Maxwell 51: Empty Nesters, Empty Vesters? End of an Era

If he is related to a Daniel Hock who was also a ABC Gospel Herald a few years ago, he's a missionary kid who grew up near Montevideo. Its seems likely that he's Daniel's younger brother--and he's wearing a Uruguayan football jersey in this photo. Their parents are Keith and Wendy Hock (see https://www.biblicalministries.org/see/blog/2020/10/26/planning-to-go-willing-to-stay/):

Great find!  He does seem to be everywhere Mary is pictured, doesn't he?

Is this why Steve let Anna and Mary go on those mission trips, and now to college?  Are one (or both) of them planning on being part of a missionary couple?

Is that the same guy that was hugging Steve?  At Steve’s birthday party, posted on max blog.

new here. Was just wondering

I believe that's Joseph (one of his sons) hugging Steve.

On another note, I don't think the Open Door church is the one that the Maxwells go to.  That's the church they visit during Christmas when they have a Bethlehem display.

That's how it started, but it is the one they go to. When the church was posting live feeds of its Sunday sermons, which was up until about six months ago, you would regularly see the Maxwells (the unmarried girls, Steve and Teri and Mel and Nate's family) in the same spot of the pews.

Nate has also spoken or led prayers a few times.

Plus Chelsy and John are actually in the video in the banner on the website (though I don't think they attend there any more).

It looks like he may have grown up in Uruguay. A white fundie family in Uruguay? My guess is that they were missionaries. And we know Mary and Anna want to be missionaries.

And the whole family has their own facebook...  lol

The MaxFam were attending a Sunday evening church service while they were still running their retirement home church. It was later when COVID shut it down that they transitioned back to a morning church service. So possibly there are two churches in their rotation. I wish I could shake the hand of the pastor who got those sad sad SAHDs to college. Hats off to him!

I don’t think it’s probable but I do wonder if Steve and Teri are really enjoying their quiet house and it finally being just the two of them.

When Steve decreed how they would live I don’t think he envisioned that his children would stay home for as long as they did. I think he assumed they would eventually marry other christians he would choose and approve of and he wouldn’t spend so long living with adult children.

Steve is so rigid however maybe he misses pontificating in person to his kids and spends his day micromanaging Teri and delivering his sermons by phone or email to all his children.

I was thinking about that, too.  I feel a bit sorry for Teri because you just know he's using all his pontificating energy on her.  Well, maybe he saves a bit for those Seriously Steve emails, but she must be getting the worst of it.

I think this pastor that encouraged this *opportunity and education* is a genius.  I just have a gut feeling that there was pastoral counseling going on ( my assumption is Sarah/depression) and the pastor was trying to help get the girls out of the house and from his insane grasp and KNEW that this was the best way to get them more education, opportunity for meeting new people and life choices.  Even thought it is a religious college we all know that there are so many layers and levels of belief and devoutness.

I hope that Sarah is enjoying her own quiet life and routines and maybe we will all soon be shocked to find out she is in a relationship and growing into her own!

@NoseyNellie do you think that pastor could go to the Arndt compound?

I am sure AM's cancer diagnosis really shook things up in the family too!

Good Grief, those dresses!  They meet every requirement for female fundy modesty resulting in epic frumpage.

Also, those four women all have the exact same body.  How weird is that?  Are at least two of them sisters?

I studied that picture from the run for so long, trying to find a Maxwell girl. I truly did not recognize her in pants. I was looking for a girl in a long skirt like we used to see them run in. It’s so strange to see!! They really must be having the time of their lives!

Is this school tiny for them to keep showing up on the Facebook page?

*whispers* I don’t think they’re so bad (but I wore similar things to work in the ‘80s, when I was in my 30s, so I’m an Old).

Yes. Only 250 students. Way smaller than my senior high school!

Ethnic groups in Uruguay:

  White (87.7%)

  Black (4.6%)

  Indigenous (2.4%)

  Asian (0.2%)

  Other/none (5.1%)

Most Uruguayans are descended from colonial-era settlers and immigrants from Europe with almost 96% of the population being of either sole or partial European descent, with a majority of these being Spaniards.

Most people in Uruguay are white.

Thanks. I should have said white Americans.

I am quite sure they blend into the population in Montevideo in terms of their appearance.  Spaniards are white.

I’ve always been told that Americans stand out pretty bad in other countries. I can’t help but imagine fundies stand out even more.

What exactly do these missionaries do in Uruguay?

I looked up some info. about Uruguay, I admit I wasn't very familiar with it.

It looks like more than 50% of the country considers themselves Christian (Catholic or other).

It doesn't look like a particularly poor country.  I'm sure it has pockets of poverty in some communities, but it seems it's one of the more economically stable countries in that region.

According to what I read about the Hock's on Facebook, they've been there for 30 years and they say they've planted a church.  Not sure what else they've done, or how they've "helped" anyone.

And this is definitely them too!  at the same meeting, the photo taken from a different viewpoint. I never thought the sisters would be quite so independent of each other so quickly. They are mixing and socialising with both male and female friends, and the bonus of a special  " getting to know you" boy friend  for Mary is what we've wanted for them for years- well done that Pastor if you made this  college experience happen.

And- Mary is showing her knees in the first photo- sitting next to him too- it must be serious!!
