This is pretty standard for public statements when people are arrested and charged. I think they're distancing themselves from Josh but also not proclaiming guilt as he has not yet been convicted.

I think the "we hope the truth comes to light" (and other similar statements) are the Duggars basically saying they're not defending or condoning any of Josh's actions publicly. He's on his own.

to me the „We are especially heartbroken by the reality that there are children in the world being harmed and exploited." part reads as if they at least subconsciously want to put the focus more on those producing CP than Josh consuming it. or am i reading too much into that particular phrase? long time lurker and first time snarker here...

Many fundies are very big on talking about child exploitation and trafficking. They just think it’s liberal elites that do it all. I don’t accept that any of this family didn’t realise it goes on. They just didn’t think someone like them would get caught being involved in it.

Am I the only one thinking that the "we hope the truth comes to light" is actually "we know he's innocent and soon you will too"? I wish I was wrong, I just can't shake the feeling they are all behind him.

No, I think it’s “I’m sick of having to tolerate the asshole brother who molested me, and soon everyone will know how horrible he is, and that will be a huge relief.”

Joy did a post on Sunday too. Here it is:

Joy said something like, my pastor asked, "What do you love more than Jesus? This earthly person? That one? The other? This earthly thing? That one?"

Ummm, All of the above?

Because I assume Jesus is a benevolent deity and not a self-worshiping brat. He wants you to make your earth a better place, not drop all your responsibilities to fawn over Him?

I mean, I don't know what Joy and Austin specifically meant by their statement, but for myself I will forever credit Josh Duggar for being the reason I know that video of the 18m baby exists. It's really bothered me, as I have a 12m old baby girl myself as a visual and I just...my husband and I keep randomly saying to each other that we can't believe someone would want to do that to a literal baby. I think it's one thing to know that people want to hurt children sexually and being confronted with an actual absolutely horrifying example. I personally would like to bleach that knowledge from my brain. Like Men in Black memory zap myself from retaining that information, but alas.

I unfortunately think that Joy has been conditioned from such a young age to forgive and forget and that she is probably being told to apply it to this situation. It’s hard to change your coping mechanism when you only have been taught one way. (Although I will say that her and Austin seemed to handle their stillbirth in a seemingly healthy way). I hope that she is able to acknowledge whatever she may be feeling right now, but I’m sure JB is trying to control the narrative behind the scenes.

The 'I pray you put this journal away' podcast was really interesting in giving insight into the cult's approach to sin and forgiveness. Men would 'stumble' by beating their wives or looking at pornography and would have to stand up in front of the church body to admit their sin, and their wives would stand beside them demonstrating their instant forgiveness. Women were not allowed to demonstrate any judgement of the actions of the men. Forgiveness had to be automatic and heartfelt.

I’ll have to check it out-thanks. I’ll never understand how their culture preaches that seeing shoulders can cause men to “stumble” yet they are the uncontested leaders of their home. Almost every aspect of their religion caters to men.  I can’t imagine being abused by my husband and then having to forgive him immediately and publicly.

The podcast (by an ex-IBLP, Duggar church member and friend of Josh)  said that it was almost a point of pride to have stumbled. It meant that they were so crucial to Jesus and the church that Satan had targeted them.

I have no words for the level of delusion they so carefully orchestrate.  Lovely little house of cards you've built there, Gothard.

That's what always gets me. Men are so pathetically weak that it's up to women to keep them from sinfulness (lustful thoughts, adultery, etc), and somehow this qualifies them to be the head of the family?

I listened to the first episode of the podcast.  One thing that struck me is the dude (I forget his name) said that their church often had no live sermon,  but they'd pop in a videotape of a sermon,  like from Bill Gothard?? That's bizarre.   It's like the church version of Alyssa Bates' homeschool.

This is what my cult did. I live in Canada but “headquarters” were in California. We would have live preaching from men in my cult on Sunday mornings, Wednesday and Thursday evenings but Saturdays and Sunday afternoon we’d have to listen to recorded tapes from our leader in California.

I think it’s quite common in extended cults. You want to make sure the members remember who is in charge, especially if they don’t live near you.

That made me laugh so so hard.

Joy posted an IG story of picking up their "favorite" pizza, Dominos, and then discussed it vs Papa John's as which is best.  Austin voted Dominos since for $7.99 they get a large pizza that can feed the whole family.  This hurts my NY heart (stomach really).   NOOOO!  NOOO! Now I need to watch that old Jon Stewart clip.

That is one of my favorite clips ever!

At the risk of being exiled out of the Chicago area for typing this, I am a NY style pizza girl and this hurts my heart as well!

My Chicago heart too! My best friend loves Dominos.  Papa John's is horrible.

One of our friends is from Chicago, and a safe topic of debate (politics and religion are a serious no-go) is NY vs Chicago pizza. Although, I don't know how safe it is. Chicagoans and NYers can get pretty heated about their pizza! The last "discussion" ended with NY pizza being crunchy cardboard with cheese and Chicago pizza not being pizza at all but rather pizzagna. I just sat back and watched the show, chowing on all the pizza, because I'm from Massachusetts and have no dog in this fight. ?

I know that debate well and have actually had people get angry at me for being a "Chicagoan" (burbs, but still) who hands down prefers NY pizza.

But what a lot of the public debates get wrong is that deep dish is what Chicago thinks of as pizza.  It's not.  It's a thing here and people like it, but when you say you're getting a pizza the default is the regular flat pizza.  Deep dish is it's own deal.

But regular flat pizza is different.  NY it's generally in the big triangles not the grid squares, the sauce is better (Chicago sauce tends to be sweeter which I don't love) and the crust is so much better and I can't explain why.

But yeah - if word gets out I prefer NY pizza and that I put ketchup on my hot dogs (or did when I used to eat them) there would be a moving truck at my house in 15 minutes demanding I leave the area immediately.

I feel very strongly that Chicago Pizza, NY Pizza, St Louis pizza and chain pizza (like Domino's/Pizza Hut/Papa John's) are each totally different food groups on their own.  To me answering the question of "What do you want for dinner" with "Pizza" is like saying "Hot food" ? If I'm hungry for Chicago deep dish but the only option is St Louis pizza-on-a-cracker I may as well just get Chinese food

ETA: Papa John's is gross

This! I often say pizza is it’s only category. Sometimes I want fancy brick oven pizza, sometimes I want pizza from the local place with the thick cheese and other times I want greasy chains pizza. Pizza Pizza used to be my post-drinking food.

Here in Argentina people eat pizza with a fork, it's weird to me but I'm not from here. The pizza here is thick and basic, not my favorite, I'd rather have Domino's. Here, there's no Domino's, Pizza Hut or Papa John's because Argentinians are too into their kind of pizza; as of right now it's starting to get popular the NY Pizza and Sbarro just opened and some restaurants with NY Pizza, my personal favorite.

Anyway, I love this discussion because pizza is my jam and I suffer in this country, lol.

I love Sbarro so much!  Here is only available in malls or highway rest stops, but it's my favorite.
