Mormon stories Podcast

Recommended Posts

Right now I binge watch "Mormon stories podcast" with John Dehlin and I am so fascinated about it. These episodes are so long and have multiple parts but I already watched 2 or three of them while knitting. It is so interesting. Does anybody else listen to these? I really like John Dehlins voice and the questions he asks, the stories of the guests are so various and interesting. He is doing this since 2005 and I definitely will search for his story when I finished the episode I watch right now (real housewives of Salt Lake City).

I watched the one about Gretchen Day, that woman is really tough. I watched "Loosing faith as a BYU professor". I watched "mormon bishop loosing his faith and falling in love with a divorced woman". It somehow makes myself analyse my own faith journey during the last years as I switched from catholic to protestant/lutheran faith. It helps me to look deeper into my own reasons and feelings and I try to verbalise them more. My brain is stimulated listening to these people, I can't explain it better.

Is anyone else watching this? Is there already a thread about it? I did not find one.

Fellow Mormon Stories listener here.  So much about how that cult negatively impacts their memoirs the same as with the IFB/IBLP folks.  Many heartbreaking stories, but if you have the time to listen to these long format interviews, many are quite fascinating.  John and his wife Margie are kind, intelligent human beings who care deeply about making sure those involved in Mormonism have full disclosure about what happens there. They also are super supportive of the LGBTQ+ community.

‘Unfortunately there has been drama with a former employee and John which has turned me off a bit….but I do think they are telling important stories.

Yes, I have been listening to John Dehlin and branching off from there.  I am currently listening to his guest John Hamer, who is affiliated with a break-off congregation.  I skip around quite a bit, and recently I found some episodes on the archaeology and geography (or lack thereof) of the Book of Mormon.  Depending on your interests, you might also enjoy podcasts by Lindsay Hansen Park, who focuses on polygamy and feminist issues.  Sunstone Mormon History podcasts are also varied and interesting.  So many podcasts!  I’m finding church histories intriguing and think more people should examine their own church histories, for better or worse.

I just finished the Real Housewives episodes (1369-1371) plus the follow-up with Heather Gay (“Bad Mormon” episode 1727).  So interesting that the LDS church is suing her for the trademark right to the name “Bad Mormon.”

The episodes (684-686) where John interviews his wife Margi Dehlin were so enlightening and emotional.  They’ve had their marital rough patches.

Now I’m listening to something a little different.  Episodes 1199-1202 deal with Scientology.  The podcasts open with the history of L. Ron Hubbard, and host John Dehlin keeps finding parallels to the founding of Mormonism.

It’s a little strange; I’m not involved in any religion, nor on a particular faith journey.  I’ve always been interested in church histories and these podcasts are so chock full of history and doctrine development, that I can’t stop listening.

I remember watching the Mormon Stories episode, where John Dehlin and his guest Stephen Hassan compared the LDS Church to the B. I.T.E. model, along with a follow up where John Dehlin interviewed a number of ex-Mormons about their own experiences. I will link both below.  Another channel , that is from the perspective of a former LDS is ExMo Lex . I will also post a link to her channel below the other two , if anyone happens to be interested.

I continue to listen to John Dehlin and have branched off from there.  I’m getting more familiar with the BITE model.

I enjoy the Exmo Lex videos, too.  She’s very down to earth and relatable.  Another channel I’ve enjoyed is Radio Free Mormon, who is very articulate and has a legal background.  Mormonish is another channel that I find interesting.  There are two recent episodes (a third is upcoming) with Dr. John Lundwall, which was thought provoking (subject evolving linguistics).

I hadn't seen this thread back in February when it started.  I went through a Mormon Stories podcast phase for a bit but they are just so long, lol.  The one on the second anointment was really fascinating.  I really like Jordan and McKay's videos (although tbh I haven't watched them in a few months either).  They have ones that go through what happens in the temple ceremonies.

I haven't listened to those ones but I can recommend a podcast done by friends of mine. I was at school with them and watched firsthand their crisis of faith. Their experiences definitely influenced my beliefs and helped me deconstruct some of the teachings.

Spoiler

It's called Mormon Raised and it was done by three brothers. There are no new episodes since 2020 but the topics cover almost everything. Warning: one of the early episodes gets pretty graphic. I don't think I could look that particular brother in the eye with a straight face ever again. Didn't need to know that detail, thanks!

I’ve been listening to them for about a year now. The episode with  the Bishop who resigned from the pulpit and his story has been very interesting.
