NIKE! (huh? where is that from?)

Lucky Lass on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3911 :

Aren't men intelligent enough to turn their heads, keep their own thoughts clean, and not have to rely on someone to shout "Nike" at them?

Could someone please tell me what that's all about? Who does that?

If I see a bud looking thoughtful, can I shout that out and be a blessing? Or will I just look moronic?

And, is Nike the shoe company (idolatry) or are they shouting out about half naked pagan goddesses (which would be an idol and a temptation, NIKE, NIKE, NIKE!)?

I think it refers more to look at your nikes.

Yeah, I haven't watched the Duggars in years, but from what I remember that's exactly what it means. Something immodest or inappropriate is ahead and you must look down at your Nikes, so you do not get defrauded.

"Nike" is a code word that one of the J'Slaves incorporated, I think. When an immodestly-clad lady passes by, one of them would shout "Nike!" so the young men of the Duggar clan know to look down at their shoes, for example, Nikes, so they won't be defrauded. It's a lot easier than making sure they're wearing Nikes rather than Reeboks or Converse and having to alter your code word. :P

I looked this one up in the dictionary once, since I was so curious myself. I've never seen an explanation on the Duggar or Gothard website, so I looked it up in the dictionary.

I always assumed it was the Nike shoe reference, but it you were telling your brother to look at his shoes, wouldn't you say, "Nikes"?

Nike was the Greek/Roman goddess of Victory. So looking down (at your Nike sneakers?) gives you victory over temptation. That's my guess anyway!

Ah, Duggars--thanks!

(and in that case, doubtful that it has anything to do with Nike Athena since I don't know that SODRT has a worksheet for that)

That's Pagan though! The Duggar's wouldn't touch that with a 20 foot pole with a bible duct taped to the end!

Here's the episode:

4:40 - They start watching TV

5:40 - Joy-Anna starts covering the TV with her hands

6:05 - Joy-Anna and Josiah mention defrauding

6:55 - Michelle explains self-control for "older boys"

7:10 - Jana explains "Nike"

I find it interesting because we actually hear the questions when they're talking to Joy and Jana.

Although personally I think that pointing it out would just make that much more noticeable...

It does, it totally does. It is being modest in the most immodest possible way, which describes the Duggars in a nutshell.

      Stupid loneliness!
Kid 1 went back to college (yeah! But sad foe me, she stayed with me all summer. It was nice to start a new phase in our mother/daughter relationship)
Zero prospects on dates. (Not that I have tried online dating, scared of that but I have reached put to a new group at church, etc.
I asked a friend to go to dinner the other night so I wasn't eating alone, again. The friend had plans, all my friends always have plans. I see stuff on social media, I'm never invited. I'm single, I'm the 3rd or 5th wheel.
My one parent friend at kid 2's fall sport won't be there because their daughter made varsity (Yeah for her!!! Seriously happy for her. Sad for me for another sport I basically sit alone, did that majority of spring and summer sporting events.)
And now I'm crying as my mom told me 2 different funny stores that former teachers remembered about my twin. Both stories were about how they got a crack out of my twin's antics (my parents went to a funeral today and saw former colleagues). Teachers remember me (after all I was a twin and teachers' kid) but none would have memorable stories of me.
      I feel invisible.
Don't worry, this will pass,  it always does. I just need a pity party for a few days. I'm not in anyway going to harm myself. As lonely as I am, I have a very full life I (usually) love. I just needed to vent and cry for a moment.
If you are still reading this, thanks Fjer. 😊

Absolutely awful about the fires on Maui. In 2019, I stayed in Lahaina. I liked to sit on the sea wall, which is the only structure left now, and watch the water. People are receiving help, but many had to leave pets. Please donate to the Maui Humane Society, which is leading efforts to find, treat, and reunite pets.

Nebraska’s new football coach, who is involved in an organization called Man Up Ministries, labels certain players “Alphas” and sometimes “extreme Alphas” and the local paper has a nice piece on why people objecting to the term “alpha male” are wrong and it has a “nice ring”. 🤮🤮🤮🤮
