Mills 18: Marrying Off Maggie Mae to Tom So the Kids Eat A Vegetable

Tom engaged with someone in the comments of his late night live chat video who said they would never have more kids than they can afford. I find it interesting that Tom is arguing back with them and leaving all the comments, seeing as he is majorly losing the battle for likes. She is getting way more likes than his comments, which goes to show you all the opinions out there that Tom censors. I'll put the screenshots in spoilers if I can figure this out lol.

He's also likening "being dead" to choosing to limit the number of children one has, which just shows what a terrible debater he is. I'm sure he left this public so that people could back him up and watch him own a troll, but it backfired.

Does he not know what a condom is for? No one dies when you use a barrier form of contraception. Not being born isn't the same as being dead. He's a master (de) bate r all right. Probably should crack a book instead of the porn.

You know how Tom has his big TV on the wall across from the $4,000K couch?  And you know how it usually is set to scroll through their pictures?  Well tonight at the 41 minutes 30 second mark, the video panned to the TV and their was a picture of a woman hugging some of the kids.  And I swear she looked just like Sarah Maxwell!

I'm probably sure it's not her, but wouldn't that be something!  Except that Sarah isn't too interested in kids or cooking.

Hmmm.... Sarah has been MIA from the Maxwell blog lately, so......

But seriously, I am sure it isn't her but boy oh boy that would sure be a plot twist!

Who is Sarah Maxwell?

She is the oldest daughter of Teri and the uber-controlling Steve Maxwell, who were (are?) well known in some fundamentalist circles for their books, like Managers of Their Homes, and their chorepack system. FJ discusses the Maxwells here:

https://www.freejinger.org/forum/260-maxhell/

Here's Sarah's entry in the summary thread (including her picture):

To add to @WhatWouldJohnCrichtonDo? said, Sarah Maxwell is a 38(ish) year old stay at home daughter. Her days are spent dusting ceiling fans and writing children's books based on her very dull and uneventful childhood.

The Maxwells don't believe in allowing children to have imagination, teens aren't allowed to waste time reading, and the entire family wakes up at 4:30 so they can do something called "Bible Time" together at 5. Every morning, even on vacation. For the past 30 years or so. If they decide to hike on their vacation, they do bible time even earlier so they can get to the trail head early and pass judgement on people who aren't awake yet.

Fun is a four letter word in the Maxwell House, other than the two weeks a year they go to Colorado.

Thank you both. My eyes glazed over at "chore pack" I pulled them back into focus. Sounds like a horrendous existence. What is wrong with people? Children with no imagination? No reading? Sounds positively North Korean.

The Maxwells are also fairly affluent and practice good hygiene and nutrition, even if their meals are boring. Sarah Maxwell would be positively miserable in the Mills filthy shack. I think she used to escape the noise of her younger siblings by hanging out in the bus with her laptop, working on her books.

They also all exercise regularly and go for runs together.

I truly don't even understand the people who even give this guy an ounce of attention. He's got the maturity of a middle school child and he gets into back and forths with people becasue he is the be all and know all of everything. He relishes in drama and debate. If he's so smart why are other people supporting him?

People going crazy wondering if he has a girlfriend? Who cares?

He has himself convinced it is HIM that is taking care of his kids when in reality it is the subscribers.

His tee shirt the other day said  "I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you".

He's so smug and full of himself. He teaches his kids to look down on others too, he's always telling the boys how everyone else is so dumb and he is so smart. He knows how to make people do what he wants just by saying something.

What happened to Christian Godly values?? I never saw someone be so greedy and boastful as he. If he thinks that is Christian behavior he better go read his Bible again.

Tom probably does have the financial ability to take care of the kids' basic needs.  If he doesn't, the government will assist him. He chooses not to provide his children with their basic needs.

Tom's an asshole. He had his, "My homeschool kid will be your honor student's boss" t-shirt on yesterday's live. I'm pretty sure he's just trying to start shit with that or he's delusional.

He wants people to challenge him on that so he can throw statistics at them about how much more successful homeschooled kids are than non-homeschooled. He thinks anyone challenging HIS homeschooling is challenging all homeschooling. But you don't get to be part of good statistics by default, you have to put work into homeschooling your kids if you want them to succeed.

OK, Tom, maybe if Thomas stays in that grocery store as a manager for the rest of his life he'll be high school honor students' boss, but guess what? There are homeschoolers whose parents took an active role in their children's educations and those homeschooled kids will be be YOUR children's boss.

His shirts are old, but he did mention that he might turn them into his merch and maybe a few more sayings. At least if people buy this stuff we'll all know who to avoid out in public.

What is the point of having so many kids if you can't take care of them? He can't take care of them physically or financially. No bedtime teeth brushing, rarely do they get home cooked meals, no bedtime stories, no sports, no showers, a dirty house that is falling apart, poor schooling, basically no education at all. Mt. Dew for all the kids even the toddler. You can't get much worse than that unless he were physically abusing them.

