Rooted in Rest: Homeschool YouTube Families

I've been homeschooling for years and I love to see how other families do it. Of course most families who homeschool are religious. Not all fundie level but fundie-light; many kids, raw milk, anti vaccine etc.

I have been watching rooted in rest for years and I used to love her channel but she seems so out of touch now. She doesn't share the details of her life but goes on and on about being such a busy dance/karate family, vacation home in the mountains, international trips her parents pay for and her weekly date nights. Well, yes, those things are "easy" with five kids when you have multiple family members driving your kids around for you. You have free babysitters weekly. Your dad takes your toddler once a week now so you can focus on your other kids. Your husband and father are clearly well off and you don't have to worry about finances.

Her video today opened with "my husband said no more books so I guess I'll do an usborne party to pay for them" like, damn, you really want me to buy your overpriced books now too just so your kids can get new science kits?

I know much of this comes from being a salty military wife who's literally not had a single date with her husband in 8 years but I'm just tired of women acting like they have all their shit together but failing to mention how much of their shit their families or paid labor are doing for them.

If this woman bothers you, don’t ever go to the m is for mama thread. She’s insufferable, overprivileged, and completely out of touch.

It amuses me at times when these women are so oblivious to how many advantages they have and start talking about how they overcame their hardships. Sure Jan, you overcame all odds.

I saw the threads for her and read a few of them last year maybe. I had never seen her on social media. When I went and looked at her Instagram I could immediately see why everyone hates her, she's so full of her self.

This Mamas House is another one I cannot stand anymore.

Rooted in Rest recently did a video on how their family just thrives on being busy and everyone loves it and she still gets a three course meal on the table for 9 every night. Not once in that video did she mention her sister, father and husband all helping out in various forms during the week. I'm also just over the dance mom shtick. I don't understand why anyone would pay such substantial amounts for their kids to be in competitive sports.

I admit I am against that type of thing for my family. Like travel sports or dance competitions where you travel all over the place. I don’t thrive on being busy and neither do my children. I see so many kids who are overly busy and I can’t help but feel bad for them. When are they ever bored? Being bored can be a good thing for kids.

If I had a child who was into it, and who wanted to train at that level then I'd probably consider doing it. Same with acting etc. - but it wouldn't be the whole focus of the family because it couldn't be, and it would have to be balanced with the needs of the family. At the end of the day if you're that passionate about something you will find ways of making it work as a late teen/adult, not doing it as a child isn't an automatic exclusion.

Yeah I see a lot of people paying thousands and thousands of dollars spending every weekend for months traveling for sports. And the kid may end up getting sick of it and quitting. I’ve seen kids get burnt out by 15. My niece is going to college for golf and she didn’t start at 3 like Tiger Woods. She started at like 13 or 14. And mostly played through her public high school. Although she did some extra tournaments in the summer. I agree kids don’t have to start in diapers to do well in a sport. And they don’t have to be on the most expensive travel teams. I personally think that sometimes they get burnt out faster that way.

My kids are the only kids in my extended family that don’t want to play sports. Which is both good and bad. I love watching children's sporting events. But it would also be a lot of work.

I think her oldest is definitely into it but she wants to be a missionary, so in 3 years all of this time and money will have been for what -- mom to feel like she's "omg dance mom with five kids so on top of things." I just feel so bad for her toddler who's almost never doing toddler things - no playgrounds, no library store times, just being shuttled to practice after practice.

Yeah I think with a toddler there would be some limits on how much time there is available for other pursuits. I hope that the toddler is getting some appropriate activity time in there with another parent or caregiver.

Also I am still getting the giggles at the blog name - I have no idea what it is meant to mean, but "rooted" has a completely different meaning in Australian slang, and given she has 5 kids... well under those circumstances I'd be too.

Depends. For things like ballet and gymnastics you do genuinely need to start very early or you have little to no chance to develop the necessary combination of strength and agility. Of course sports that require full dedication from an early age tend to be bad for long-term health for most people so whether or not you should want that is another question.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got to make sure she includes the logo for her $100k car with her new nails this week. At least she has the world's ugliest engagement ring to keep her a little humble.

I'm sorry I would never say something like that to someone IRL, it's just the one thing that stood out to me since everything else in her life has to be extravagant and Instagram perfect 24/7

I quite like the ring but the manicure looks like something you'd wear to the fair with your torn Daisy Dukes and navel-deep cleavage. Which... no complaints from me! It just doesn't necessarily match the car.
