong, but she said she would never hang out a pro-life events/rallies.

Yeah, I just wish people would keep all that stuff of facebook. Having said that, someone commented on his status disagreeing with it so: YAY! At least someone has the guts to say something, even if I don't.

I have a friend who frequently likes to post anti-abortion propaganda. I'm able to ignore them for the most part but I had to comment on the story (and I do mean story although some idiots actually took it as fact) about the woman who went to the doctor to have an abortion and was told that among other reasons to not choose abortion, childbirth would be the safer option.

Facebook is public and is your "personal brand", so ideally: nothing too political, too religious, or too personal concerning your lifestyle (I learned the hard way when mentioning that I have a cleaning lady).

Guess what? Turns out I'm not friends with assholes! Some new info has come to light from the original poster:

I was just in class and they were talking about how killing a pregnant woman is only considered one count of murder and assaulting a pregnant woman causing the death of the fetus is only considered assault. So when I wrote that status I was frustrated, I as most people have my own views on abortion but I do not try to impose my beliefs on others and I normally try to stay away from public statuses such as this. So I wasn't talking about abortion but I apologize for not specifying my claim.

Good. I can go to bed happy now :) Thanks for all the input though, that status just really upset me.

I must have really un-religious friends, because none of my facebook friends usually post religious stuff, except for my uncle, and his are usually just "God is good! Praise the Lord!" type stuff.

I do have one friend who Tweeted "Christ is risen!" at 6 am on Easter morning. I have my Twitter account set to not send me text messages before 7, so when the phone went off, I got up to read the message because I assumed it must be a real person who must have something really important to say if they were texting so early, but it was just Twitter, which seems to selectively ignore what I tell it to do. I was highly tempted to Tweet back, "Yes, and now so are all your Twitter followers."

Okay, end of OT story. Carry on.
