Dillards 88: 'Cause We're Living in a World of Fools

I also think part of it is the brands Jill advertises compared to Jinger.

For instance, the modest sportwear brand makes complete sense in the whole image of Jill, where a mainstream donutbrand does not fit with Jinger.

I feel like Jill only picks the brands that she really likes herself where Jinger just picks the brands that she would like to be associated with. And then we have Anna who seems to take every random brand that wants to advertise with her.

yep, totally. The brands that Jill partners with are very much part of her world and actively want somebody like her, with beliefs like hers, to represent them. And vice versa, she's got this whole 'mindful Christian' vibe where she wants to take part in mainstream consumerism, educate her kids, enjoy sex etc etc but in a manner that doesn't compromise her convictions. So I think she tends to partner with brands that are a good fit, especially in the last few years.

Jinger doesn't quite seem to grasp that her convictions are a stumbling block to the sort of influencer she'd like to be, and the lifestyle she'd like to represent. And equally the brands themselves are not doing their homework. Certainly there's plenty of appetite for religious fundamentalism to look slick and trendy but she's not doing a good job reconciling the two things into one package, and I suspect it's much harder to do in LA than in Arkansas.

Clearly some people here have never been raised in a cult.  It is very rare to wake up one day and turn your back on everything that you know. It takes time. It starts with small steps and vague

Sometimes people write here like conservative bigots are a small minority in the US, but Trump had the second most votes in history. He got over 74 million votes. Some of them from people that doesn’t

My hope is not so much for Jill herself as it is for Sam and Izzy. Even at five years old Israel has probably been exposed to a wider variety of people and ideas than his cousin Mackynzie who is twice

I am not going to argue with your main point about conservative bigots not being a small minority in the US. It's disturbing how many of my fellow citizens voted for a man with the frightening traits Trump has. But I was curious, so I looked it up. Trump received a little less than 63 million votes, not 74 million. And more importantly, Hillary Clinton received over 2 million more votes than he did, over 65 million votes. We still have many problems and much work to do here, even with President Biden's election, but I'm trying to have hope.

(I found the vote totals on more than one site, but Wikipedia agrees with The New York Times, CNN, etc., and it's easier to find the statistics.)

ETA--Oh. I just found where you got the 74 million. That's how many votes Trump got in 2020. Oops. :pb_redface: I'm still pinning my hope on the fact that his supporters were not the majority in either election.

They were not. And please remember that conservatives have fewer roadblocks to voting. "We" (not me, my state has like 4 people and just doesn't vote due to it not mattering at all) had hour long lines. People waited for 6, 12, 18 hours in line to vote. That wasn't the case for most conservative districts who had more polling locations. In 2018 (most recent data I could find) only a handful of Congressional districts had a voting rate of more than 60%. Most people vote, but we have a lot of voters who aren't voting.

I don't think that people understand that just because Derick is a bigoted opportunist seeking fame and money, it doesn't mean Jill is. No one knows what Jill thinks. It's quite possible she disagrees with Derick politically (and more), yet, doesn't emotionally feel there's anything she can do about it because he is all she has right now. Jill has never provoked others on social media like Derick has. She doesn't stir the pot. She's married to a jerk but it doesn't mean she is one. Jill is in a vulnerable position right now with just learning about healthier ways to live in therapy, speaking out about the rift with her family, changing her faith and lifestyle, etc. It's not reasonable to expect Jill to leave Derrick right now after being shunned from her family. Personally, I feel bad for Jill because I think she feels stuck to someone who lacks empathy, is an opportunist, yet, feels she has nowhere else to go.

Jill's friend that studied physical therapy and is now involved with an MLM, Rachel Virden, babysits her kids a lot and I feel she's been influential with Jill. Unlike Kristen Nicole Young (Jessa and Jill's friend via Sierra), NONE of the other Duggar siblings follow Rachel yet, Jill is appears very close with her and two other people on social media. I think the Duggars don't approve of who Jill is friends with now. David Waller (who is a social climber that is close to Jim Bob) and is Priscilla's husband (Priscilla and Jill used to be very close) is a pastor and on their livestream videos, he has been frequently preaching about warning others who they are friends with. Additionally, David mocked Priscilla's sister (without naming her) on stage with JB and Michelle at a speech where they discussed the daughters wearing pants. Priscilla used to follow Jill on Instagram and like every picture but she's unfollowed her now. It's not very Christian.

I feel bad for Jill and I'm mad that the Duggars and most of her sisters are shunning her. 2nd to Jana, Jill did the majority of the child-rearing, obeyed all their rules while living there, and it's horrific that she is being done so dirty by her family.

