Nowadays leg braces are smaller and lighter and often go under pants so they're less visible.  Docs also tend to use smaller below-the-knee or ankle-high braces if possible.  My son used to wear knee-high braces and no one knew unless he was in shorts or you watched him carefully and saw his ankles didn't bend.  This picture shows what many of those kids who'd had polio would be wearing today.

Here's the other thing that pisses me off about these complete f**king morons: 

James was in the hospital for FIVE DAYS...at the Mayo Clinic, if I'm understanding his post correctly. That's an incredibly long time to be hospitalized these days.

My histrionic level here is ALL CAPS:   Every person he came in contact with during both of his hospitalizations, every person in the hospital, patient and staff, was masked up.  Every follow-up doc's appt, he's wearing a mask as are his health care providers.  To experience this and take the position that masks are not useful in preventing transmission of this illness is idiocy of the highest order, bordering on brain dead.   This is Diamond Level  cognitive dissonance.

Now, of course, I don't think there's anything wrong with a boy wearing kilts-- even all the time, in the USA. But knowing James' history with friends/parishioners who take their ethnic "identity" a tad too seriously; the ties with the blatant neo-Confederates in the VF movement; and the way James and Stacy still go on and on about their "heritage" and their "clan"... Well, any stuff like this that's associated with them makes me go, "hmm..."
