Michaela & Brandon 6: She Is an LPN and He Is Boring.....

Too bad Jill Duggar wasn’t born into the Bateses family. Maybe she would have had the opportunity to become a nurse too. I hope she pursues that dream, if she wishes. Michaela is married and educated. Not sure she is working, while her friend Jana is uneducated, seemingly barely employed (TLC)and living in the girls’ room. I see this as wasted potential-

Did anyone else catch her instagram story Q&A? Very boring questions, very boring and predictable perfect answers including how great her mom is for homeschooling them. I wonder what she thinks of her more worldly siblings...

She did say that if she and Brandon hadn’t agreed at the beginning of her relationship to save their first kiss on their wedding day, she was sure she would have kissed him all the time before the wedding. She said it was very hard not to kiss him. I bet she’s ok with her siblings kissing before the wedding since she recognizes how hard it was for her.

Has anyone asked jill on a Q and A about whether or not she plans to go to school, pursue nursing, etc?

Not that I remember. One person asked Derick if he would support Jill having a career and he said, “yes.”

From what we’ve seen of Derick in recent years I can’t imagine he’d be anything but encouraging if Jill wanted to pursue education and a career.

I think it’s great that Michael had a great experience being home schooled. Maybe for her she got a better education because her mom didn’t have as many kids when she started. I don’t see how Kelly could have done a great job at teaching when she had a baby every few years. That takes a tole on a person and it takes time away from other things. My mom only homeschooled three kids and my education sucked. She spent all of her energy fighting with my older brother.

I wish one of these Bates or Duggars would answer something juicy on Q & A -- like if they have/will get the Covid vaccine. I don't think they ever would answer (or get it for that matter) but I am quite curious.

Assuming they started when michaela was 5, she already had 1 elder sibling, 4 younger siblings and a pregnant mother. There have never existed a quiet time for the Bates family.

Katie wanted to be a nurse, but wasn't allowed. Bates are slightly better than Duggars in the educational field (most of the girls have degrees... but except Michaela's, all the degrees are from Crown College).  Jill Duggar wouldn't have been a nurse if born Bates, except if she were infertile and needed a goal out of motherhood.

I’m pretty much positive they’ve had this question but refuse to answer. Because they know they will get pushback.

I think she had a great experience being homeschooled because she was academically inclined, loved books and learning on her own. She probably would have had a great experience in an actual school too. But the thing is not evey child is like that and we can see that homeschooling hasnt worked that great for some of her siblings like for example Alyssa or Carlin.

I am quite sure you are right. I wonder if there are any expectations on Michaela to get it / take extra precautions in terms of anything she does with nursing.

I think some of the siblings have talked about how inquisitive Michaela is/was about anything. Erin joked about her reading the encyclopedia. I think the difference between Michaela and most of her siblings is that she wants to know things and researches the answers. For example, Carlin, Alyssa, Tori, etc. go to the zoo with their kids and take pics. Whether it is because of lack of interest or responsibilities of motherhood, they don't read the signs or learn about the animals. Trusting that the show is correct, Brandon and Michaela had memberships to the zoo in Chicago and went often.

Second, Michaela seems more internally motivated. Even with Kelly Jo taking advantage, Michaela seemed to be one who didn't need someone assigning her a chore or assignment. I would assume that Kelly Jo probably gave her a school assignment and went on with her day and other kids. Unlike some who would get distracted or procrastinate, Michaela probably did the assignment without delay.

Combined, I think Michaela is probably a great example of a child who would thrive in homeschooling (or traditional) environments. She doesn't seem to expect the coddling and attention that some of her siblings thrive on and need.

If this is true, which it seems like it is, she may have asked for extra assignments or books to read. She may also have asked permission to learn other things that weren’t assigned. I got bored being home schooled so I started creating subjects for myself, like painting. My family went to the library every week so I would check out three to four books a week to read. Reading has always been a strong suite for me because it was something I became good at and was allowed to do. I wasn’t allowed to read everything but I was allowed to read a lot more than fundies.

