One million dead from COVID in 2022: WHO

One million people have died from COVID-19 in 2022, officials from the World Health Organization said on Thursday, marking yet another “tragic milestone” in the pandemic. The agency has recorded about 6.45 million deaths since the coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan, China in late 2019. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the WHO, said the latest figure is especially disheartening because there are life-saving measures such as vaccination, masking and ventilation available now. “This week, we crossed the tragic milestone of one million reported deaths so far this year,” he said at a press briefing. “We cannot say we are learning to live with COVID-19 when one million people have died with COVID-19 this year alone, when we are two-and-a-half years into the pandemic and have all the tools necessary to prevent these deaths.”

The virus obviously isn't done with us yet.

An update from last week - my pcr was negative and mum tested clear very soon after her rebound positive (she still isolated though).

The NSW premier is pushing for isolation to be scrapped but it’s likely to drop from 7 days to 5 later this week instead. I really hope there are firm rules around symptomatic cases especially, and that they need a negative test to get out of iso at 5 days. Our numbers will surely skyrocket yet again. At work we are seeing that people coming back after 7 days of iso are still contagious. Imagine what coming back after 5 days will do.

Swissmedic already approved the new bivalent booster of Moderna. This is excellent news since our university I work at will be fully in person this Fall. I‘m relieved since we don‘t have any measures anymore (not even isolation) and very few people bother to test at all.

We are looking forward to getting another booster as soon as possible.  Especially since we’ve just been contacted about our first confirmed exposure, courtesy of our best friend.  He started feeling bad Monday, and tested positive.  My husband was with him Friday, so who knows if he was contagious then.  Unfortunately, our friend escorted his 90-year-old mother to a memorial service this weekend.  He was certainly infected then.  I’m thinking of all those households and assisted living residents who might have been exposed.

The friend may have caught it at the memorial service.  The incubation period can now be very short.  The average I think is now 3 days so that means it can be as little as one day from exposure to symptoms.

Isolation for asymptomatic people has been cut to 5 days and masks are no longer required on domestic flights 😩

And cases are dropping dramatically! Really, very few healthy vaccinated people are dying of Covid. Look at the numbers.

Thanks for being so cavalier.

Some of us on here are not young and healthy and are still at risk or high risk as are our parents. Cases are dropping but not dropping "dramatically" and are seriously underreported due to home testing and people who don't bother getting tested at all.  The risks of long COVID are still there and are still serious.  Thanks to people like you, my life is unlikely to return to "normal" for a long time, if ever before I die hopefully not of COVID.

Our friend is on day six with Covid.  He’s recovering slowly, but still testing positive.  He is only taking home tests, so he won’t count in official totals.

We went in to get our flu shots last week, but because the pharmacy staff is down because of Covid, we couldn’t get our shots.  We’ll try again tomorrow.  We know of more people with Covid than ever, and it’s likely because people are no longer taking precautions.  There may not be as many deaths, but it’s still impacting daily life.

Australian actuarial studies show an increase in mortality for May 2022, mostly due to covid-19:

Spoiler

Partly due to a rise in covid-19 related cardiovascular disease in younger groups than it is usually seen in.

Spoiler

As always try to avoid getting it - and try to avoid getting it multiple times.

Yet still the message is “Covid is mild” 🙄

When I had Covid in June yes I did  home tests. However, at least in my county there’s a way online or by phone to report yourself into the numbers which I did by the way.

mild? My case may have been considered mild compared to people who end up in the hospital on a vent since I was able to stay home work from home while I had Covid that was an entire experience, but I coughed for three weeks with this particular variant. It’s not fun with a cough for three weeks. When I get a common cold I don’t cough for three weeks. And if I am it means that I’ve probably got an infection of some sort or we’ve descended into bronchitis and I need to go to the doctor for an antibiotic and steroids.  So can we cut the crap with the “mild”

The medical establishment needs a different word from mild to describe cases that don't need hospitalization.  That's the definition they're working with most of the time.  To the average person mild tends to translate as a three day cold that barely slows them down.  That's what it used to mean to me.

I see so it's fine if the elderly and sick die?  How compassionate of you.  May you never find yourself vulnerable or suffering the effects of long COVID or perhaps that's what we should wish for you?   Over 300 people are dying of COVID every day.  Maybe you should let them ad their families know how mild and unimportant COVID is.

If mildness is defined by not needing hospitalization then yes, this disease is mild. So are then all those chronic diseases that often leave people disabled.

I just came back from a visit at my parents. My mom with MECFS could only be with us for three hours before she had to lay down again. If she had stayed only 30mins longer she would’ve been bedridden with pain for a few weeks. If there are people here who don’t believe me, the medical term for this is post exertional malaise and is a hallmark symptom of MECFS.

We got our flu shots today, and asked the pharmacist for the scoop on the understaffing.  They had to let a couple people go who refused the Covid vaccine.  They haven’t been able to hire, because apparently the only people available for hire are the ones who won’t be hired because they are anti-vaxxers.  They had to shut the drive-through window, and the remaining staff are so overwhelmed that they are considering leaving.  It’s a vicious cycle!  Also, they will continue the vaccine program there (for now), but testing is becoming too time-consuming, so no future lab services (i.e, Covid tests).

We feel lucky to have gotten the vaccinations before the whole darn pharmacy shuts down.

Don't forget "cases are going down, the pandemic is over!" every 4-6 months.

A couple celebrated their 49th anniversary isolated in their Vienna hotel room, racking up $3,000 in extra lodging costs. An annual beach house getaway ended with 14 of the 29 guests testing positive for covid. A woman discovered she was infected after landing in Seattle for a family reunion — and decided to keep celebrating, double masked and socially distanced.

As many Americans learned this summer: The pandemic isn’t over just because you’re over it.

Covid is running through my work.  And most the people there won't wear masks and are anti-vaxx. "It's just a cold"

I'm sick of these people.

Cases and deaths are dropping fast. Great news! Follow the data.

These numbers mean that fewer elderly and sick will die. That's why it's good news, silly!

(The overwhelming number of people who die are the unvaccinated. It's not OK that they die, but I can't make them take the vaccine).

Yes, cases are falling more rapidly NOW.  They are still less than ideal.

You're the silly rabbit for arguing points you obviously do not track scientifically.

Cases for unvaccinated are still the highest, but the elderly are second.  We're moving out of the dying being overwhelmingly the unvaccinated. You're right most (not all) unvaccinated are creating their own problem.  Some people cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons like allergies and adverse reactions.  As time goes on the fully vaccinated elderly may become the top group for deaths and for several weeks in our county have been the top group.  It was fully expected.  It's math.  After almost all the unvaccinated get COVID which we're sadly approaching, the elderly will move back to the top of the death rates or tie the unvaccinated.

This is the doctor whose guidance I usually follow.  He's in the older group and somewhat less at risk than I am.  It isn't the view of everyone for sure, but for people over 65 he makes sense to me.
