Jinger 56: Oh My Stars It's a Reality Show Book! How Surprising - Not

I believe that JimBob finally decided to allow Jeremy to court Jinger because of the way he could help with ratings..... Jeremy is media savvy, speaks and  presents well on camera and even has a story of sin and repentance.   He had a career in professional sports, graduated college, is the son of a preacher, his Mom has a prison related charity, so  there were lots of potential story lines for the show.

I don’t think it was really about theology, it was JimBob assessing the risk of him being more mature and independent versus his willingness to participate in the family business.  He probably rightly thought that Jeremy loved being on camera more than making waves.

Now, all bets are off, JinJer were the first to denouce Josh when the latest news came out.  Child sexual abuse porn does not fit in with their curated image.  They are going about their business of promoting their book as of Josh does not exist.  I feel sorry for Jinger and her sisters having this all opened up again.  They also have another confirmation that what their brother Josh did was perverted and not something that they should just forgive and forget.

His mum does seem very nice and is no doubt talented. I keep thinking of Jeremy as like Lady Catherine in Pride and Prejudice’ had I learned to play piano, I would have been excellent’

Right? Him emailing his entire school to say he is a Christian is the most Jeremy thing I’ve read in this book

OMG, guys, this excerpt from the book on Jeremy's insta is killing me - could he be more pretentious if he tried? 🤣🤣🤣

Parental support/approval is huge to some people. Just because you don't think it's not a valid reason doesn't mean it wouldn't be to someone else. I'm mid thirties and I still appreciate my parents' approval on my actions. I've gotten to the point where I'll still do something I want, even if they disagree, but I feel guilty. Growing up being taught complete submission and obedience will do this to a person.

Are you me? This is and has been like 100% my experience. I grew up pretty differently than the Duggars or other fundies, but I feel Jinger on this one.

Not fundie either, but same here! I had just moved into my own apartment and was in a store one day and noticed a house plant I liked. I left the store without it because in my mind, I had to check with my mom to see if she thought it was a good idea. A house plant! I was 24! I did go back and buy it but then called my mom to apologetically let her know I now owned a plant. In her defense, my mom’s response was “Oh, nice. Enjoy your plant”, but I was raised to always put other people first and to make other people happy. I didn’t need to personally be happy. If other people were then that should be good enough. I spent years looking for outside validation. Am I doing it (whatever “it” was) right? Am I good enough? How do I ride the fence/stay invisible/not make waves. I’m just past 50 now, and it’s only been the last 5 years maybe that I got my shit together, and it’s been great, but a lot of damage has been done that I would give anything to undo.

Jinger has so many more obstacles than I ever did, but I hope that if she isn’t in a life she wants, she is able to break out and discover one.

I think the timing isn’t quite right, but maybe when Jinger and Jeremy were pre-courting, Derick was already starting to express his feelings about the Duggar ways and the rift was starting to begin between the Duggars and the Dillards. Maybe the idea that marriage would cause an emotional distance between Jinger and her parents was something she didn’t want to deal with. So maybe Jeremy needed to convince Jinger that he would never come between her and her parents like Derick did with Jill.

@AnywhereButHere I totally get this! I freeze up when my parents express disapproval of my choices and spent a winter wearing boots that were no longer warm because my mom didn’t want me to buy new ones and spent hours lecturing me on how irresponsible I was with money. I still get stammery when she goes off at me about a decision. I am better able to defend my decisions when it comes to my daughter and the fact that I won’t put her in torn, worn out clothing. I hate that I had to wear that growing up and that even in baby pictures I’m in hand-me-down sleepers that were missing snaps, had broken zippers, were pilled or had holes in them. No way that I’m doing that to my kid.

Fun fact from the book: during the period when they were famous for tater tot casserole, lots of people were inviting themselves over and wanted to try it. Jinger got so sick of it that she found it nauseating.

I feel for you. My mom - born into a poor, devout Catholic family in 1925, for reference - had so little self-esteem throughout her life. Her worried refrain, upon considering anything  slightly outside Generally Approved Behavior was, “But what will they say when they find out?”

My siblings & I developed a frustrated response: “Mom! Who are ‘they’ and why should they matter?”

I’m not sure it helped her but it did seem to help us. Messes we may be (even the one who’s passed on, rest their soul); but we eventually learned not to give a fig!

Jinger’s anecdote about her decision to wear pants is another example of her being mindful of parental approval. (This this book kind of validates some things we suspected/knew, but she explicitly says it). She does not want to upset them even though her own convictions have changed.

Studying the Bible with Jeremy made her more aware of the different interpretations Christians have of the text, and this caused her to re-evaluate her taken-for-granted standards. Like Jill, she benefits from marrying someone with a different perspective.

