I just had a baby, and I keep wanting to refer to the pediatrician as the veterinarian 😂

Literally every newly pregnant woman I have even know has said "Twins run in my family..."

Twins do run in my family, 8 sets in the last 2 generations (7 birth years from 1960s-1980 and the last set 2003; the one in 2003 I know was natural twins, not IVF, they were honeymoon twins!).

However, people forget that some twins in the family have no effect on if my daughters could have twins. For example, my 1st cousin with twins born in 2003 - she married into the family- no genetic connection to increase the odds of my daughters having twins. On the flip side, I am a fraternal boy/girl twin and their paternal grandpa was a fraternal boy/girl twin, now they have two genetic possibilities that may increase their chances to have twins. My ex-husband and his mom said on several occasions that I had more of probability to have twins because I am a twin and my father-in-law was a twin ...umm, yeah, no. I had to correct them several times. They finally stopped.

My FIL was born in the 1940s and I was born in the 1970s which means we were natural twins. Fast forward to the last 15 years or so, twins are very prevalent. At one time in my neighborhood (about 50 homes) there were 7 sets of twins and 1 set of triplets. I know for sure one set was conceived by IVF, I am fairly certain a couple of the others were too (I don't ask, not my business). People may think twins run in their family, but they don't run genetically in the family because IVF skews the data.

In the early 2000s almost all the babies in our level 3 NICU were a multiple. So many twins, trips and a few quads. At that time, any confinement greater than twins was considered a procedural failure. Almost none of these babies were the result of unassisted conceptions.

My husband has a first cousin who has three children and all her children have the same first name as my three children. What are the chances? Only one of her children  has a family name. My youngest child was born after her third child. We were at my husband’s family home on one occasion when an aunt asked if we were to have a third child what might our name choices be. I told her and later that afternoon Helena had her third child naming him Felix which was my choice for a boy. The aunt couldn’t believe it, such a strange coincidence. (Names altered for privacy.)

I can think of three- Joshua, Jim Bob, Michelle. Its very telling that Mother of the Year has no grand babies named after her.

Except Gracie, who shares her middle name (Annette).

I agree with what you mean about MIchelle not being named after, but I think the main reason is that the girls are named particularly trendily, while boys are more likely to be named after family members, particularly a first boy. I think style trumps quite a lot of other considerations.

Someone on fj once said they worked in a fertility clinic and never saw anyone over the age of, I think 42, who successfully gave birth using their own eggs (when using ivf). Based on that? Either Hillary froze her own eggs some time ago or she’s using donor eggs.

Weird timing for this - I just found out a family member who had been trying for many years just had first baby in her mid-40’s - with IVF, but her own eggs. I’ve known several other acquaintances/friends/family members who had babies well into their mid-late 40’s — but not 1st babies, and not with reproductive assistance. More often the surprise! type

Likely donor eggs, but almost definitely some medical intervention involved. My MIL had her last at 48, and he was healthy, but in terms of overall life, I think it’s better for all concerned if the parents are a more moderate reproductive age. My own aunt had parents in their forties and fifties and had no living parents by age 27.  And this concern is for both mother and baby (ies). First baby at 48 and twins ratchets up the concerns-

Yeah, I put in “with ivf” because I’ve had family members spontaneously conceive in their mid 40’s, too. Obviously it’s possible they’re from Hillary’s own eggs but I’d be surprised.

I had an IVF pregnancy with my own eggs at 43. Almost 44 at birth. I’m probably an outlier though. My Dr told me after 42 chances are the same with and without help. I just happened to be single so no chance of it happening naturally.

A colleague’s sister had 2 successful pregnancies with donor embryos when she was 49 and 51 respectively. She went to Spain for the treatment as she wouldn’t have been eligible in the UK. 2 beautiful girls who do look very Mediterranean (dark eyes, hair and olive skin) whereas neither she nor her husband looked like this. She sadly died from cancer when the youngest was 9. She and her husband had an acrimonious divorce leading up to her death. He was 20 years older than her and felt unable to cope with the girls full time, so they ended up living with their aunt.

My SIL had a natural pregnancy at 45, baby was born when she was 46. First baby. Healthy pregnancy. At every single medical appointment, she was asked if it was an IVF or if she was taking some medecines to sustain the pregnancy.

I went to school with a girl whose mom got pregnant at 48 years old. Elder sister was 23! Mom thought she was on menopause.

But of course they are exceptions.

Good for you! Becoming a single mother by choice is a difficult decision. I'm glad you were able to make it happen. (I was too chicken. Too poor too, but mostly too chicken.)

The oldest woman to have a baby I know in real life got pregnant at 46 and had the baby at 47. It was after multiple IVF attempts. They were her eggs but I think they were retrieved previously. Like maybe a year before when trying IVF. The doctor transferred three embryos and she had twins. It’s very likely Hilary Swank had some help.

A girl I went to high school with's mom got pregnant when this girl was a senior in high school. The mom first assumed it was menopause and then some sort of tumor. It wasn't a tumor, it was a bouncing baby boy. Friend's mom must have been mid-40's at the time.

A friend of my mom had a hard time getting pregnant. It took them 4 years to have the first one, 10 years later, the 2nd one and 14 months later, the third one. Extremely Catholic, no medical intervention.

Thank you. I tend to be an over thinker. I’m lucky that I had a lot of family support or I wouldn’t have been able to do it. Took me 2 years. All the anxiety of trying to conceive is forgotten now, and being replaced by the anxiety that comes with having a preteen who’s hormones are starting to rage. 😛

The girls are teenagers now and apparently doing well at school. Their dad does love them but he’s an odd  fellow. They are now living with his niece (who is in her 40s) as she lives nearer to their high school, but they spend a lot of time with my friend, their aunt. I really hope life is good to them from now onwards.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
