Dr. Jill Biden: The 46th First Lady

This whole "Mrs. vs. Dr." thing can be settled in one way:  Just ask her how she wants to be addressed.

I think she'll be a terrific First Lady.

Dr. Biden is the First Lady to the 46th president, but not the 46th First Lady!

Quote

Over 47 women have held the role of First Lady as of 2017. However, not all those who have served as a first lady were spouses to the presidents. If the president was a bachelor or widower, or if his wife was unable or unwilling to perform the role, other female relatives or friends were called upon to carry out the first lady's official duties; thus, there have been more first ladies than presidents. For more information and biographies on each of the first ladies,

James Buchanan, believed by historians to be our (now) 2nd worst president, didn't have a First Lady because he actually had a First Gentleman.  He's almost universally believed to have been gay, and moved into the White House with his "butler."  Harriet Lane was his female escort at White House events.

I first heard of Ms. Lane when I heard of the Harriet Lane Home, which was a pediatric division of Johns Hopkins Hospital and is now a clinic, and a pediatric medical reference, and assumed she was the first female doctor there until I learned otherwise.

I wonder how Trumpers plan to top the disgusting “Finally, a President with balls and a First Lady without them!”

...on second thought, maybe I don’t want to know. ?

And Woodrow Wilson had three first ladies.  First was his wife Ellen.  Then, after she died, their daughter Margaret filled the role of "White House social hostess" which later was renamed the First Lady.  Then Wilson remarried while still in office, so his second wife, Edith, became his third First Lady.

ETA:  googling tells me there were several presidents with two or three first ladies, including the phenomenon of the middle one being a family member serving in between two presidential marriages.

Last night, Fucker Carlson, referenced Dr. Biden's degree as one step up from Dr. Pepper and stated that her dissertation was unimportant.  My son then had the balls to tell me my doctorate was a "gimme  degree" and a step down from  Dr. Pepper.  I showed him and the boyfriend the latest citation of my research in an international journal.  They shut up pretty quickly.    Disclaimer: Fox was on because my son and boyfriend love it.  I hate it.

Maybe he meant Dr. Pepper Schwartz, sociology professor and advisor on Married At First Sight? Or Dr. Robert Pepper, therapist? Or Dr. Marion Pepper, immunologist? Or Dr. Ian Pepper, environmental microbiologist? Or Dr. Tory Pepper, therapist? Or Dr. Ashanti Pepper, therapist? Or Dr. Jessica Pepper, social scientist? Or Dr. Darrell Pepper, mechanical engineer? Or Dr. Molly Pepper, professor of management?

(there are many more, but you get the point. We all know Tucker won't get the point.)

Tucker is too obtuse to get the point.  The most upsetting part of his commentary on Dr. Jill Biden's and education in general was first he snarked on her dissertation by stating studying how to increase retention at community colleges was unimportant- which I beg to differ retention= completed degrees= a chance at higher paying jobs or less college debt, if transferring to a 4 year.  Secondly, his  condescending tone towards people getting  choosing to further their education was uncalled for.  We don't enroll in a doctorate program, because we want the title "Doctor" to show that we are better than others or have anxiety about our social class.  I personally could care less about the title, the kids I work with call me by my first name because that is my preference.  What I care about is the skill set that I learned while getting that degree- I get to help kids with extreme behavioral challenges.

This is pure misogyny with a side of anti-intellectualism.  It has always been with us but Trump's particular brand of populism has made it perfectly acceptable to berate people for thinking they are too high-falutin' smart or something.  I would bet cash money none of the assholes taking her to task for using the title Dr. have a PhD. What is Carlson's education background?

Carlson has a BA from a private liberal arts college in Connecticut called Trinity, according to wikipedia. He also attended a private boarding school for his high school education, which explains a lot. USNews ranks Trinity as #44 among national Liberal Arts colleges. Trinity is considered one of the Little Ivies, which to me indicates that his prep school did not do a sufficiently good job for him to go to a "real" Ivy School.

It's time to get down at Trinity College. The Princeton Review annual college guide for high school seniors ranks Trinity as the nation's No. 5 party school behind such keg party powerhouses as West Virginia University, which topped the list. (Aug 20, 1997)

I suspect this last factoid might be why TC actually went to Trinity College.

I actually did a high school visit to Trinity to consider for college before quickly realizing it wasn't at all the place for me. Yikes, maybe I was feeling his aura back then :pb_lol:

In 10th grade, he started dating the headmaster's daughter, and they got married after his college graduation. Also, I don't see the Fox News people getting puffed up over Dr. Sebastian Gorka, who has a doctorate in political science. But, IIRC, he tends to pop up on Hannity's show, not Carlson's.

So... they encourage disrespect to the incoming First Lady because she actually is intelligent and was dilligent enough to complete a doctorate, but we're supposed to be highly respectful to the current First Lady who immigrated under questionably-legal circumstances and whose nudie pics (taken for money, because you know that matters to the "conservatives" supporting her) are easily accessible by anyone who wants to see them?

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/22/politics/mcconnell-trump-impeachment-conviction-republicans/index.html

Washington (CNN)As the House prepares to send articles of impeachment to the Senate on Monday, CNN has learned that dozens of influential Republicans around Washington -- including former top Trump administration officials -- have been quietly lobbying GOP members of Congress to impeach and convict Donald Trump. The effort is not coordinated but reflects a wider battle inside the GOP between those loyal to Trump and those who want to sever ties and ensure he can never run for President again.

I know people talk about what the FLOTUS wears more than what degrees they might have or their careers, but I do like what Dr. Biden wore that night.

Wow, that's really cool. A flower from each of state and territory on the dress? That's great.