Tom said recently in one of the lives that Claudia was doing well in school, but is having trouble with recognizing lowercase and uppercase letters. She will be six in August, to me she is pretty far behind if she can't recognize the difference between capital and lowercase letters. All of the children in my son's public school kindergarten know their alphabet. For reference, my kid is reading in kindergarten and most of his classmates are as well.

Some kids struggle to learn to read and that is fine, but don't sell me that your homeschooling is superior to all public schools.

I forgot to add, his only concern is that he needs alone time with another woman. That's his biggest priority at the moment.

I found a new channel. called Just a Different Life. Its another homeschooling family that adopted 7 children with disabilities. They're all siblings that were in foster care. I'm not saying the family i s perfect of anything, but you can really see a difference between that family and the Mills. These kids with all of their challenges are fed properly, look clean, participate in meaningful activities, can answer questions (they all have various levels of intellectual disabilities) and Tom can't master even one of these areas. He really needs to stop focusing on his love life and take care of his family.

I have a bad feeling about these kids. I think Grandma Kitty needs to tell Tom to put the youngest kids in school. If she wanted to, she could help Thomas, Asher, and Judah study for the ACTs or SATs and get them enrolled in the local community college and let them find a trade or a transfer program.

I really don't mean this unkindly towards Thomas, Asher, Judah, or any of the children, but I think expecting them to take the ACT/SAT or enroll in community college after a bit of studying with Kitty is hugely optimistic. I think it would be more realistic for her (or anyone) to help them with basic life skills, like personal hygiene, basic literacy, how to make change, household management like simple cooking and how to do laundry. I think they're far enough behind academically that it's going to take a lot more than a few weeks' intervention from a long-retired teacher to get them caught up, and even with intensive help from a dedicated team of educators, it might not happen for all of them. They'd have to be really motivated. I don't think community college or the SAT is even within the scope of what they need to learn right now. It's difficult to wrap one's mind around that, though.

It's really terrible the disservice Tom and Andrea have done their kids. I just finished the book Educated, and I think there's a parallel to be drawn between Tara Westover and the Mills children. I think that the key difference for Tara was that she was incredibly motivated in addition to having innate intelligence. She also knew pretty early in life that she rejected her parents' worldview, and it didn't seem like her dad was constantly inundating her with suggestions that she was academically ahead of her peers simply because she was homeschooled. I think in the case of the Mills kids, the first obstacle is going to be convincing them that they need remediation at all.

"Growing god's kingdom one heart at a time." I think that's literally the answer. The more kids they had, the more humans were in the world that they could indoctrinate with their specific brand of christianity. I think Tom has even said this one time. Not that it was the reason they had so many kids, but more like "how great is it that I can teach them exactly what I believe" or something along those lines. What a fucking awful reason to have kids.

Sorry for stupid question, but... What happened to April? I watched for a while when she was Tom's "girlfriend", saw her at their house and shopping with him, then I forgot about the Mills for a few month and when I came back there was no sign of her anywhere.

It's not. I honestly think that Tom believes that people find it "charming" and "cute" to see how "hilariously incompetent" he is.  I think he may actually be putting it on in a bid for someone to "rescue" him.

I agree with you 100%. He’s no different from women who think acting like an incompetent damsel in distress is the best (or only!) way to get a “good” man.

I've been away since about 10 PM on Monday evening.  My husband noticed that my speech was a bit slurred, called my daughter to see if she concurred and they both agreed that I needed to go to the hospital.  There I was taken back within minutes to be evaluated for a stroke.   My BP was sky-high. I. undressed and was helped into a hospital gown.  The PureWick did not work that night so when I had to go I just went.  (I do want a PureWick if I ever get urinary stress incontenence though and would need to wear diapers.).
I had a CT scan fairly early the next morning and it confirmed that I'd sufffered a mild stroke,  I had an MRI that afternoon which confirmed the both the mild stroke and no other damage and yet I had another CT scan -this time with a contrast medium injected.  I was allowed the Heart Healthy diet and my BP had dropped to 180/100.  They don'y want to drop the BP too rapidly so it has dropped enough to turn to Lisinipril to drop it further.
After the ER. I was sent to the ICU and stayed until I was discharged this afternoon.  The staff were all really nice and my husband and two daughters were with me most of the time, helping out.  My oldest daughter's van was in the shop so I let her borrow the MINI since I knew she could drive a stick.  When she was visiting yesterday afternoon, her husband was in the ER waiting on a CT can and today, she was there when the speech pathologist was visiting.  She was able to get some good advice from her as her husband is currently unable to swallow.
Anyway I'm home.  My dogs and the cat to see me home, especially my dachsie, were happy to see me home.
A couple of things I learned:
I need to teach my husband about loading the dishwasher.
      and
Jill would never be able to handle bedpans.
