AT&T Reporting Massive Cell Phone Outage

AT&T reported a massive cell phone outage affecting about 60,000 people today.

Quote

AT&T acknowledged a widespread network outage across the United States Thursday morning, leaving customers unable to place calls, text or access the internet.

The company said some parts of its network are beginning to recover but it did not have a timeframe for when its system would be fully restored.

The other providers said they didn't have their own outages and it was likely people were trying to call AT&T subscribers.

And because this is America, authorities had to put up warnings like this.

Quote

The Massachusetts State Police warned people not to test their phone service by placing 911 calls.

“Many 911 centers in the state are getting flooded w/ calls from people trying to see if 911 works from their cell phone. Please do not do this,” the state police said in a post on X. “If you can successfully place a non-emergency call to another number via your cell service then your 911 service will also work.”

I have a long story that I won’t tell. But I’ll just say this AT&T outage directly caused me to be cornered by 13 fully grown Canadian geese today.

Thanks AT&T!

I'm sorry, you can't just start a story like that and not finish it! I NEED DETAILS! 😂

I'm pleased to have returned from the '90s hell I have been living in since I woke up. It came back for me about 30 min ago.

Basically they blocked the side door of Kroger I was trying to leave from. All because my phone had no service. They just stood there looking through the glass door at me like, “come on out. We won’t bite.” Ya right. I didn’t trust them anymore than I would trust 13 little trumps outside a door.

As little as I use my iPhone as an actual phone these days I wouldn't have noticed if not for the media talking about it.  I have a Google voice set up with a Minneapolis number as a backup but other than making calls to keep it active I haven't really needed it.  I got a Google Voice number several years ago so I could listen to the morning status voice mail over my laptop instead of dialing in over my phone.  I've kept it ever since but did change it to a Minneapolis number after I moved up here.

Most times unless I actually know who's calling I just it go to voice mail.  If it's someone wanting to hook me up with a potential employer I call them back right away.

I rarely use my phone as a phone, but I text a lot and actually couldn’t do some things I needed to because I couldn’t get my 2FA code for something that was sent via text. It’s not something I couldn’t have gotten around if i cared all that much, but I was still fairly annoyed at the inability to text. I never actually had a phone outage because I enabled wifi calling forever ago.

That's mainly what I use it for now is reception of 2FA codes.  I don't usually talk on the phone all that much.  All the other messages I can get via wi-fi.  Such as iMessages, FB messenger, or the desktop SnapChat which is one of the primary method my sibling units use to communicate with me.

Yup, I have a few things that i haven’t switched over to authenticator, including turbo tax which was what alerted me to the issue. No big, but i was irritated. I had a work thing or two where i couldn’t get codes too. Nothing that was so bad i couldn’t either wait or go a different way, but enough to put me in a foul mood lol.

I'm concentrating on getting my bar exam application done first before I worry about taxes this year.  I have to the 15th to put the application in otherwise I have to eat an extra $200 for the "late fee."

I have the Google authenticator on my phone but it's mainly for work right now.

I still have the Microsoft authenticator on my phone but it was mainly for school and I haven't really used it too much.
