Jim Bob is running for state senate in a special election that is happening very soon. I don’t think he’s even trying to distract from the trial at this point. I remember that scene too! I think they had some kids talking to the camera about how JD is independent* and does his own thing, so he and Abbie aren't courting, she's his girlfriend.

I took it as TLC's attempt to show the Duggar family wasn't a cult (cults do not like independence) and also inform the viewers JD is a pilot. ✈️ Who knew?  

*Not in the way most of us would define the word, but independent meaning a Duggar who didn't follow the same path as his married siblings.

I think fundies are slowly falling away from the courtship model. Therefore, saying boyfriend and girlfriend is way more accepted now than 10 years ago. Those would have been dirty words back in 2011. But since then, so many people have fallen from the fundie pedestal  (Gothard, Harris, Phillips) to name a few. Believe it or not, fundie norms can change. But it’s usually crazy slow. Like frumpers changing to modern modest. I think courtship is changing too. It will look similar. But I think the no touch courtships and kiss at the alter is becoming a little less popular and they are more accepting of slight difference.

And maybe because JD was nearing 30, the parameters were different (and should have been different). Marriage at near thirty, is very different from marriage at 19.

I think if there's change, for the moment, it will be small. Things like holding hands, front-hugging and maybe kissing once engaged, but otherwise the change will only be in the name (ditching the term courtship). I agree with previous poster who said the Duggars now want to appear more mainstream to the general public. They will still be doing ''dating with a purpose'' and ''not giving pieces of your heart away''. I also think chaperones will be involved for a while.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see them letting their kids be normal ''boyfriend/girlfriend'' just yet.

No, definitely not. That’s what I meant when I said change goes slow. They aren’t suddenly going to be completely mainstream in their relationships.

If there was nothing going on with Jana and Stephen why would Jana seem to always be the chaperone when there are a few brothers who could have accompanied Jer instead. They were pictured standing or sitting next to each other often enough to convince me something was going on at the time.

There’s a photo of them at a wedding where his tie matched her dress. They were standing near each other in several photos over several months, and while she could have been a regular chaperone for Jed and just friends with Stephen, it seemed pretty likely they were getting to know each other too. Did we get a confirmation from an FJer who claimed to have inside information? Who was that? Have we heard from them recently?

Plus why was she sitting with Stephen at the last Wissmann christmas get together if she was chaperoning? She would be sitting with her brother or the Wissmann girls because I’m sure she’s friendly with at least one of them. Elizabeth Wissmann is close to Jana’s age. I could see them being friendly. It just doesn’t make much sense that Jana would be the constant chaperone.

I only saw the one photo from Christmas, so thank you. I wish she'd find someone so she could escape. I don't see a Duggar daughter moving out on her own so marriage is her only likely exit. She's old enough now not to end up with 19 kids. Sometimes I wonder if she is deliberately choosing the life she has now. There are no babies to tend, everyone is old enough to be responsible for themselves, nobody needs a buddy, and the younger kids are capable of taking over the cooking, laundry, and housework duties. Perhaps she is free to decorate homes, travel, visit her siblings and their children when she wants, but doesn't have to be concerned with supporting herself completely, or taking care of a husband and her own children.

I think that there might come a point where JB does allow Jana to move out into a gifted home of her own. He’s given everyone else a property of their own at some point, why not Jana. I could also see Jana and Laura moving into together like lots of young gals do at some point. Not as partners, but as friends and roommates. They are definitely older than most who would do this, but… it could be a way out of JBs house.

One element of fundie belief and child rearing that has always left me reallllllly scratching my head is how they treat youngsters, especially females, as adults, yet treat adults as children. It’s such a weird, convoluted approach. If 20 year old Jana was able to care for a medically fragile Josie while JB and M cavorted around the country and to MX, Jana, at nearing 32, is fully capable of living on her own.

If Jana and Laura don’t marry in the next few years, I could see them getting a place together. The Duggars seem to trust Laura. Maybe they would allow it if she had a roommate they trust.

I’m sure she will be ignoring a ton of questions. I’m guessing maybe only 10% will actually be answered.
