Royal Family of Sweden

They most likely already did to get Prince Hisahito. There was a movement gathering strength to change the succession so Princess Aiko could become empress and all of a sudden 40 year old Princess Kiko who had not had a baby in 12 years gets pregnant and gives birth to a male... the first male in family in well over 40 year.  No need for discussion or legislation now!

Hmm...

That is highly suspicious, lol.

Princess Aiko has either been completely cheated or had a very lucky escape. And the succession is still precarious. All it takes is for Hisahito or his future wife to have fertility issues, or his future spouse not to be a wife, and they’re in a worse position than now. Princesses leave the imperial family when they marry. As Hisahito is the youngest by some years, by the time it would be clear that he would not be able to continue the succession the remaining princesses would have either married and left or be past childbearing age.

I was doing some research on this a few weeks ago and it turns out that the current situation is partly the US’s fault. After WWII the US, as the victorious power, limited the succession to the descendants of then-Emperor Hirohito’s father. A number of cadet branches were disinherited, some of which are still extant. One of the proposals for reform that was being discussed prior to Hisahito’s timely(!) arrival was to allow members of the cadet branches to be adopted into the current imperial family thus avoiding the horrors of a female inheriting.

Yeah, they definitely need to change things. My understanding is that the organization that runs the imperial household, and has major political connections, is very, very resistant to change. The imperial family don't have a ton of say over who is in that organization, so their voices don't always get heard.

Which is sad, and also ironic since they emperor is otherwise so reverred and genuinely believed to be descended from the gods.

Out of curiosity, how does CG treat his children and grandchildren differently? I have always heard he did, but never heard specifics.

The most recent off the top of my head is that he gave the “best” duchys to CP’s children.

To be fair I don’t know about that. Of course the duchy thing is purely ceremonial and traditional and the named dukes and duchess get nothing out of it. I think it’s whichever area has not been used recently.

What do you mean by best duchies? Like, the older ones or bigger ones?

You are thinking too much. It’s just tradition like all titles. The Duke or Duchess of Chumba wumba is no different from the Duke or Duchess of Hooterville and they  get no material benefits from them.

I'm not thinking anything, just reporting on what I've read. I don't know anything about Sweden and the duchys.

  • 4 months later...

They like to to do fun things for children. Princess Madeline got dressed up in ball gown and real tiara to host little girls at a castle tea party a few years ago.

The baptism, (or maybe Christening is the right word?) today of Prince Julian, Duke of Halland. I hope I can put all pics under a spoiler

Not much to say, Julian is cute as are the other children. Princess Adrienne is adorable with her curly hair 🙂

Prince Julian got christened today. I am amazed how much he resembles his cousin Estelle at the moment. Could almost be the same child. I love the flowers and Sofia‘s dress (the strange headband? not so much) and colourful heels would have been a nice contrast.
