Duggars by the Dozen 39: Practicing Social Distancing by.... Having Family Night

To my ears the Duggars have a type of southern accent, but different from the deep south or the Carolinas.  I guess I just don't know what the "midwestern" accent sounds like, since my reference point for the midwest is Chicago and it seems that's not representative.

My accent is all over the place at this point, especially because I rarely speak English with native speakers. I was west coast with a strong northeast influence but now German has messed with my intonation, stress, and sometimes word order. ?‍♀️  I was recently talking to guy from South Africa and he was very confused.

My accent Is English. I sometimes struggle to differentiate between the Kiwi an Aussie accent and yet I'm half from there (raised in England) I am getting better though and i had a lot of teachers from both countries growing u so i think that helps. Sometimes when I'm really upset or angry some words do sound like they're spoken with a kiwi accent though for some reason, even though I've never left Europe. I feel the Kiwi accent is softer than the Australian none and that's how I determine which is which. I can tell the difference between an Irish and Northern Irish accent.

I struggle to differentiate American accents, apart from Texan and Californian accents.

Ahhh English accents. I will say, I, as a not native speaker, definitely fall for Oxford English and the Scottish accent. But ever since I watched The Expanse this includes not the type of Australien accent Bobby Draper (serious girl crush) has. I find those dialects have very beautiful (dare I say hot) melodic vibe.

Embarrassingly I actually thought that this might be the only big Australien accent. Lesson learned.

The British way of humour or insults will always have my heart though. Many have a way with words that always leave me amazed and make them sound pretty witty (even if they are not). It’s very different to my own language, where intonation is often used as the clue.

We definitely get exposed to BE and AE spelling in school (the books alternated every school year). Australien was never covered much and I definitely wasn’t exposed to the accent. Sadly hearing was much less of a thing back then. And when it was done, it was mostly a tape. Things have improved and my last English (grade 11-13) teacher watched great movies in OV with us (he was amazing. Never would have picked The Big Lebowski on my own). So when I started watching films in their original language I noticed I had a much easier time with Jane Austen than with a lot of AE products. It is much better now but I am also in general more exposed to BE due to my in laws (talking, radio, tv). I have definitely troubles to understand AE when people talk to me. Because it’s mostly not like the polished screen version (series and film are never as “bad” even when they use dialect. In all languages. Apart from reality trash.). The internet (especially YouTube) and games are a massive help and most people u40 speak a well enough English with I think a majority having it easier with AE. I feel the whole Brexit topic has changed that a bit, as we got more exposure to BE in our news and people started listening to BBC for first hand information.

I have a bit of a hybrid Australian accent - Australians ask me if I’m English, Poms ask me if I’m Aussie or Kiwi. Kiwis usually guess that I’m Australian but it takes them a while.

There are 3 widely ‘known’ Australian accents - cultivated/received (Cate Blanchett), General (Scott Morrison) and broad (Steve Irwin), but I genuinely think there are more. I can tell a South Australian from a NSWelsh wo/man within seconds. And since about 50% of us have a parent born overseas there are so many hybrid accents as well.

I've been wondering something: do the Duggars have Arkansas accents? I'm not American and my only other exposure to people from Arkansas is from documentaries about the West Memphis Three, and the people in those films have a much broader, stereotypically 'Southern' accent (at least to my foreign ears).
Most of the Duggars just sound quite generically American to me.

When I went to boarding school, I had roommates from both Northern Arkansas and Southern Arkansas. The ones from Southern Arkansas spoke with more of a twang, and the ones from Northern Arkansas had closer to a Midwestern accent. I agree with you that the Duggars sound pretty generic, except for saying "y'all" all the time.

I have an American Southwestern dialect. I drop consonants in the middle of words (like mountain), I pronounce "pull" and "pool" the same way (and mary-marry-merry), and I use more Spanish loanwords than people in other parts of the country. Now that I live outside the Southwest I'm picking up some dialectal things here but I haven't gone as far to start saying "beg" instead of "bag", thank God!

@Perrierwithlemon posted this in Alyssa's thread in the Bates Discussion. I thought about Mackynzie (sp) spending so much time with the 4 youngest Duggar daughters, particularly Jordyn and Josie, probably. Mackynzie is at the top of her heap, sister-momming (parenting) already. The youngest Duggars are at the bottom of their heap, never been sister-moms but are learning to be auntie-helpers.

