Maxwell 42: The Young and the Vestless

We had a fireplace in our dining room in Minnesota and I loved it. We don't have any fireplaces in our new home, but it is just too hot here in the desert southwest for it to be a priority for us. We do have a nice outdoor fire pit area in our new home. I had hope for an outdoor fireplace but we just didn't find one in any of the houses we looked at. Maybe in our next house.

Wow, that house is enormous! Good for them for getting away from the fathership.

Holy Fellowship Hall, Batman! They can hold conferences, start a home church, and raise up a very large Quiverfull in that home. Actually, the place I give the Duggars and Maxwells credit [no pun intended] is living debt free. We can quibble about weather leasing a water softener is debt or whether having a line of credit for business as opposed to personal use is ok, but honestly? How well would we all be living if we didn't have a car payment or, in a public transportation-oriented city, sky high rent? That said, it will be interesting to see THIS Maxwell family grow.

Forgot--Maye someone will actually attend the very nice Nazarene College there? Just a hope!

I seriously wonder what Steve thinks of HOAs. Don't they exert some bit of control over the owner? (My only knowledge of HOAs is hearing friends who are part of one complaining about restrictions, including one that banned hanging laundry outside.)

Isn't Joseph the brother on the cover of the Preparing Sons book? If he took out a mortgage to buy this house, I wonder if Steve is getting those reprinted with a still-in-favor son featured on the cover.

If the timing is truly such that he bought the new house before the old one sold, then that probably means he had enough saved for the down payment on the new place and then kicked whatever mortgage he may have taken out into the ground with the payment from the sale of his house-in-cash. That or I am in the WRONG line of work, if what he's doing can enable them to live solely on the income of someone with only a homeschool diploma* while saving enough to spend nearly half a million on a house at age 31, all while keeping their kids in stylish clothing and quality shoes.

*that's not throwing shade at all homeschool graduates, just the ones that graduated from the SOTDRT with worksheets and Bible outlining in lieu of real education.

So as much as I would need to get away from Steve if I was their daughter in law- I think there are perks to living close by. When you have tons of small children it would be nice to have lots of childcare nearby. Mary and Anna take the kids once a week for Aunties playtime and Teri has time with the kids each week too. This is probably very nice for these moms who have to homeschool a million kids everyday.

I'm watching  Cat Ballou on TCM and they just showed a group of churchwomen marching to the gallows where Cat is to be hanged and one of the women is holding a sign asking Cat where she will be spending eternity.  I thought immediately of Stevehovah.  (if you've never seen Cat Ballou, you should and that goes even if you think you hate Westerns.)

@SassyPants and @usmcmom,  we have a fireplace in our den which is attached to the kitchen.  I'd like to put in a gas fireplace or even a wood stove in there, but it will need to wait until next spring.

I love that movie! Its so funny!

@Bethy, a friend of mine lived in a neighborhood here in Greenville/Greer on a corner lot.  She had a pre-schooler and the HOA got onto her for having a swing set that was visible from the street.  As Janis pointed out to me, no matter where she and her husband had put their daughter's swing set, it was going to be visible from the street.  There is that GEICO  ihomeowner's insurance  ad with the HOA from hell with the HOA lady cutting down the couple's hanging baskets of flowers, their mailbox for being over regulations, and so on, but I like the one where the couple has Aunts.  My favorite one though was the ad where the couple had the Ratt problem.

Maybe if we had a HOA, though, maybe our ex-neighbors would not have been such a complete pain in the butt.

Love those Ratt and Aunts GEICO commercials.

We don't have an HOA where we live, but my sister does.  That GEICO commercial isn't far off the mark!

Would Steve see an HOA as being indebted for life, or as just another monthly bill like water and electricity?  Not sure.

I wonder if Joseph was frequently driving to K.C. to meet with clients and decided he might as well move there?

Far too few people know of the existence of this gem and it’s a cryin’ shame. It’s a Western, people, but it’s a comedy! You must see!  I mean, Lee Marvin alone…who won an Oscar for it. And dare I admit that I still know all the words to the theme song?

Spoiler

That’s…one huge house (not my taste and the size makes me itch, but hey, they must like it) and very unlike the typical Maxwell abode, which tend to be pretty modest and unassuming. I have no idea what it means in terms of possibly loosening up on their extreme beliefs but good for them for forging their own path away from the compound—and setting privacy boundaries.

