I’m not surprised he isn’t interested in science. I bet they teach the Ken Hamm science.

Discussion-based science sounds AWFUL. If he went to actual school and did actual high school science curriculum, he'd probably like it a lot better than whatever that mess was that she described.

You know what science she should have taught him? The science of reproduction, birth control, condoms, natural family planning, and STDs.

She's mom to 10 arrows! 😏

1 son is recently married (with a Master's Degree) and 1 daughter is off at (non-bible) college. That leaves 8 kids at home. One bedroom is being given over to the new barely-teenage family of three.

These poor kids. I know some folks will disagree with me on this, but adoption might a better option all around for this arrow-to-be.

I think a huge factor in decent teen parenting is family support. If both families are willing to help out, the kid will probably be ok. I know a teen mom (younger sister of a high school classmate) who had tons of family support. They paid for daycare so the teen could finish high school like normal. She then was able to attend a local college. All because her parents would help watch the baby and financially support them while she finished her education. She got a good job and was able to move out with her daughter when she was in her 20s. A lot of teen moms come from poor families. Their parents can try to help out, but they can’t financially support their teen and her baby. To me, it’s partly why so many teen parents struggle (besides the fact that they are so immature and poor decision makers).

This is why anti abortion laws are so sickening to me: it’s used to keep the poor people poor.

I do wish all abortions were free. Along with just universal health care in general.

If you venture over to the Caldwell family Instagram, there's a series of photos titled 'She's a hugger'. There's an adorable little girl (I'm assuming Brooklyn) hugging everyone, including a baby. It can't be Moriah because she's at least 1.5 years old now. If it's JoKen's baby, I'm guessing girl based on the onesies (fundies are pretty gender specific when I comes to clothing colors).

They had a picture of Brooklyn and Moriah together. They look a lot alike.

The same thing for lack of access to other reproductive rights.

In the comments some one confirms that it's baby #4 but I don't recognize the handle.

Amy is still homeschooling 7 blessings, including the father-to-be (I believe they have a 19-year who has graduated high school). She doesn't really have time to take care of a grandkid, although I guess some of her older daughters will be saddled with helping raise their new niece/nephew. Its just sad all around. Two barely 17-year olds marrying in a fundy culture that doesn't believe in divorce.

I’m guessing the girl’s family is religious too. I hope they help out. And I hope they don’t have a huge family too.

The wedding actually was last weekend--and she discusses the church situation in her new column: https://raisingarrows.net/large-family-homeschool-life-week-7-2023/

"Many of his friends attend a church we used to go to. A month or so before finding out our son’s girlfriend was pregnant, we had left that church due to doctrinal differences and concerns we had over things being said from the pulpit. However, our son and his girlfriend were still attending Youth Group there until that day in September when we found out she was pregnant.

After that, it became very clear our son was not welcome in that church, and would have to jump through a multitude of hoops to prove to them that he was repentant (something we addressed as a family immediately). He would not have been allowed to sit with his girlfriend and her family or even converse with her because the church believed it would give the appearance of evil. There are many other things we totally disagreed with church leadership on that I may someday be willing to talk about, but suffice it to say, we decided then and there our son would not step foot near that church as long as he was under our roof.

It was a horrible experience and handled rather contrary to Scripture, but we are incredibly thankful to be in a Christ-centered church now. It is the pastor of our current church that will be marrying the kids this weekend. Thankful for how he stepped in and counseled them, and is now performing the ceremony for them...We attend a Calvary Chapel church plant"

Ahhhh now I’m so curious about what made them leave in the first place! I’m very nosy like that.

They had a daughter who died in 2008 so there are "only" 5 kids at home (6 kids with this now married son).   The youngest has a genetic condition and requires some extra medical care but luckily the dad is in the military (or at least he was when I followed them more closely) so they have regular insurance and got her the care she needed.

Yes, he's still in the military and they live near a base in Kansas, so they have access to base health care & shopping. I believe that the newly married teen father to be works part time bagging groceries at the base commissary.

Before Kim "Life in a Shoe" Coghlan stopped blogging, she sometimes co-authored things with Amy Roberts (this blogger). The Coghlan also had an unwed mother situation, I believe.

I looked up the astronomy textbook she mentioned: its full title is “exploring creation with astronomy” and the recommended grade level is k-6. I also noticed the “academic transcripts” she included while raving about the software had As for every single subject. Well yeah if your 17yr old is doing “discussion based” science with an elementary school textbook then one would hope he does get an A. I’m surprised her older children were accepted to college.

I bet the ones who went to college are the kids who need little instruction and are self learners. They probably don’t have any learning difference and could be left to their own devices. It’s easy to be a homeschool parent to kids like that.

They also had the benefit of fewer siblings competing for attention when they were elementary school aged.

I always sort of figured the oldest kids got the best educations while the youngest didn’t. Probably because their parents were too burnt out. However if you sell your family for money on tv, you can afford a tutor like the Duggars and Bateses. But most can’t do that.

Kim’s oldest daughter, Deanna, married Tyler Mullins at 19 before getting divorced. She then had her first child while unmarried. She and the father got married when the baby was 10 months old. She had four kids in two and a half years.

  1. Willie Ryan born January 2018 (Deanna and Brooks Baker got married in October 2018)
  2. Wayne (twin) born May 2019
  3. Wyatt (twin) born May 2019
  4. Brooks Jr. born July 2020

Perry and Kim’s current life looks nothing like their life in the shoe. It’s crazy how so much can change in one fundie family. But they often do. Rarely does a family stay just the same for 30 years straight.

Well, there's actually two. https://www.apologia.com/product/apologia-high-school-astronomy/

I'd like to think he was doing the high school level instead.

The two subjects she listed for 9th and 10th are in Apologia's middle school science section. Not really an issue as some children are more interested in science and/or math than others, but her children don't appear ahead of their public school counterparts. The courses she lists on Homeschool Hall are on par with the minimum high school requirements to graduate in most states.