I wonder how the interaction is between Mackynzie and the youngest Duggars? She may have been integrated long enough, basically most of her life, with the 4 youngest that she adapts to the BFF role easily, but she must notice the differences in the expectations of her and those of her aunts. I'd like a psychologist to study that relationship.

It was recently mentioned in the Anna thread that she stated she does not use the buddy system. I hope this means Mack has no more parental expectations than do the Lost Girls, but I can't help but believe she is at least somewhat of a sister-mom. It could also be that through her 'friendships' with the older Duggar daughters Anna has found out that they didn't like it and she has made a conscious decision to not do that to her own kids. Luckily she will never reach close to Michelle's numbers. I say 'numbers' because to Michelle her children ARE numbers. During a very early special, when all the kids and parents were wearing denim and red tops for Big Sandy or a vacation or something, Michelle proudly stated they were dressed that way so it would be easy to find her group. She didn't say my family, our family, my kids, our kids, she said "our group." That always stuck in my craw.

It has never seemed to me that Anna's mother used a buddy system so Anna may have come into the family biased against using such a method.  Her kids do seem much better cared for than the Duggar clan.

I think Anna's kids pretty much living at the TTH are just an extension of the youngest Duggars. I don't think Anna is needing Mac as a sister mom yet because her oldest 3 are being "educated" by Ben. Mac spends her days with her aunts, the boys probably entertain each other along with Tyler.

Anna hasn't reached critical mass of kids, yet, not to mention, she's got the added assistance, of extra hands close by. By this point in JB & M's marriage they had 8 kids and M was pregnant with Joy Anna, it was essentially just JB & M raising the kids, Boobs father thought he was an idiot (maybe not that word exactly but you know) for having so many kids there wasn't an army of older girls running around to help care for so many little mouths/hands/feet like their is now. Add to the growing lists of inlaws and hangers on, there is probably no shortage of hands to help fold laundry or hold a baby while she tends to another child

I don't know if laughing hard at this or scratch my head at the answer, maybe she meant no we don't have "J" names?  I would have answered like "yes we have chosen to use all C names" or something like this Screenshot_20200914-165420_Instagram.thumb.jpg.7412df8eb7fcc512e68f1c595af59d01.jpg

Well the asker said “I would like to know your kids names.” I would’ve answered the same way I think ??‍♀️

But she has all "C" names so, yes I would have answered "yes, I have all "C" names they are..."

Is not like she has all different names ?‍♀️

I guess it’s just semantics. I don’t see any issues but your right. It could be more concisely written.

Duggars made weird history. I wonder if it will cause a bit of a bump in members

I'm not sure where to put this. Madison Nicole Crane is longterm Duggar friend. In her Instagram stories (of her personal account), she is spreading lies about Breonna Taylor.

Breonna was sleeping. She was EMT, a more usual, essential member of the community than any of the Duggars and their friends. The cops entered her appartment using a "no-knock" warrant. She died while sleeping.

She claims to belong to a group called the "Freedomists". Joy and Austin also like this group. Doesn't Breonna deserve the freedom to live? To be alive?

How dare you, Madison Nicole defame a murdered woman?  If it were you, we would protest.. May God school you in ignorance, you miserable, hypocritical human being!

@Bluebirdbluebell Austin & Joy were special guests earlier this year on the Freedomist Instagram- at least one other Duggar has appeared with them. They are insufferable know alls who are all about the evils of socialism.
I didn’t know much about the Breonna Taylor case ( in the UK) until I saw British F1 driver Lewis Hamilton was wearing a shirt with her name on it. Having read about the case I’m horrified and furious these kids are spreading lies to suit their agenda.

Loved the photos on Anna's instagram of Maryella and Ivy at the piano. Perfect social distancing!  If the two little girls were together, the rest of their families were too. So much for dropping off masks and birthday gifts at the door. Don't they understand people catch the fakery?

That was at a Christmas party, well before Covid.

I dont think so. Anna said it was at Monday night family night and Maryella was a newborn at Christmas. Ivy would have only been 7 months. Definitely not taken at Christmas.

I can see this too.

Just want the world needs....another army of uneducated, brainwashed, (likely) unvaccinated people.

Do we know how Duggars feel about vaccines? I've seen some Dugg adjacent people promoting antivaxx and/or home cure "oil" type things.

Does Arkansas require vaccines for public schools? If so, we know at least Jill does.
