Ahhh, there are two parts to the lawsuit:

Liberty is PISSED.

Does anyone know the status of the Fallwell nepotism hires?  There were at least several Falwell family members making bank at LU.

Trey also got fired this week.

it has been glorious.

The departure comes months after Falwell Jr. resigned as president of the school in the wake of controversial posts on social media and allegations he and his wife, Becki Falwell, had a years-long sexual relationship with a business associateallegations the former president has disputed.

Does this seem like an extremely sanitized, might I say, wholesome version?  But it is, after all, the Religious News Service.

In the meantime, Jerry Jr's brother, who has been the head pastor at Thomas Road Baptist, will become the LU campus pastor, so there's still major family influence in the upper echelons.  The guy he replaces is  "senior vice president for spiritual development and campus pastor" so I assume Jonathan will be the same.

Some numbers from Inside Higher Ed: Trey Falwell No Longer Liberty VP

Quote

Trey Falwell’s compensation totaled $234,310 in the fiscal year ending in June 2019, according to Liberty’s most recently available federal tax filing. Trey Falwell’s wife, Sarah, was listed as receiving $72,211 in compensation. Trey’s brother Wesley was listed as receiving $78,489 in compensation, and Wesley’s wife, Laura, was listed as receiving $59,193 in compensation. Falwell family members were also involved in operating companies that contract with Liberty.

Oh, and Jerry Jr. is back to hanging out on campus, going to a lacrosse game and tweeting about it.

Admin at LU with two brain cells to rub together should get a restraining order to keep him off campus, especially after it was reported that Jerry Jr. and Becki liked to ogle students.

That he is there will not be lost on the students who found his louche behavior repellent (not to mention hypocritical), while they are held to strict moral guidelines with serious consequences for any lapse.

There’s a safeguarding issue right there and a possible lawsuit on the way in LUs direction should something else untoward happen there in future.

I know we're consumed by the Josh Duggar arrest for child porn, but Holy Zipper, Jerry Jr. is off the rails out of control.

Save71 @save71L updated the original tweet: Some new details about last night’s event from one of its hosts: the event was a comedy show, not a party. Multiple families were present. According to others at the event, Falwell appeared visibly intoxicated, but he didn’t get the drinks from the party.

The video is embedded in this tweet:

I'm suspecting untreated alcoholism or he's self-medicating another problem with alcohol. He's totally unhinged and nobody seems capable of or inclined to rein him in.

He's operating in the gray zone -- not doing anything illegal and will continue to lurch along unless there's a  successful family intervention or he engages law enforcement through a car accident/DUI or domestic violence episode.

Liberty U needs to block him from LU properties STAT, if they haven't done it already.

Is he trying to piss off TPTB at Liberty or trying to get a whole bunch of the students booted?

Why not both?

To be honest I suspect the former mostly.

Isn't there anyone in his family who can convince Jerry that it is time to find a nice relaxing place to dry out and start his "restoration?"

Apparently not.  He desperately needs an intervention, but who knows how far gone Becki and the kids are; they may not be in a position to put it all together.

You'd think his True Christian™️ brother, Pastor Jonathan Falwell, would step in, but I guess not.

So much for being his brother's keeper.

I'll speculate that everyone,  his brother, other family members,  Liberty Univ staff  & legal teams, friends, pastors -- have tried suggestions, strong suggestions, interventions, screaming matches, threats, tears, begging -- without success.  That's the way it is with alcoholics when they are deep into addiction and spiraling down -- they can lose it all -- literally every single thing -- but no message can get through the concrete wall erected by an arrogant and narcissistic alcoholic.

I guess LU is just Falwell adjacent now, but this happened:

https://wset.com/news/abc13-investigates/liberty-university-enabled-on-campus-rapes-12-women-file-class-action-lawsuit-title-ix-lynchburg-virginia

I know who this female debate coach is, she was a student and on the debate team while I was there on that team.  This is incredibly disgusting and disappointing and while the coach was a very young adult, and in a patriarchal religion and university while dating (possibly newly married, i am very hazy on the timeline after I left and haven’t thought about it in years) the assistant debate coach.  Which is now the head debate coach.  So feel free to look at their current debate page to see the woman who did this.  She’s got a few kids, I wonder how she would feel if this happened to them at debate camp for fucks sake.

in 2000 when this 15 year old girl was photographed there was only one women debate coach.

A confused not-American here: Why is there a university police? Normal police don't investigate crimes that happened to students?

Or crimes that students committed?

I think it depends on the campus.  I got a disorderly conduct ticket at my first college and that was all campus police.  They did arrest a couple other people at the party who were charged with a lot more than a violation.  At my second college it was campus security; but they were not police and could not arrest.  That was a pretty sedate Christian college though and maybe they didn’t feel the need for police. The first college was a state university and I don’t know if that makes a difference.

University/campus police primarily enforce campus rules like parking violations, but they also handle some minor legal infractions like noise complaints, trespassing, and littering.  Having a seperate force gives the university the power to handle petty infractions as they see fit and keeping students out of the legal system.  It's also supposed to relieve some of the burden from the student population on the local force.  We have many rural college towns where a huge number of the residents are students and the regular police force is very small.  The regular police are supposed to be called in for any larger and/or violent infractions like car theft, assault, or rape.  This sometimes doesn't happen, Liberty has a reputation for not calling the real police for rapes.

Campus security answer to the administration so they do what's good for the university, which is keeping away bad press. I think it was talked about some in the documentary The Hunting Ground about rape on university campuses, which I totally recommend if you have the emotional energy for it. IIRC, sometimes even local police forces in university towns would bow to the pressure of the university since they had so much power. I remember a case where the police didn't investigate accusations of rape against a student because he was a star football player and the police were fans of the team.

I went to a university which was situated on top of a small mountain, away from the rest of the city. We had problems because you were supposed to call security for emergencies before 911 because it was a 20 minute trip up the mountain and it was a maze once you get there. But no one knows the security number so everyone calls 911 in an emergency and they'd get transferred to security who were... not the most helpful. I think they're trained as security guards not as police and definitely not as paramedics so there wasn't much they could do.

They technically can.  However there are power dynamics involved, and young people who aren't aware of their rights.  Coverups are to protect the college's image.  If the student goes around them there are usually consequences, from harassment to academic repercussions to suspension or expulsion.  There is a federal law requiring colleges to report and investigate all claims of sexual assault (Title IX) but colleges still violate it.  Students are fighting back and suing colleges with mixed results.  Here's what happened to a 15 year old girl after being assaulted at a LU summer camp (warning: graphic). https://wset.com/news/abc13-investigates/liberty-university-enabled-on-campus-rapes-12-women-file-class-action-lawsuit-title-ix-lynchburg-virginia

My heart aches for these young women who were twice victimized.  Absolutely horrible.

This.  At my college alma mater, which was/still is located in a large city, things almost never involved police and if they were called, would defer to the school's administration/security to handle.  Only time a sexual assault involved police was when a student was assaulted off campus but anything on campus were handled by the college, if they were reported at all because most female students were too ashamed to report or didn't want further trouble.  That the college violated the Title IX rules, yes, they absolutely did.   In recent years, more students who were victimized are speaking out in spite of the repercussions and students in general are demanding better treatment on this and other areas.

Incidentally it's because of how the school has continually treated their students around these issues is why I recently severed all ties with them.  I also refuse to endorse them to anyone, I used to say just be cautious in considering the school, now I say absolutely do not go there.
