Josh and Anna 55: Settling in at Seagoville

I think he’ll likely be lonely and be glad to see his family. I guess he might also jump in to “prison ministry” type programs right away. He can get some kind of narcissistic supply from being a leader and maybe the religiosity will be a normalizing thing. Or he could completely reject it too. I wonder.

I actually wonder if the monotony of the visits will have Anna and the kids opting out in a year or two. I imagine it’s really hard to maintain any kind of relationship like that.

This is Texas we're talking about here.

It's the federal prison system though.  I don't remember a vaccination requirement, but visits are limited due to COVID.  Two hours twice a month and only two visitors unless they take a lap child for a total of three.

Here are the rules at Josh's prison as of a few days ago. Nothing about two hours twice a month. Only that all inmates start each month with 6 points, and I understand this means that prisoners are assessed one point for weekday visits and three points for weekend and holiday visits.  Since Anna doesn't work and there are visiting hours on Monday an Friday, barring her visits taking away from other inmates' time, she could technically use all six points on weekdays and visit six times in a single month.

Visiting Josh will be an eye opening experience for Anna. She must stand in line with everyone else no special line for semi famous people. Sometimes if the count isn’t correct, weather (fog) and other issues visitation will be delayed. I had a family member there and one time on a Monday I waited in line for two hrs due to fog. You ask why they close down for fog risk of escape. She has to follow the dress rules to a tee or she will turned away. Plus if her paperwork is not completed it is also a no no. Room is small, you sit on plastic chairs next to each other, guards walk around the room, if you are caught holding hands your visit is terminated and prisoner lose visitors privileges for a certain amount of time. I viewed my visits as an educational experience, one of humorous event was when the wife showed up to visit, as she was standing in line she saw the girlfriend there also. Fight broke out and both were escorted of the property. There are gang members housed there so there are issues between visitor, I learned gang language while standing in line. Anna will definitely out of her element.

I’m curious, is gang language code words or signs like sign language?

Looking at the schedule Anna will have to be there at a certain time for the start of the visit. No more Duggar time.

It seems like Anna has traded one type of drudgery in her life for another kind of drudgery. But hey, at least she has a husband, right?

I was thinking about this earlier and it would be fascinating to find out how different it will be for Anna to be in the group she presumably used to “other.” I’d also love to know: of the people who told her they were innocent, how many of them did she “bless your heart” as she mentally rolled her eyes.

Complete in-your-face cognitive dissonance.

Anna is breaking her instagram fast.  Me thinks she's with her sister near her hubby, waiting to see him as soon as she's allowed.

Pris is one of the prettiest women really, but she has the saddest hundred yard stare. I just can't get past the resignation and sadness in her eyes.

The website shows them at COVID level 3.

The website COVID visiting protocols are here:

Apparently they can’t use the vending machines because of Covid either.  And if they have a “no contact” partition, forget about playing cards or checkers.

I suspect Anna will be in for a shock too if/when she is allowed in-person contact. My understanding is so far she has only had phone and video visits when he has been in custody.

This is not a peaceful, sweet environment. She will contend with guards interpreting rules differently than she wishes, patting her down for simple reasons like an underwire bra, other women in line with her with heartbreaking stories, plenty of language and topics of conversation that are not fundie approved.

If he would be in my state, the underwire bra would not be patted down, it would have to be replaced with an elastic bandeau bra or something that won't set off the metal detector or wand. At one facility, it meant that the woman in front of me in the visitor line had to leave, drive down the road until she found a store, buy a bra, and wear it back to the facility. Because you can't jiggle in a prison, either.

Another thing Anna won't be used to is the incredible language. "Fuck" is used as noun, verb, adverb..

Underwire bras are banned in federal prison.  As you say, they set off the metal detectors.  Clothing in general has a whole list of can't wear.  Most of it won't bother Anna.

Not to mention all the milder words. I don't imagine she's used to hearing "shit" that often. And she doesn't even have to visit to get an earful. When I talked with my son on the phone the other day, I could hear a guy in the background saying, "The food here is some fucked-up shit. If I see the sheriff after I get out I'm going to piss on his shoes and make him lick it up."

All that is going to do is further convince Anna of Joshua's innocence. He doesn't speak like that so he can't really be a criminal like the other inmates are. Then again, maybe Josh will enjoy being able to swear.

It was both signs and spoken language. Majority of visitors were female with kids. This was pre Covid, at that time if the prisoner had good conduct credits they had an outside visitor area where kids could play weather permitted. It was much nicer than the visitor room.

It will be interesting to see how Josh handles prison life over the long term.   Right now,  I agree, he's probably lonely and the reality of his situation is still hitting him.  Once he settles in a bit, I see things going either way: the "religious" route in the form of prison ministry, bible studies, etc.  or he will completely reject it because for the first time in his life, he doesn't have to conform to his family expectations.  No one in the prison is going to care what he does in the way that JB or Anna would.

And speaking of expectations I agree with others that Anna is in for a shock once she goes in for her visits.   She is not going to like them, they will not be what she expects.   I can see her stop taking the kids, just go by herself and eventually she stops doing that.   She is facing years of this and while right now she might be able to still romanticize Joshley in her mind, reality may eventually intrude.

Not sure all that is going to come as such a shock to Anna - didn't she accompany her dad on his prison ministry gigs? She might have a better idea of what to expect than we think.

I think the on and on ness of it may wear here down to accept reality.

That plus it must be incredibly tedious to be one of so few people who believe he’s innocent. When she married into the Duggar borg it seemed like she became one more Duggar sister. I doubt she’s been all that close with anyone but Michelle since they came back from DC. Since the car lot raid she’s probably lost even more support from various Duggar family members.

Really, this is one way she’ll be better adapted than manyvisitors. Her clothing already covers the required areas, doesn’t have slogans, she doesn’t seem to usually wear jewelry that could be used as a weapon, she tends towards comfortable, easily removable shoes….

I think both of them might be better suited — sadly— to their new lives than people expect. They’ve both been trained  to follow a metric ton of (often) nonsensical rules their entire lives.

He clearly hasn’t followed all of them - but he was raised and spent most of his life being told what he can wear, how long his hair can be, what he can say, what shows he can watch, what books he can read, what to censor - and on and on and on. He’s used to hierarchies of authority. He certainly had more physically severe punishment then he will experience in prison. Coming from a gigantic family he also grew up with cafeteria style and quality of food, short showers, noise all the time, and just the presence of people in your space - always.

She’s used to having to care for her kids, sit quietly waiting, follow orders, stare adoringly, be bored and smile. She’ll probably live for the pretty prison envelopes and being a martyr.

Guys send lovely, romantic, heartfelt, funny, insightful love letters from prison. They are often decorated with beautiful art on the envelopes that the guy either does himself or pays a fellow inmate to do. Their mooning away wife/girlfriend(s)/ wanna be’s look forward to them. Because guys in prison are often 1,000 times better as a boyfriend/husband in their make believe inside world than they ever were at home.
