Dame Maggie Smith passed away this morning

Quote

Dame Maggie Smith, one of Britain’s best-known actresses whose long career ranged from starring opposite Laurence Olivier in “Othello” on stage and screen, to roles in “Harry Potter” and “Downton Abbey,” has died, her sons announced in a statement shared by their publicist Clair Dobbs.

She was 89.

“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end,” the statement reads. “She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.”

I mainly remember her from Sister Act as she played Mother Superior in that film.

As a Maggie Smith superfan, I'm so sad. I loved her so much in Downton Abbey, Gosford Park, Harry Potter, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and the list goes on. Rest in peace, Maggie.

She *made* Downton Abbey for me.
Very sad.

A year to the day after Sir Michael Gambon. I saw her in so many things! I never watched Downton Abbey but was a big Harry Potter fan. She was a perfect McGonagall.

I first saw Dame Maggie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Not when it first came out, of course, my mother wouldn't have let me see it when I was 11 in 1969! But a few years later, when it started airing on television. And then, some years later, A Room With A View, with Helena Bonham Carter, which is still one of my all time favourite films. And she was so flawless in the Potter films and Downton Abbey.

We've got TCM back in our lineup again, so I'm hoping they do a retrospective of her work soon. I'm sure they will. She really was the 'crème de la crème,' as Miss Jean Brodie would say,  of the acting profession. ❤️
