Emily D Baker (Legal YouTuber) has a video up on this. Starts 50 minutes in.

She's surprised Smith wasn't escorted out "at least for a segment."

According to Wanda Sykes, someone from the Academy did approach Smith and asked him to leave but he refused.  Academy officials have said in a statement that they didn't have protocols in place to remove an attendee because they did not anticipate that there would be such a need until this happened.  I am certain that they will now be putting protocols in place for such an event if an attendee decides to try to rush the stage and physically assault another person.

I also so a video on a Buzzfeed article that showed Jada Pinkett Smith apparently laughing and clapping as her husband assaulted Chris Rock.  I'm not impressed with either Smith.  I have no idea what sort of dynamics are going on in their marriage, but I'm getting the vibe that it's not particularly healthy and perhaps Will Smith should take a break and focus on his mental health.

This article covers a lot more of what happened:

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/stephaniesoteriou/will-smith-slap-chris-rock-timeline-oscars

Chris Rock apparently didn’t know Jada has alopecia. After the assault, Rock went and apologized to host Wanda Sykes for distracting the ceremony away from her and the other hosts.

Also, the Smiths beef with Rock goes back to some jokes he made about Jada in 2016.

Does anybody know what would happen/ what it would mean if Will Smith was suspended or expelled from the Academy? What does that mean?

In a statement issued by the Board of Governors at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science on Wednesday, the academy also admitted that it had never anticipated something like this would happen at the show, which is why it didn’t appear to have a set protocol to follow.

Gee, of all the people in the world not to have ever seen A Star Is Born, 1937 or 1954 (fictional, I know, but after things like the 1974 streaker, I'm surprised they didn't have some sort of plan in place).

It was the first thing I thought of when I heard about the incident - me and Bruce Vilanch, and, as far as I can tell, nobody else!

Will Smith was just bizarre, throughout the whole mess.

You can't fire me.  I quit!

Further action could come from the Academy.  They could even strip his Oscar, although some seem to think that is extreme.

I wonder what else the Academy can do, given that he has already resigned, other than strip his Oscar.

I also wonder whether Chris Rock might eventually decide to take legal action.

Will this affect Will Smith being considered for future acting roles?  He has been popular, but I can envision potential problems with people not wanting to pay to see him and/or filmmakers not sure if he can successfully project a character other than the guy who hit Chris Rock at the Oscars.

Great thoughts on this. Wienstein and Polanski still have their Oscars so I doubt Will will lose his. He and his family will always be associated with this now.

What it means to resign from the Oscars.

Bruce Vilanch! I've forgotten how much I like his humor. Thanks for that link @thoughtful

My prediction ( based on not much of anything ) is that Will Smith will go to some sort of mental health treatment retreat/take anger management classes/ go on meds/ take a break from acting for a year or so ( if he doesn’t have something already going ) , and then things will go back to normal. He has a very nice guy persona to the public. The academy might suspend him from next years awards. Or fine him if that’s something they can do. And then it will blow over. Which seems appropriate to me.

I suspect it'll take a lot longer than a year before Academy Award staff, participants, audience, and outside viewers wouldn't be acutely aware of Will Smith's presence, to the distraction of all.  That, IMO, would be unfair to everyone but (possibly) the outside viewers,, Will Smith, and lurking reporters.  I just don't think his nice guy persona can easily overcome what transpired, especially given how spontaneously and publicly his actions at the Awards occurred.  The nice guy persona was blown and it takes awhile for trust to rebuild.

I'm also inclined to think that he'll seek advice/treatment of some sort, as I believe it can only help him and his career at this point.

I hope he's suspended from the Academy for at least a few years, but won't be surprised if it's shorter than that or even not at all.  Ironically, I believe his presence and participation in the near future would boost ratings substantially, but I also think allowing him back any time soon would damage the Academy's reputation.  We should know in a few weeks what they choose.

Sure Denzel, blame it on the devil. Somehow the devil got into Will that night.  Not his fault at all, I'm sure.  🙄

Oh no Denzel, please not "the devil made him do it " excuse.   I think Denzel is an amazing, talented, brilliant actor.  I appreciate his empathy for Will Smith, but Will wasn't caused by a demonic force to slap Chris Rock.

ETA, whenever Smith attends another televised ceremony,  hope they seat him somewhere in the middle of aisle 42

Russell Crowe's career never really recovered (from his previous heights) after his 2005 phone-throwing incident.  Some people thought that was the reason he didn't get nominated that year for Cinderella Man.

I don't think Will Smith's career is ever going to be the same.  Not that it matters, because he has enough money to go live 10 lifetimes doing whatever.  They are a toxic couple IMO and both need serious help.

"There's a saying when the devil ignores you, then you know you're doing something wrong," Washington told Jakes. "The devil goes, 'Oh no leave him alone, he's my favorite.' Conversely, when the devil comes at you, maybe it's because he's trying to do something right. And for whatever reason, the devil got ahold of him that night."

Huh what? If you do something wrong it's because you were doing something right? I just thought he was intoxicated but it happened because he's such a good guy and the devil objected?

Well we won't be seeing Will at future Oscar events for a while now

Quote

Will Smith will not be allowed to attend the Academy Awards for the next 10 years, as a result of his slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage during this year's Oscar ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced in a statement obtained by CNN.

"The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards," Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement on Friday.

The decision was made during a Board of Governors meeting held earlier in the day in Los Angeles. The meeting, initially scheduled for April 18, was expedited after Smith announced his resignation from the Academy last week.

The decision came following "tons of debate" on what the consequences of his on-stage slap should be, a board member tells CNN.

Will said he accepted the decision so at least he did that.

  • 3 months later...

Fear not people. Will has apologized to Chris via video. Why the heck a public video? Because why not. That's how we all make true, meaningful apologies,  right? And what 4 to 5 months late?

Quote from article "My behavior was unacceptable, and I'm here whenever you're ready to talk," Will Smith tells Chris Rock in a new video posted Friday.'

Sure Will, be a grown-up and call and talk to him privately instead of getting publicity.