I bet Michaela was not allowed the time needed for extra studies. She was KJ’s right hand helper and that likely cut into her free time.

I politely disagree. I think Jill would’ve been in the same boat—you can school until you become a wife and mother. I think Michaela only got more education because she didn’t have a baby. If she had gotten pregnant immediately after the wedding, I think she would be a SAHM
I think Jill would be a good nurse if she went back to school. I don’t see that happening. But I could be wrong.

I always thought Jill could be a good doula maybe a bit heavy on the Jesus stuff, but hey there is a market for that. She could earn money with limited study and then do midwifery in the future if she wanted. She does seem to have a calm and kind nature. She has (appeared to) have had horrific birth stories so she has some compassion for length and pain and not getting the result you wanted (other than a live baby).

But don’t Carlin, Erin, Whitney and Josie all work? And didn’t Alyssa work until she got sick with SVT? Why is working as a hair stylist or cleaner OK, but working as a nurse against the rules for a mom?

None of the Duggar woman have shown in inclination in this area. Well, maybe Joy...

Likely because they see the former's jobs as "hobby jobs." They aren't full time and they can easily cut back on their schedules if another baby comes.

A nurse has a strict schedule with little flexibility and she has a real boss she has to answer to. It smacks of being invested in a career rather than just trying to make a little extra money for the family around the husband's schedule.

Nursing is fairly flexible and offers many part time positions. I worked as a nurse for 35 years and only worked FT for the first 2 years.   I’d say it’s a great way to augment a family’s income. You are right though, you do work for and answer to another entity. Also, it’s a 24/7/365 job. You may not get your anniversary, holidays, lover’s day, weekends off.

I think scheduling is part of it. As a hairdresser working out of your home, you can take every Sunday off. Many nursing jobs don't have that option. Modesty, I am sure also plays a part. Nurses may have to help a male patient use the toliet. As a hairdresser, you are likely to have a female clientele and wouldn't have to help a male customer use the toliet.

Katie wasn't allowed to be a nurse not because nursing is ungodly, but because it couldn't be learned at Crown.

In addition, Carlin, Whitney and Erin only work for a few hours now and then (they have employees) and take the kids to the workplace if needed. I suspect Josie works part-time too. A nurse schedule is very difficult for a homeschooling mama even if it is part time, unless the husband is the one staying at home or with a very flexible schedule.

Oh with the increasing demand for LPNs, I'd say she probably could find some more flexible gigs. But she can't do it from home and she can't bring her kids.

Plus Fundies have always been more about appearance than logical consistency. Daycare and nannies are wrong, even part time, but it's fine to drop your kids off at your family's for extended periods of time. Debt is bad but don't worry about health or life insurance.

  • 4 months later...

In the comments section of her last instagram picture someone asked her if she is working as a nurse and she replied: " I do not have a nursing job at the moment as I am seeing a fertility specialist and with the many test needed my schedule must remain very flexible. I am however volunteering and studying online to keep my nursing knowledge up to date. "

I agree with you. The Bates don't care about Michaela's education. They barely mentioned her graduation but go on and on about every pregnancy/wedding. Even now, they post about her business selling baby blankets but they don't say anything about being a nurse (although they  seem to use her as medical resource ). I think Michaela got the education she wanted because SHE pushed for it not because the Bates are more education for women friendly. TBH I don't think Jill wants to be a midwife/doula/nurse anymore -which is fine of course. If she did want more education, she could get it now. I doubt Derrick would refuse her permission and one of her children is in school and the other will be soon (so she'd have more time).

For all the other issues the Bates kids have with needing and wanting attention - directly related to being simply a number in the family - Michaela is probably the most independent of the group. Yet she is the one everyone, including her own mother, takes for granted. Kelly asks her medical questions like she used to ask her to sew things. It's a very odd relationship in comparison to how overly involved Kelly is with her other adult daughters.
