A court of appeals has lifted a preliminary injunction on Iowa's controversial book ban law, allowing it to take effect immediately.

Governor Kim Reynolds signed SF-496 into law in May of 2023. The law forbids books that contain depictions of sex acts from K-12 classrooms and school libraries.

The law had been placed on hold due to legal challenges, with some questioning the vagueness of the law.

On Friday, the United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the injunction. In their conclusion the court said, "Because the district court issued a preliminary injunction on a flawed analysis of the law, we reverse its decision and vacate the preliminary injunction."
