Only the oldest three have needed any real homeschooling so far. They are 9, 7, and 5. I wouldn’t be surprised if David could handle their homeschooling himself while Pris did everything else around the house plus all the childcare of the youngest 3. I imagine he can make his own hours outside of the regular church services.

I do wonder if some of these fundies see homeschooling as wimmen's work though.

Then again....

Honestly, I think Priscilla would be fine with elementary school homeschooling; she reads, I'm sure that she has basic math skills and Fundie science is likely not overly complex. They might also use a computer based program à la Duggar family for middle years and up.

She wouldn't be doing a worse job than Alyssa Bates, that's for sure...

Abeka (which Alyssa uses) is far too liberal for the Wallers. I really wonder what kind of curriculum Prissy uses.

Probably ATI material, which they stopped printing, but the Wallers probably still have.

Yeah, I forgot that TFDW was a higher up in ATI after Gothard was set adrift.

About all their kids need to learn is how to read and then I bet they’re on their own. Pris wouldn’t need to do much of anything with them other than see that a worksheet’s complete.

So many of these fundies ignore the reason some homeschoolers excel academically is because whoever’s homeschooling them works their ass off to give them a well rounded education. They just hear “homeschoolers excel” and pretend like doing next to nothing - but at home - will magically cause their children to test in the top 10%.

Just like so many other things in life, many fundies are so convinced of their own superiority it does occur to them they might be doing it wrong.

Melanie Maxwell ( and I think also Anna Marie) used Abeka. It must be very fundie if they used it.

Fundie homeschooling goal is not academic execelence. They don't even pretend it.  They just want their kids far from "different" people, and to keep mothers at home. Many fundies make it clear that they don't care about college...

The main thing I remember about Abeka (my parents used it with me for a few years — only for a couple subjects, thank goodness) is that their middle school Government text tried to argue that abolishing the death penalty showed a disregard for the sanctity of life.

At the time I talked with some (non-homeschooled) friends about that little tidbit and they were horrified by the mental gymnastics involved in that statement.

The Abeka text was very “if we don’t have the death penalty as a consequence for murder then we are trivializing the lives of the people who are murdered” which… arguing for state-sanctioned murder as a pro-life thing seems to still be a fairly accepted mainstream evangelical thing despite its lack of logic.

So I’d say it’s very fundie, or was in the 1990s. It’s associated with Pensacola Christian School/College in Florida and someone I know who attended PCC said that the college students were required to volunteer a certain number of hours to put Abeka curriculum packets together for shipping and such.

I don’t want to spoil anything and I know this is a VERY random comment, so I will put it in a spoiler.

Do not click until after you have done August 11 Wordle, if you play.

Spoiler

Hehehehehe as soon as I realised I really did laugh out loud. Their legacy will stay with me forever.

It still amuses me to no end that they bought and renovated a former emm " bunny " place.

I even wonder if anyone of them recognized it as such... but then again, hmh maybe it only rings bells when it's blue oyster brand

Could you explain what a former "bunny place " means?

Is it anything to do with the house which hosted "parties" in a gated community in the town where the Wallers live?!

I waited until August 11th, and smugly typed in "Pecan" because of your hint.

....You should have seen me smacking that "Enter" button.

I was wrong, but I did eventually get it.

A little late to the party, but, I think part of Priscilla's issues with the public speaking is also the expected way of expressing yourself. Needing to remember all the buzz words they throw into daily speech to show how special they are. If she's already challenged, needing to throw in specific words instead of basic every day English. Then throw in that stupid whisper singsong way they're expected to speak and I can fully understand her hesitations and sometimes mixed up nonsensical sentences.

Tia Levings is an ex fundamentalist/exvangelical who posts about Fundy life on Instagram as TiaLevingsWriter. "Got up & started over after church-sanctioned domestic abuse. Shining light on the realities of Christian Fundamentalism."  More here if you are interested:  Tia Levings

This post starts out about a pregnancy announcement on Bring up Bates and praising a mother who has four children under the age of four.  She then goes on to discuss Pris and Pecan's video when they've had Infant #2.

On the video, Pris is saying they've been married three years and have never spent a night apart.

Tia noted that women in fundamentalist marriages (never say "No" to your husband) understand that to  mean she's serviced  your husband every night for those three years.  With no birth control, she has two children under three years old and that's just the start of married life, endless sex and childbearing.

Tia had five children before she pulled the plug and got out of fundamentalism and that kind of marriage.

<snip> "The exhaustion ages them rapidly. Priscilla is a perfect case study. An older bride in her twenties, she was still bright and childlike when she innocently married David Waller. This was possibly magnified because she’s long been rumored to have an untreated TBI and developmental delays—she’s truly simple and sweet. By the time she has six kids just a few years later, she’s aged twenty years."

There’s a birth announcement in the Bates’s family (Bringing Up Bates) and another young mom is being praised for her attitude and mothering skills while having baby after baby—she has 4 under 4.

This is the norm in quiverfull families. Women are brought up expecting to forego birth control and remain pregnant and nursing. If there are gaps in the children who line up like organ pipes, it’s an indicator for loss. She wouldn’t be able to tell postpartum depression from morning sickness. Her uterus barely has time to return to normal size. She won’t sleep through the night for a decade or longer. The hardest years are the ones before her oldest child is grown enough to “help.”

I remember. I remember feeling 45 at 25. Praying God would let me catch my breath. We weren’t whole-hog quiverfull; money and violence forced resistance. But I snuck birth control and begged the heavens for rest.

A quiverfull mother is still a human being with physical limitations. Even farmers don’t breed their cows that fast. Andrea Yates is real. Underneath that cheerful attitude lays a layer of truth impossible to escape. It’ll show in her health, her children, her mind—pretty face and all.

Brain washing and abuse all rolled into one. Within a decade, child abuse and neglect enter the picture. Awful, just awful!

I don’t remember anything about a TBI but I know she has talked about having learning troubles when doing homeschooling as a child. And she has always seemed a bit immature for her age.  Because of her past learning troubles, I wouldn’t be surprised if David helped with the homeschooling.

I believe Priscilla was premature and there was talk at one time that she may have had some loss of oxygen at birth.

Tia's instagram is great. She has lots of good content about high control religion and her accounting of her personal experience reveals a lot about the mindset of fundamentalist women.

That video always makes me sad. I wish she had professional help with her reading problems in her childhood. My children are so lucky they have more than one reading intervention specialist at their school. Pris should have had that access.
