Ashley Salyer: Stalking Planned Parenthood and Rejecting Bateses

HideousGreenShirt

Recommended Posts

Ashley is the ex-girlfriend of Nathan Bates. Their relationship was featured on Bringing Up Bates, including Nathan's heartbreak. She's from a large ATI family in New York and recently married Eric Hoover (who looks exactly like Nathan Bates).

Ashley and Eric met through "sidewalk counselling" with a Pro-life group (Love Life) that apparently stand outside Planned Parenthood locations every day and try to prevent "murder"*.

*Both Ashley and the organisation refer to abortion as murder.

Ashley wears pants, loves missioncations and remains close friends with various Bates sisters. Since she's is now married and is therefore an official adult by fundie standards, she deserves her own thread. Since she returned from her honeymoon, she has been posting hateful stories on her Instagram about harassing people at Planned Parenthood.

Mods, please move if this thread is in the wrong place.

The best part (and when I mean the best I mean the WORST) is that she harassing women SANS mask. Also regardless of why they are going in her opinion doesn't matter. They've given rides to women after "converting them" and I'm so nervous to hear what happens to these poor women afterwards they are basically convinced to say okay I won't have an abortion.

I mean, if it's a free ride and I was just there for my annual pap smear I might be tempted.  And then I'd regret it after listening to all the preaching.  There were times a cab or uber was a stretch (and those were the years I was using planned parenthood and crossing the picket lines occasionally while people screamed prayers at me).  That location didn't even perform abortions.

I'd get in the car, they'd ask me where I want to go, I'd tell them the address, and surprise, it's another Planned Parenthood and I'm going to ask for the biggest, bloodiest abortion in their honor.

Why would anyone waste their time and energy protesting at a women's health clinic that doesn't even provide abortions?

Fundie logic escapes me...

They assume all PP's perform abortions.

So love in her story when she says the only reason a woman being yelled at by extremist morons wouldn't want to stop and chat to them is because she's being coerced by her partner. And the only reason he looks angry is because he's abusive. Not that he and his partner are seeking medical care and morons are screaming about murder.

Yes sure- that's the only possible explanation!

Also for someone so anti choice very funny that she describes the woman as starting her second or third trimester- those are quite different

I thought about what it is that bothers me so much about those people who harass women at Planned Parenthood (besides that it is just SO arrogant/rude/hurting others etc.).

It is the not critical thinking-part. The fact that they will ALWAYS vote for a politician who claims to be "pro-life", while it could very well be a pro-choice politician who is actually making an effort to bring down/is succeeding in bringing down the abortion numbers by providing girls/women with sex education, contraception, health care, etc.

And their heads explode if anyone attempts to tell them this. They don't actually seem to care about lowering abortion rates, they just like to have stuff to scream about.

Dang...I'm so disappointed that she is still harassing people. Thought for sure she'd be too busy being married. Then again, if she met her husband there then he is probably, totally cool with her hobby at the moment. I rather hear about her honeymoon and how she's unjusting to married life.

Do the protesters ever realize how much attention they bring to the clinics? There was an abortion clinic in my neighborhood that I only knew was there because of the protestors. It was like they were advertising.

I’m in Australia and that happened to me too. Fortunately Australia made a new law. I’m fuzzy on the details but it’s along the lines of no one is allowed to protest with x amount of metres from a clinic. So awesome. I have not seen them since. Also there little shop front they had down the road that was about helping with pregnancy it had some smoozy name I know longer remember is gone. It flipped me out because I was feeling like I was in the states.

They have something like that here in America. People protest still but it will be x amount of feet away or the other side of the street.

I remember ours was a fairly decent amount. Like  500 metres. Not good eye sight and poor hearing. They will barely be white noise.

I always like when people donate to PP in the names of these people and their politicians.  Might make a great wedding gift for these two....

Her husband SEe If founded a pro-life faction when he was at Penn. I'm sure he has no problem with Ashley doing her stupid protests as long as she has dinner on the table when he gets home.

I’ve had two abortions. Both times, I was completely at peace with my decision. Both times, I appreciated having safe access to a clean facility (not a Planned Parenthood)  employed by supportive, non judgmental people and living in a country where I could safely do this. It enrages me that people like Ashley feel entitled to harass people about their personal decisions that do not impact them one bit. If I showed up to my appointment and encountered people  like Ashley and her husband, I would have been enraged. Not sure how I would have handled it to be honest but I don’t think it would have ended well. I seriously can’t believe she and I are both from NYC, as her family actually doesn’t live too far from me.

I totally agree with you. I was terrified that there would be people waiting to harrass me when I arrived for the procedure. I was so relieved to find that the clinic was on an upper floor of what looked like an office building, totally inconspicuous and free of people like Ashley.

I think all women should have safe, affordable access to whatever form of reproductive care they need.  Since I'm not living their lives, I'm not equipped to decide what's best for them.  I am so fortunate that I never actually had to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.  If I ever need to terminate a pregnancy in the future, it will be because of a catastrophic event like a birth defect incompatible with life or a major health risk to me.  My husband is NOT on board with me making myself a martyr for a baby.

I would be devastated to encounter a group of people like Ashley outside a clinic if I had to endure the trauma of losing a very wanted pregnancy.  They are complete assholes to think they know better than the women walking through the doors.

I'm such a troll that I'd probably be going in for a pap smear, see protesters, then lean across the barrier and say to the them, "I'm doing this so I don't have a baby that turns out like you."

People do it in Mike Pence's name all the time.  I see FB posts from pro-choice groups all the time, usually placing the PP logo and Pence's face side-by-side, encouraging people to do so.  It never gets old.

In many places where people have to walk through a screaming mob of protestors to get an abortion, it’s possible to volunteer to accompany patients so they don’t have to walk through that alone. I just learned about that recently and thought I’d share.

Thank you for sharing!! @lumpentheologie I was also going to suggest this. Pre covid I volunteered with PP teaching sex ed throughout my city to high schools and our volunteer leader brought up how you can sign up to be an escort (most PP have one day if they do offer abortions but you can do it even when they don't because they are always going to have protests). They recommend you sign up for it if you know you won't yell at the protesters and can remain calm (which I cannot so I did not sign up lol) but if you're able to it's awesome!!

I think one of the worst things about Ashley and her sisters and I suppose these groups in general protesting and harassing people is emotional maturity.

These are people who have literally never been alone with a (non-related) member of the opposite sex, never held hands or kissed somebody, never had a deep, meaningful conversation with someone. All they've done their entire lives is read and memorise the Bible. Any life experiences they've had, have been through their church or through a strict religious organisation. They don't have a single clue about how much a woman could have gone through to come to the decision to have an abortion.

It's pretty disgusting to me that these young girls feel entitled to approach women going through such an intense time and attempt to emotionally blackmail them with their bible learnin'.

Ashley frequently posts intimate details about the women she encounters at PP - names, life situations, drug use, the procedures. She also always paints the male as an abuser. While I'm sure there are some people who could be abusers, I'm also sure that some of the men accompanying their partners to appointments at PP are just not thrilled at some teenage girl angrily spewing Bible verses and yelling about murder.
