"Quiet on Set" airing on ID and Max

This started on Sunday.  Has anyone watch it yet?  It is about some of the behind the scenes abuses going on at Nickelodeon during the 90s, 00s, and teens.  Although some of it was common knowledge - Dan Schneider was jerk, asshole, masogynist, foot fetish. That the studio didn't perform background checks is astounding.  No one cared that children were being abused - verbally and emotionally on set in front of everyone.  Parents that spoke out were punished by being removed and then their kid was kicked off the show.  The sexualization of the children especially the girls and boys of color was horrific.

The interview of Drake Bell and his father was heartbreaking and terrifying.

I watched it a couple of days ago and I can’t stop thinking about it. The Amanda Show was a little bit before my kids’ time, but Drake and Josh was right in their wheelhouse, so I think we’ve seen every episode. I used to read Gawker back in the day, so I’ve known for a long time what a pig Dan Schneider is. Seeing all the sexual humor that was acted out by children on his shows in this documentary was absolutely sickening. And the way he treated female staff was awful also.

But the sexual abuse that Drake endured by an employee of Nickelodeon was brutal to hear about. Drake has had his own issues as an adult, but now we see where it all comes from. He was being groomed as a tween/young teen, but the sexual abuse didn’t begin until he was 15, and he just didn’t know what to do except stuff it down and pretend life was great.

The letters from Hollywood people supporting Drake’s abuser when he was being sentenced were so horrifying. They all made in sound like a long period of abuse was a 5 minute lapse in judgment. And the victim blaming was huge. One of the letters (you have to fill in some blanks) indicated that since Drake seemed emotionally fine on the set of Drake and Josh, the abuse must not have been too bad.

I would encourage everyone who can handle this subject matter to watch this documentary.

I have seen in Twitter (I refuse to call it a letter) that many more people are feeling empowered to speak out about the abuses they endured.  None were as horrific (so far) as Drake Bell but that does not diminish their stories or experiences. That children were allowed to be used and abused by adults on shows for kids on a kids network is horrible.

I watched this and it was heart breaking to see. I wasn't the right age for these show and my son was too young, but I did tune in a few times and something just "bothered me" about what I saw. I did watch some of the Amanda Show and what a shame, she had such talent.

Just started watching it last night. I’ll start watching the Drake episode tonight.
But so far, wow. Difficult to watch, but needs to be seen by everyone.

Does anyone know if Nickelodeon or Dan Schneider are being held accountable in any way?

Dan Schneider doesn’t work for Nickelodeon anymore.  That was basically his only punishment. Nickelodeon doesn’t seem to be held accountable in any way. Schneider did a YouTube interview where he apologized for a lot of things, but didn’t really hold himself accountable. For instance, all the gross sexual humor, he said that all was seen and approved by his bosses, so if they okayed it, he wasn’t responsible for it.

I haven't watched the latest Dan Schneider video - did he actually apologize or did he just say "it looks like I owe some people some apologies."

I don’t want to watch it again, so I don’t remember exactly. The impression I got was that he was apologizing for behavior in general, more like “I was a jerk,” rather than any specific wrongs committed against specific people.

I have a lot of empathy for Drake Bell, but he doesn’t have anything bad to say about Schneider because he treated him well and was the one who made him successful. I could probably see Drake not “seeing” how bad Schneider’s behavior was while he was going through his own shit. And Schneider knew what had happened to Drake before Drake and Josh even aired. Schneider probably treated him better because of that knowledge.
