So far I'm watching the Iowa State at Iowa game this evening and hoping Iowa comes out on top.

I got the notice in the mail today that my undergrad's homecoming game will be on October 5th,.  I hope they crush their opposing teams like they did other years.  Win or lose I plan to go see the game just to be there.

This almost makes up for yesterday.

Especially since Notre Dame was widely expected to totally outclass NIU by at least four touchdowns.

I'm not a Nebraska fan anymore, but still live surrounded by them. They lost to Illinois in OT last night after beating three bad teams. The first three games had the fans convinced they were championship calibre again. They're selling shirts that say things like "Party Like It's 1995". And I expected the Illinois would beat them.

Amidst all the speculations about why they have been terrible since 2014, I realized the main reason:

They haven't hired a coach for his coaching ability since 2007. Then they fired that coach in spite of a winning record. In 2014 they hired Mike Riley for his personality. In 2017, they hired Scott Frost for his ties to Nebraska (Frost was a promising coach at the time, granted, but in hindsight, taking a chance on someone who had never been a head coach at a Power 5 school to turn around a program was a risk). And in 2021, they hired Matt Rhule because he and the AD have the same religious beliefs (AD told The Athletic that in a story that appeared there a year ago).

Maybe, just maybe, if they hired a coach because of his coaching ability and how that fits in the Big Ten rather than all these other things...

Iowa is playing Minnesota this evening up in Minneapolis at Huntington Bank Stadium.  I'm hoping to see Floyd of Rosedale return to Iowa this year.  I saw the stadium from the outside several times but never went to a game there.

The IA/MN game is fairly early this year.  Previous years when Iowa visited Minnesota it was later in the year.  I remember a couple years ago it was in November.  I was talking to someone at the place I worked at and I told her as much as I loved the Hawkeyes I'd rather watch from the comfort from the home or a bar that time of year.

Everything seems kind of early this year.  My undergrad homecoming is October 3 through 5 this year.  Most years it's closer to the middle or end of the month.  So I'll be back in Iowa in a couple weeks for that as well.

I had a few a few four letter words to say about that and I was all ready to explain how my maternal grandpa would have been so much more of a Sir Swears a Fucking Lot about today's game than I was.  A whole fucking lot more.

And, well, at least it was not a fucking shut out today.

I’m currently in Nashville, and the streets were filled with Alabama fans waiting to watch their team do its yearly crushing of Vanderbilt.  And then something unexpected happened…. What a win for the Commodores!

Just about always a nice thing when things like this happen, like the Northern Illinois win and now the Commodores win.  Except, of course, when it's Iowa losing to a team they were widely expected to beat.  Or Minnesota.