Jeremy’s response  would probably be different if Jinger’s study lent her to endorse something beyond his interpretation, but in this case he just praises her engagement

Jeremy was also older than Ben by at least a decade with far more "worldly" experience. With the "I went away to college and turned into a sinning sinner" testimony to prove it. JB isn't dumb and would have recognized Jeremy as not being impressionable and malleable to anywhere the extent Ben was.

This is why their relationship is curious to me. I get it from Bens side. Jeremy, at first glance, seems like a cool guy. But why was Jeremy hanging out with 20 year old Ben when he was 30?

Jeremy talks about their friendship quite a bit in their new book. He doesn’t mention the age difference, so it seems like it didn’t matter to him. From the outside, I would say that Ben was married and about to be a father, while Jeremy was single and new to ministry. It’s like they averaged out at about 25. As for why Jeremy liked Ben, it sounds like they really enjoy discussing theology.

It'll be something like a stream of them reading a chapter of their book, or a (carefully selected) promotional Q &A.

I bet they are relaunching their merchandise range, hoping the publicity from the book will ensure more interest. You can be sure it’s something that lines their pockets.

According to Duggar Data, she read their book. In the book, they say they intentionally waited to have a year to have a child. Here's a link to her post.

Guess that settles the debate we had. I was team ‘they waited intentionally’. Also, this supports many of ours theory that their quiver will be small by fundie standards.

I go back and forth on this. Even if it was all a publicist, they released a statement against josh. Yes it was vague but these things always are. Why should they stop their lives over that creep. Even if it’s manipulation for attention. Idk.

I am NOT a JV/JV fan. But I have to respect that their statement mentioned secular law enforcement.

That makes complete sense.  Her parents are the only security she has ever had.  Severing the relationship was more than she could bear.

The Vuolos are in a predicament. Despite Jeremy’s lofty aspirations they don’t really have an established income that can finance the sort of lifestyle they appear to crave. What celebrity they do have comes firmly from the association with the Duggar brand- the TV show is the reason anyone knows who they are and is the reason Jinger has a large SM following ( not Jeremy’s bow ties, fountain pens or views on coffee, burgers or running shoes).

I doubt Jinger is going to cut ties with her mother- she seems to have a very deep relationship with her. However if the show is cancelled and option turns against JB and M as not only enablers but also using the family’s TV money to bankroll a very expensive defence to horrific allegations that appear to have a good evidential base, where does that leave these two?
Im sure Jeremy thinks they could carry off their own show ( he doesn’t appear aware of how dull he is) - but to do that they would have to distance themselves from Duggardom.

Maybe they’ll do a sabbatical ‘mission’ abroad and try and get someone to finance and film it? It won’t be anywhere remote or uncomfortable- I can see it being Europe in fact. Hopefully not England as it’s a small country and I don’t want to run into them!

I don't see how could they fit in Europe. Evangelism is not popular here. There are evangelist groups for sure, but (at least in Spain) they are far from "posh". US missionaries walk the streets giving tracts, but they don't seem to succeed. When I see them, which is not often, I always think they are on vacation. I doubt any church has money enough to pay Jeremy for a year, and in most countries it makes no sense to have a English-speaker preacher.

@Melissa1977 I am often surprised at how many American evangelists I run into in England without trying! Some are street preachers but there’s a few trying to set up/plant churches here. I agree someone would have to bankroll the Vuolos now they have had a taste of luxury living in California.

I survived ... Ish. I'm all moved again, another 1500 miles from where the cats and I were living before. I'm in the new apartment, and kitties are adjusting well. I've only cried 6 times since Saturday! #progress.
By the way, sorry about the summer logo swap taking its sweet time. Real life was a little too much and it got forgotten.

A happy summer solstice to all northern hemisphere FJers! And a happy winter solstice to all southern hemisphere FJers! (I know it's already Monday is Australia, so I'm late for most of you.)

ETA--Oh! I just checked, and the winter solstice is at 1:31 PM on Monday, June 21 in Eastern Australia Time. So, for once the time zones worked in my favor. I'm not late!

My grandmother came from a town in Missouri of (now) population ~14,500 and 8 Baptist churches.  Not counting all the other denominations, that's just the Baptists.
MY grandfather came from Drimoleauge, Ireland which has a current population of ~450 people (not a typo) and 1 church and 5 pubs.
If I get a time machine take a wild guess which ancestors I'm going back to visit?  I'm not social, don't enjoy bars, and prefer to imbibe at home but sitting in a pub has to be better than being Godbothered to death by people pretending they don't drink.
Fun unrelated fact - Martin Luther spent so much time on the toilet he had a desk built so he could work there, and would take meetings while actively pooping.   He also wrote letters to people with vivid descriptions of his poops.   That should make everyone feel a little better about their work place and emails.
