If JB sees which way the wind is blowing (which I think he will, because there are lots of nasty things JB is, but stupid isn't one of them) and wants to stop funding the lawyers, that has its own public draw backs.  If JB had never funded them in the first place, that's fine (it would have looked better publicly), but now he's started, stopping will make bad headlines for JB.  JB stops supporting son, JB abandons son, why stop the funding now?  All sorts of nasty public headlines about his hypocrisy. 

It could also lead to retaliation from Josh or even Anna.  Either of them with nothing to lose could go to the press and release more of JBs dirty secrets.  We know JB has them, they may be legal (we don't know that he's broken laws), but he's certainly done scummy things which he wouldn't want the public knowing.  Stopping the funding and cutting Josh and Anna loose has its own very big risks and it may that for him continuing to poor money through the sinking ship, now he's started may be the least bad or a bunch of bad choices.

And if I'm feeling really nice about JB (which I'm not), he may be worried that pissing Anna and Josh off would damage the M kids who likely get a lot of emotional stability from Duggar support systems.  Though I suspect that the M kids are the least of his considerations, one could hope.

JB better be praying 24/7 that none of the other 18 kids realise that the money he earned by selling their childhoods and privacy is vanishing and if he carries on funding Josh, all the will get from the TLC years is infamy. Because then THEY could be the ones threatening to spill secrets to make him stop funding lawyers for the pest.

That would be nice, but I don’t think the motivations, family background would usually come up in a trial. It’s kind of irrelevant. Did he do it? Is it illegal? How illegal? How much time should he get. That’s about it. Unless his defense decides they should be brought up in order to show he was in a cult, and it somehow diminished his capacity to tell right from wrong. But even then — that’s a pretty huge stretch. He’s not a sheltered teenager.

Ok so four of the motions were denied (yay!): 

36- Suppress statements 

38- Suppress photos of hands and feet

39- Appointments clause (the one Emily called novel but didn't think would fly)

40- Claims government failed to preserve evidence 

So that is awesome news, but I don't see anything about motion 37 suppressing the evidence from the search. Anyone know what that means?

I think some of them must realize that they are owed some of the money that is going to Josh’s defense but may not feel that they can go against JB.  We shouldn’t forget that they were raised to revere their father.  There were probably a number of beatings, going without food and family shaming for those who challenged or disobeyed while they were all growing up.  You don’t break away from that easily, especially if you have remained in the cult by marrying someone from a similar family.

There may be family arguments about this, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some indignation about all the money Josh is costing them, but I don’t see them threatening to reveal family secrets.

As far as JB feeling that he has to save face and not “abandon” Josh, his “out” may very well be his other responsibilities.  

For example, Headline:  “With no more income from TLC, Jim Bob Duggar stops funding Josh’s defense.” Report:  “‘We have spent more than what would have been his inheritance when his mother and I died,’ said the reality show patriarch. ‘We have to think of the other 18 children, and we also have to look after Josh and Anna’s children, who are innocent victims of the left-wing conspiracy against their father.’  Explaining that he understood that a public defender might not have as much time to give Josh’s case as another lawyer might, Jim Bob said that he thought Josh’s case should be simple from this point on, and that they were all praying to Jesus in whose hands we all are.”  Or something like that.

I just can't believe how smug they both look. I've tried to understand Anna, but no more "maybe she doesn't understand" or "but she's brainwashed". She just plain f'd up! How could you stand by him smiling? The lawyers needed to get them out a back way or something. Whatever sympathy someone might have had must be gone now. Ugh ugh ugh!

I think she is a complacent, enabling idiot, but she is also very pregnant, her husband is more trouble than he is worth, and she thinks she has to “stay sweet” and smile when most of us would use the pregnancy to hide at home instead of going to stand by him in court.

She is really pathetic.  
 

ETA: I don’t think she is smug.  I think she just doesn’t have any suitable expression for what she is going through. To me, her “smile” looks sort of sick, and Josh’s is surely a borderline, “shit-eating grin.”
