I'll be pedantic again, it's a marriage certificate that proves legal marriage.  You can get a license and never go through with a legal marriage.

I can't help but wonder if there's any jealousy among Gwen's grandkids. Or with Michael and Elle, for that matter. There is clearly a ranking order. Grace is always front and center in photos and performances, with her siblings somewhere nearby. Michael and Elle's twins are usually in the crowd but you often have to look for them. Charles Grantham is the darling boy, always being praised for how spiritual he is. Plus he stands out because of that curly red hair. Oh, and there's poor little Gates who is definitely ranked last. Well, her baby brother is lower, for now anyway. I wonder how all that is explained to them.

“Even on his bed he plots evil…”

Today in the daily "Dramatic Much?", if you ate a snack last night, this quote is about you.

Obedience to God All Hours of the Night and Day

Remember, if you are still struggling with overeating, one huge thing to avoid is getting up in the middle of the night to eat. You have made it through the day with being aware of what you are doing…but in the night, you must not get distracted, lose focus and run to the food. You may want to keep Psalm 36. “Even on his bed he plots evil…”close by as a reminder.  But this cannot be about you controlling. It must be about you surrendering to God. It must be about laying this idol of food down. It is all about laying this love and greed for food down—and gaining a relationship with God! Keep reminding yourself: “I am NOT going back to control and overeating…I’ve got to make some serious, lifetime changes. I’ve got to be a different person. I’m going to surrender all these hours over, including the nighttime hours, to GOD and doing His will.”

Friends, eating is EVIL, and this is how we know Remnant is an eating disorder cult.

Here's the entire psalm in context: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm 36&version=NIV

I haven't paid much attention to the children but is the pecking order you see roughly the order of ages? IIRC Gwen wrote some devotionals that explained how the youngest siblings are under authority of their eldest siblings, all children are under authority of their parents, the wife is under authority of her husband, the bunch of them are under authority of their church elders, and church elders are under authority of God.  This sort of hierarchy is supposed to make you humble and abandon your own selfish attempts to control everything around you, and glory in the divinely ordained control from God something something. Also she wrote bad things about people who find something unfair and complain.  (TL;DR: obey Gwen without questioning her).

Somewhat. It seems Elizabeth's kids all rank above Michael's. Other people may have a different read on this, if they've thought about it, but here's how it looks to me.

  1. Grace
  2. Charles Grantham
  3. Gweneth
  4. Gloria
  5. Gabriele & Garland
  6. Gates
  7. Christian

Been there, done that myself.

I think Gwen and Joe were legally married.  I also think Joe was probably in it for the money, extravagant lifestyle, and expensive toys.

Poor Gates. That’s just a horrible name for a little girl. Plus she seems to be completely forgotten most of the time. I know they wanted hard g names with an a after but there are better choices. What’s wrong with Gayle? It’s way prettier than Gates.

Switching gears:  I watched the video by the guy with the NTSB preliminary report.....All I can say is WTF?????  That flight seemed to be doomed once the gas tanks were filled on the plane and the luggage was loaded.  Is there any flight inspection before a plane takes off or is it just a flying free for all up in the clouds on non-commercial flights???

Most people take care of safety concerns because of their vested self-interest in surviving the flight.  But there are those who let their arrogance get in the way.

It's explained away as the line of authority. This is a strong remnant teaching. Within the family unit Father -> Mother -> Eldest kid -> on down. If kids are all playing together you are expected to respect that line of authority even amongst your peers.

Also I couldn't find the post easily but there was comment of RF members being told to get their wills in order to make sure they had clear instructions of who would have custody of children. From my experience I do know of some families who would put in their wills that guardianship would go to older siblings (who were in Remnant) vs grandparents who were not or even non-family members (who were in Remnant) over non-Remnant families.

Please know, while ex members may have bad experiences with certain people and leaders, I don't think anyone here is saying that everyone in RF is a bad person by any means. We have met wonderful friends and I think our family who are in are wonderful people who are being spiritually and physically mislead by a theologically uneducated false "prophet." You WILL meet kind, loving, and fun people in RF. It doesn't mean that the theology isn't damaging or that the teaching about food doesn't often lead to eating disorders.

It's BECAUSE these are good people that I want them OUT.

Yes, I understand.  I just want to clarify that the comment I made was more on my behalf and I wasn't making a comment about anything to do with this forum or the people that comment here.  I read about different cult groups, but this is the first one I have known people in and so it is different for me.  I thought when I went there, the people would come across like Gwen did to me, obviously out there.  But, I was surprised at how many of them were lovely people.  Hopefully, the church will move in a healthier direction.

I wonder how many from RF made it to the Trump rally yesterday in Wellington OH.  I think it's closer than FL.

Until you mentioned that Gates is a girl , I am sorry to say that I had thought she was a boy . According to these websites , on baby names , Gates is a boy's name .   https://babynames.com/name/Gates , https://www.babycenter.com/baby-names-gates-516735.htm , https://nameberry.com/babyname/Gates .  This is the only one that has it as a girl's name .  https://www.babynamespedia.com/meaning/Gates

Gates is a surname which to me makes it unisex. It's not a name I would chose, but people have been using surnames as first names for ever. Calvin, for example, started as a first name, because people named child after John Calvin (1509-1564).

Gwen's granddaughters all have G names and her grandsons have C names. I'm not the biggest fan of letter themes, but this one seems imposed on the parents since both Elizabeth and Michael followed it.

I mean, Butts is also a last name. Doesn’t make it a good first name.

Just because not every last name is usable, doesn't make all last names as first names bad. I don't think names are necessarily bad, because they started out as surnames. I raised Catholic and there was tendency to be snobby about people's names. I'm trying to overcome that.

I didn’t say all last names are bad. But some are. Just because a name is a last name doesn’t mean it’s going to work as a first name. My example was Butts. I also don’t think Spurgeon works well for a first name. Some last names are better as last names and not first names.

To my bolding, this will only work if the siblings are over 18 and if the oldest child is still young (college age) a judge still may not grant guardianship to that person because of means and maturity. I don't think a judge would allow for under 18 as guardian. People under 18 can't legally sign a contract (unless legally emancipated which uncommon).

Yes! That's what I meant. There were big families so there were often older siblings that were already legal adults. Not sure how it would hold up in a court, but that was what I remember hearing.

Actor Gates McFadden of Star Trek: Some Vintage Or Other is a beautiful woman and who came to mind when Gates Shamblin’s existence came to my attention.  Thus it seems a fine enough girl’s name to my old aural receptors.

Her full name is Cheryl Gates McFadden. She just used the stage name Gates McFadden.

I found some others, though it's definitely not popular as a girl's name.

As far as suitability goes, I've observed that an odd name can work if the bearer is attractive, either physically or in personality. If our little Gates grows up to be beautiful and/or charming, we may think it's a great name. If she grows up to be obnoxious and unkempt, we'll likely not care for it.

Huh! Did not know. It has a lot more marquee punch to me than Cheryl McFadden, but mileages vary.
That's one of the few drawbacks to being Eastern European. Not a lot of our surnames work well as given names, at least IMHO. Not like Anglo names.

I mean, a baby named Pulaski McFadden in honor of an ancestral family? Or Schnuck Smith? Works for a bank (first one) and a grocery chain (second), but as given names?  Prolllllly not. And all my apologies if somebody out there is named, knows and loves someone named, or gave a beloved child the first names Pulaski or Schnuck!  But hey: It’s only IMHO! Anything goes! :D
