I decided to start one main technology outages thread this morning.

To start, it looks like Verizon is down for a good portion of the country this morning.

A Verizon outage Monday morning has left tens of thousands of customers unable to make calls, text or access mobile data. 

More than 100,000 customers reported issues with their cell service, according to the outage tracking website DownDetector. The outage left many iPhone users in SOS mode, meaning it can only make emergency calls. 

"We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers," Verizon confirmed in a statement Monday. "Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue."

The company did not give further details about the extent of the outage or when it may be resolved, but their official support account has been responding to a flood of posts on X about the issue. 

I personally have been getting around this at home by using my Google Voice app instead.  I've had one of their numbers for over a decade now.  I got it when I was a computer operations supervisor and wanted to call in using my laptop instead of my phone to retrieve my voice mail as I did work remotely every once in a while.  So having the Google voice number is useful even if when I call places they ask if they should update my phone number.  (Answer to that is nope).