Of course I don't actually know, but I've been operating under the assumption that the move is, in large part, because of Joseph's clients. Leavenworth isn't a hotbed of business - Kansas City offers so much more. He works out of his home, so he doesn't have an office to meet clients in. He has to go somewhere to meet them - and I figured most of them are already in KC. He advertises as "Kansas City's Magento Specialist" - that's his market.

I would like to think there is some wing spreading and all that, but I would still bet that the main motive was business. Getting a giant assed house with room to move around is a bonus. But, he is clearly doing well in his business, and can only do better being in the middle of it instead of 30-40 minutes away.

I let myself imagine that Elissa is thrilled to be free of being close enough to have to go over to the father house all the time and/or having someone always within ear shot of whatever they do or showing up just because they're in the neighborhood or something. I doubt it, but it's fun to imagine. She will definitely be kept busy keeping that house clean while raising a brood of children.

Also, it's pretty obvious they have chosen to remain out of the dog & pony blog now that the dog & pony show is over. They rarely show up (in the blog) for anything having to do directly with them - they're usually background in pictures and seldom directly even mentioned. Being away from the family means popping up in fewer pictures as well as setting an even deeper boundary between themselves and the main Maxhell.

Now I desperately want to watch that and Lee Remick in The Hallelujah Trail! Probably both are so politically incorrect today they cannot be aired on television or cable or streaming, but.....

One thing I find interesting is that a fair number of 60s Western films had some humor in them or were downright comedies,  The Searchers had a comedy element in it in the love triangle between Laurie Jorgenson, Martin Pawley and Charlie McCorry.  Of course, Ken Curtis, who played Charlie, went on the play Festus on Gunsmoke.  Gunsmoke and Bonanza frequently had humorous plot lines, especially with Festus and Hoss, and I think some of the other Westerns did as well.  There's even a list of 1960s Western comedy films with a subcategory of Western comedy-drama films which is where you'll find Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

1960s Western comedy films

And because I mentioned The Searchers:

New blog post confirms that Joseph and Elissa have moved. They’ll still be coming back regularly for Sunday lunches apparently.

Here’s the official explanation. I wonder what Steve thinks of their church.

Which church do John and Chelsy attend? I can imagine Chelsy wanting to attend the church Jesse and Joe attend because it seems like there are plenty of people to socialize with, and Anna is one of Chelsy’s friends.

Two things of note.

There is the Anna Patrice we've all been waiting for! I guess "she" decided what she wants to be called.

And two, Sarah states 'they said they'll come back for Sunday lunch..." not that they are, not that they will be, but they said they would. That's a bit non committal in Maxhell. And pretty easy to not follow through with. As the latest picture of their Sunday lunch proved. Neither KC dwelling reversal was there. In normal worlds, it's not a big deal, but for Maxhell - those of the most carefully chosen (if grammatically incorrect/convoluted) words, it's pretty flippant.

It’s Teri who posted on the Joseph/Elissa move.  Seems to me she’s the source of the Anna crew naming.

Funny how and where subdivision martinets assert their whisps and whispers of power.

I noticed that as well.

And really "regularly" could mean anything.  Once a month, once a quarter.  It doesn't necessarily mean weekly.

If I was Elissa, I wouldn't want to make that drive every Sunday with two (three?) kids in the car.

To be Fair, I imagine Christo's family would rather be there than have Anna going thru cancer! But, I do think it is hilarious that the little brothers are breaking away. Maybe their kids will have a little freedom, too.

Especially since two of those kids are young enough to need regular naps.

Imagine, getting 3 kids ready for church, attending church, then jumping in the car for 45 minutes or whatever it is, to have bean burritos for lunch with tons of people, then having to drive home - all without the kids napping. Didn't Teri say their family lunches are at 1? Sort of entering prime nap time there. Even sleeping in the car isn't a quality nap for growing babies/toddlers.

John & Chelsy were at the one where they posted pictures. But, yeah, I think their big family bean burrito-fests are shrinking.

Two Maxwell sons selling their debt free homes are two of the events of 2020 that excite me. It’s hard to explain that to others.
