As loopy as Steve is, these families are probably a little too blue collar for his princesses. Having a son marry in is one thing- she becomes a MAXWELL! But I cannot see him letting one of the girls hook up with these weirdos, especially as the Bontragers have moved from Attractive Wholesome Singing Family to Crazed Bugged Eyed Trumpsters. Steve Maxwell is very white collar  middle class. He probably voted for Trump but was ashamed to do it - in fact, if he wasn’t, I am sure we would have heard exhortations to encourage acceptance of the Orange Bloat Monster - Steve was only too happy to endorse Huckabee and Cruz.

He be crazy but he is a little too Beaver Cleaver to sacrifice a daughter to anyone not like him.

That’s why I say a Staddon might get past Steve. They very rarely ever post about politics. I don’t think any of them ever posted about trump. They don’t talk about conspiracy theories. They have some similarities to the Maxwells that other fundie families don’t.

The Staddons also have that appropriate middle class ethos that is so very Maxwell. Which one is the oldest, never married with the unfortunate forehead?? Donald?  He would be a match for Sarah.

Even James could be a match for Sarah. He’s younger but plenty of fundies have married older women. They both like photography.

If you read the description of the house it has a   WET BAR  and a MAN CAVE. What do you think Fundies  could get up to there?!

Maybe the wet bar is where they keep the kool-aid?

Scrolling thru the Bontragers blog post, https://bontragerfamilysingers.com/summer-tour-part-two, I tried to count up how many "If You Died Tonight" tshirts this family owns, but I got bored. : )

I wonder if the Bowers printed those tshirts.

They're like the ones Nurthan were photographed wearing recently, although Nurthan's had some scripture on the back. I guess it's the new fundie fad.

I guess it makes them easier to spot in the wild. Although I think I’m pretty good at spotting them in general.

Can anyone explain to me what is up with the recent tax assessments of their McMansion? https://www.zillow.com/homes/655-County-Road-2210,-Troy,-AL-36079_rb/104526291_zpid/?

I haven't researched Alabama specifically, but some state laws require assessment at a percentage of the property value.  Like the assessment is 50% (or 25% or 10%...) then that is multiplied by the tax rate for the tax due.

Personally, I think it's overly complicated but that is the way some places do it.

This is what I noticed. The Bowers bought the place in October 2018 and magically made their taxes shrink: image.png.6beb0abd2c2054f39884bfe6eac40019.png

Looks like AL has a total exemption for disabled people. The memo linked on this page requires doctor’s statements. https://revenue.alabama.gov/property-tax/homestead-exemptions/

I suspect the $199 is a particular portion of the tax rate that con it be exempted.

Did Curtis Bowers take some sort of government handout to get out of paying his fair share?

Doesn't sound like a right wing fundie to me at all.

I’m guessing you said that with thick sarcasm. Because it sounds exactly like a right wing fundie to me. Only they get handouts because they are white straight Christians. But no one else deserves a handout.

Probably they are claiming most of the property as a church.

That's a massive decrease. I can't help wondering if Curtis had politically connected friends.

There are any number of legitimate ways they can do this.  In my state, you can protest the amount of your taxes if you think the amount you are paying is too high.  Lots of people do it routinely. The thinking is that the county assesses too high (assessed value and actual value have little correlation anyway) and protesting will set taxes down to where they should be. However, that wouldn't account for the huge percentage drop.

They could also claim some sort of religious/charitable exemption for a portion of their property. They would have to provide backup for this, but its's the most likely answer.

It's possible they had the property rezoned, but rezoning usually results in a tax increase rather than a decrease.  It's virtually impossible to downzone a property to agricultural (typically the lowest tax rate) once it's been zoned residential or commercial.

That is not as easy in most states than people think it is.  A quick perusal of Alabama law says the property mist be used solely for religious purposes.  On that alone, the property would not qualify.

That said, I've dug deeper via public records and the $199/year figure is wrong.  Actual payments shown snipped below:

Oh, yes. The Maxwells are tRumpers. They just censor themselves & carefully cultivate (what they think is) a very specific image, all designed to sell their wares & make a buck.

I think the Maxwells are more diehard republicans than former guy lovers. I'm sure they voted for him since he was their party's candidate, but he probably wouldn't be their pick versus other republicans. Of course it probably varies a bit among the Maxwell families. I'm sure Chelsy loved him.

So these people are preppers because they fear a socialist invasion from the blue states? Should I tell them that this socialist from Massachusetts can guarantee that they don’t need to worry, or should i be glad that they are wasting money on prepping  rather than giving it to some anti gay, anti choice, pro Trump nonsense? If southerners try to secede again should just let them this time? (Would sure miss you Freejinger southerners though.)

That McMansion is pretty boring except for the hilarious ionic columns in the kitchen.

I truly hate columns in homes. In my brain, columns should go outside, not inside. They look especially strange in the Bowers house.

I think that the Maxwell's are one issue voters. Any candidate that is "pro-life" has their vote. It doesn't matter about any other beliefs.

Back in 2015/2016 they supported Cruz (also an asshole IMHO) and seemed to be rather appalled by tRump, but that changed during his presidency. Eventually the Bontrager men (or at least some of them) took part in the insurrection on January 6.

Bontrager, Bowers, Helferich brothers (at least two)....Mortons, Campanas....Thomas'

Seems to be a connection in believing in a particular kind of god and worshipping an orange master.

The Helferichs? I don't remember that. Which ones?
