Maxwell 56: Mary Found Freedom to Get Engaged

Not on topic, but on topic:

Have we discussed whether we think Anna Craig Maxwell and Jesse are preventing vs. dealing with infertility? Maxhell has gone off the rails and so I feel like preventing is a distinct possibility.

I think John, joe, and Jesse were perhaps getting away with things in maxhell long before we knew about the girls breaking free. Even when the were living at home they were probably watched a lot less closely due to their penis bearer status. If they were each other’s accountability in the world they perhaps were loosening the strings for themselves.
Now, John’s marriage to chelsey may have kept him closer (literally and metaphorically) to maxhell. But joe and jesse aren’t even living that close anymore. So really they could be quite more mainstream then even their family knows.

I have to laugh that only once in any of this generational talk has GenX been mentioned.

There's an entire generation that exists between Boomers and Millenials. The youngest Boomers are 60. The oldest Millenials are 42. When you talk about people between 43 and 60, those are GenXers, not Boomers.

FB was not invented for Boomers, nor is it "for Boomers". It was originally made for Millenials by a Millenial.

I'm not sure why we spend so much time drawing lines around which generations are "allowed" to use which social media platforms.

Thank you.

Hey, every discussion of which generation is "allowed" to do X or Y is guaranteed to include someone forgetting that us GenXers exist. : )

I'm a GenXer, I use Facebook to keep up with family around the country and friends around the world, local businesses, and community events. Do I give a flying fig about whether marketing specialists believe  I am "authorized" to use it, or whether I am using it in the "correct way" according to my demographic profile? No I don't. F**k that noise.

If a social media tool is useful to you and brings you joy, use it. Don't let "trend forecasters" and corporate marketing consultants run your life.

Silent seems to still be an odd one, not least because talkies had replaced silent film well before 1946. Maybe we should go with "golden" as in "golden age of cinema" for that cohort and "teever" as in "TV" for Boomer? That would make X the VCR generation, and Y/millenial the "internets", or possibly the dial-ups. Zoomers/Y can stay put, heh, and who knows what defining technology will emerge for Alpha!

I consider myself part of the MTV generation, as I had it on literally any time I was awake (and had that VCR programmed to record Headbanger's Ball in case I wasn't) for basically a full decade or more of my life. (OK, with a couple exceptions... when the original Transformers cartoon was on after school, and when we were playing video games. But otherwise it was MTV!)

Anna Craig Maxwell could be in college for all we know. It’s never seemed as if she cared too much what Steve thought.

She's the fundie that I struggle to not put my own ideas on, the way many people do for Jana Duggar. She literally looks like a generic member of my friend group -and all of us are highly educated with a mix of masters and PhDs.

Didn't Anna Craig Maxwell and Jesse move away into a flat in a city soon after marriage as they wanted to experience a different type of life?  It seems to me that they were doing things differently from the off and it wouldn't surprise me at all if that extended to family planning.

I would love it if Anna and Jesse were using some sort of contraception. That would piss Steve and his vasectomy reversal off so bad.

She's he one that they asked what she wanted to be called, since there was already an Anna and an Anna Marie, and she just said "Anna".

You know Steve wanted to refer to her as something else.

So happy for Mary and Sam!

Since Sam is graduating next Spring, and Mary has another year to go, do you think she’ll return to ABC next Fall?  Or will they head out to the mission field somewhere?

I hope she finishes her degree.

Does Mary really have another full year after Sam is done? Is that factoring in the online courses she took before she arrived?

I don't remember the specific post, but they posted about it not long after the wedding. A couple of times, they did refer to her as Anna Patrice, and then they posted that she just wanted to be called Anna. It seemed clear from the post they weren't happy about it.

They mentioned on the blog that Christopher refers to Anna-Marie as Anna-Marie in private. Apparently she was never called that till she married Christopher. I would be pissed if after marriage my spouse starting calling me by my first & middle name when I was never called that before.

For those here who say they don't use social media, forums such as freejinger ARE social media. As was Usenet, where I first started connecting with people in 1990.

I thought about this after I made my comment about using SM.  I meant that I don't put myself out there publicly for a variety of reasons, but I do enjoy interacting when the stakes are low.  My life is not that interesting, and I'm a terrible photographer.  Also I would never take a selfie because I'm not at all photogenic.

I love FJ because it seems like people here are just the right amount of snarky and compassionate (if that makes sense).  I also love learning more about what growing up with extreme religion was like for some of the people here.

I have never taken a selfie in my life. I look bad enough in photos when other people take them (seriously, I look really, really bad, cameras do not like me), why on earth would I take one myself??? :laughing-rolling:

You know what’s incredibly embarrassing for me to admit. I have selfies from the mid 90s where I just turned around a regular flash camera and pointed it at my face. Then I didn’t see how it turned out for weeks. I was a bored teenager with a few pictures left on the roll to waste.

I'm a generation xer here and I fully admit to taking selfies when I'm hiking. Sadly I don't get to see my mom every year, so I sent her a selfie or two from each hike so she can see me. I will be seeing her next summer though, as my uncle is not expected to live much longer and my aunt is already planning to have him cremated and have a memorial service next summer.

Some may want to know how we plan to identify another Anna in the family to help keep confusion down amongst the Maxwell Annas. We don’t know yet!

When Christopher married his Anna, through family discussion, Anna Marie was suggested. She concurred, and so it was.

We have some options concerning Jesse’s Anna and while no specific one has been discussed yet, one may work itself into use. The newest Anna Maxwell (see it is confusing already) would like her aunt name to be Tia Anna rather than Aunt Anna so maybe it will be Tia Anna.

And we could always call Tia Anna by her first and middle name when we aren’t talking about her as an Auntie.

Ask in a year, and we will have it all worked out!

“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches,
and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” Proverbs 22:1

"We have some options..."

WE (not Anna). I hope Jesse supported Anna very vocally!

Me too. I stopped really checking or carrying about my facebook sometime when everyone started to be on it. I hated it once my relatives started commenting on my stuff or posting nonsensical garbage. I liked having a place for just me and people I chose to let in. But once all the aunts and parents and HR started checking FB,EVEN though there was nothing remotely objectionable to normal humans, it stopped being fun. Curating content and dealing with multiple lists of who can see what was just annoying. And don't get me started on groups and all the borderline illiterate weirdos who join groups but still have no idea how the internet works.

I have been to more funerals in the past two years than in 10 years before that.  My father passed away two months ago.  My father didn't have facebook, but some of the friends and relatives who passed had it.  What I would give to see just one more post or comment from them.  Somehow the stuff they posted doesn't seem nonsensical when they're not on this earth any more.

Thought some might find this interesting, (I know I do). Here’s a list of the different generational names throughout the ages:

Pretty cool, yeah?

Oregon Trail Generation is definitely my preferred name for myself. We really our this tiny little microcosm.

I remember getting to play the original Oregon Trail in speech therapy in elementary school. Then when I was in high school Oregon Trail 2 came out and I got it for a gift and I loooooved that game. It let you choose where you wanted to end up - Oregon or California. For some reason I could never make it to California, we always died in the desert, but the game was difficult enough - for me at least - that I was happy to make it to Oregon.

I was thinking the other day…

I bet, when Nathan got married in January 2002, Sarah didn’t think it’d be over 20 years till her own wedding, with her brothers all marrying first. Steve and Teri are such dickheads, particularly with that part in her blog bio that she wanted to be a wife and mother someday but was “waiting on the Lord for that right guy”. I hope she’s truly happy with her new husband!