It is horrific on every level, but particularly so because JB and M had different beliefs, values and made far different decisions than their own parents did. JL never publicly shunned or distanced JB and M, even though he disagreed with their reproductive decisions, yet JB could not do the same for Jill or any of his grown offspring. What a bunch of BS JB spouts about leave and cleave and head ships...he certainly conveniently leaves out the part of doing what I say or I will shun your family. The icing on the cake was JB even badmouthed his own father in one of his books. WTactualF. What a poor role model and bully. No wonder JB was (is) a Trump supporter.

There will be even more voters in four years, and that record will be smashed, thank whatever deity.

Well thankfully Biden has the record. :)

But Trump might very well smash his 74 millions himself. He’ll be back. Or one of his kids will. I’m sure of it. 😬😱

The fact that it’s so hard for some Americans to vote, and that that’s an actual part of some politicians strategy to win makes me sad. In Sweden voting is so easy. My husband works for a local council and before the last election part of his job was to visit disabeled people to collect their votes so they didn’t have to travel.  No lines. No registration. No excuses not to vote. And we have a high turn out, 87% in 2018.

Would Jill be able to find a job that would sustain her and is good enough to offer childcare/pay enough for childcare? I guess she can work when they are in school but it is never that simple...

So in my state, it's pretty easy to vote. We have two weeks of in person absentee early voting, anyone can request a mail-in absentee ballot, and you can get ballots in like 8 languages. You don't need ID, but you do need to either know a poll worker, bring your voter registration card, or a state ID.

For local elections, it's even easier. They mail everyone a ballot. You fill out out and mail it back or put it in a box at a pre-determined place.

Unfortunately, the Republicans want to make it harder because they saw our city go completely blue for assembly within two years of mail-in only.

I really hate it when people criticize “busing people in” to polling places. As if providing transportation to allow someone to vote is a bad thing. Lack of transportation should never be the reason why someone can’t vote and if “busing people in” is what it takes then it should be done. For free. I don’t care if I don’t like the candidate you vote for if you are eligible to vote, you should be able to do so.

I don’t think Jill a would leave Derick- quite the opposite, she seems to genuinely adore and admire him. The bar was set pretty low for men in her immediate family so someone with an education and a streak of independence probably seems amazing to her. Nor do I expect her to publicly reject her siblings- families are funny things. I’m not in a fundie cult - my brother has behaved appallingly over the years to me and other family members but it’s taken me a long time to finally say no more and cut off contact. It still doesn’t feel right but I know it’s best for me and my family- we just don’t need the toxicity and the drama.

However in 2016 Derick said he supported Trump solely on the issue of abortion- I’d be really surprised if he flipped this time and I think he has considerable influence on Jill as he’s keen to point out how educated he is.

As a non US person I find it incredible that abortion is such a huge issue for voters - but you only have to look at the comments on Twitter feeds of politicians to see ‘baby killer’ thrown around no matter what the issue being discussed.

Politicians have propagated wedge issues like abortion to keep the masses distracted while they fleece our pockets from behind. They distract us with copper pennies while simultaneously stealing trillions. And it’s proven successful.

I am paraphrasing but I recently read a book by a Baptist pastor, MAGA Seduction, he talked about how yes he finds abortion abhorent but both sides NEED that issue. It is a voting "carrot" dangled in front of the masses.

It just astounds me that the 100% anti-abortion crowd are the very same people who love, not accept or tolerate, but love guns and capital punishment. The mental gymnastics this takes must bring on vertigo. Remember the Duggars and how they’ve been shown to let their children, at the time, handle firearms? The Republicans are good, abortion and guns, brown people and socialism. So much hate for a pro life crowd.

By the time Jill could get in to nursing school, graduate, pass the boards and secure a job, Izzy will be old enough to babysit. OTOH, she could also work an off hours job thus significantly reducing the need for childcare.

I don't know what sort of qualifications you would need to work in a care home/nursing home in the US/Arkansas, but maybe this is something Jill could do, perhaps part-time.

Realistically why would she? It’s hard work and traditionally not well paid. She can earn more with her paid partnerships (especially as she seems to be taking them seriously now and not have Israel filming her). If she’d really wanted work as a midwife or nurse the time to do it would have been before she had children - instead of sitting in the car park with Derick’s lunch. She may well have changed her mind about nursing/midwifery - it may have been one of the ‘acceptable’ careers she felt she could say in front of her parents (and even then they didn’t bother to support her).
As things stand she can make money from her followers and still be at home for the children while they are small. if Derick gets a job with a law firm he’s going to be working very long hours so they may have decided that at least one of them needs to be at home.
