House of Representatives 2: Nancy is in Charge

I caught former CIA director on the Today show this morning. I was trying to find the link but of course failed. He spoke aboit how the secret service is the branch that coordinates the inauguration.

I did find this from October 2020. He clearly knows what he is talking about and he called this. Quote from the article "What really has the ex-CIA chief on edge? The social and political havoc Trump may unleash between Election Day and the possible inauguration of his Democratic rival, Joe Biden. Trump could provoke civil unrest."

 https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/10/18/john-brennan-ex-cia-director-fears-trump-havoc-after-election/3676392001/

If he was calling this in October and it has been all over social media complete with t-shirts I smell collusion and I want to know who did it.

I want whoever arranged the capital police response to be brought to justice as well.

Nancy and co need to find out. On another note one of my states representatives was "overwhelmingly selected as the next chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee," which includes funding for the Capitol police and she is very, very angry about this. https://appropriations.house.gov/news/press-releases/delauro-ryan-announce-appropriations-committee-review-of-law-enforcement

Lauren F**king Boebert (R-QAnon) has been in Congress for all of five minutes, tweeted "1776" on the morning of Jan. 6.   Then she live tweeted Nancy Pelosi's whereabouts while they were under assault:

"We are locked in the House chambers."

Then

"The Speaker has been removed from the Chamber."

I sure wish she would face the consequence of not being put on any committees.

Good grief! You are way too lenient!

She deliberately put the life of the Speaker of the House, the second in line for the presidency, in danger during a bloody siege.

She should be expelled from the chamber immediately and prosecuted for her actions.

If you or I did something like that, do you think we could just get away with it?

His not so veiled incitement should also be cause for expulsion.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I think you may have too much faith in the American justice system. The rich, powerful, and white rarely face consequences matching the severity of their actions. I hope they do this time, but as an American it won't shock me when/if they don't.

Oh, I agree with you. I was just stating what I believe should happen. It's a sad thing to have to say, but like you, I have my doubts if they actually will.

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) facing censure for his "taking down names and kicking ass" speech

https://www.al.com/news/2021/01/mo-brooks-facing-censure-resolution-in-house-of-representatives.html

Spoiler

Congress introduced a censure resolution against U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks on Monday, an effort to deliver a punishment against the Huntsville congressman for his raucous comments at a pro-Trump rally hours before protesters briefly took control of the U.S. Capitol.

The resolution came from New Jersey Congressman Tom Malinowski and Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, both Democrats, and states that Brooks’ comments to the crowd “encouraged and incited violence against his fellow members of Congress as part of an assault on the United States Capitol.”

Four people died amid the storming of the Capitol, including a Capitol police officer. Law enforcement has said the protesters were seeking to stop Congress from approving the election results certifying Joe Biden as president.

The House on Monday also introduced an article of impeachment against Trump.

In an interview on CNN on Monday, Malinowski described the censure resolution as “serious first step.” Malinowski is also seeking to investigate if Brooks or other members of Congress colluded with protesters.

Malinowski said he does not have evidence that Brooks was in contact with the Trump supporters who stormed the nation’s Capitol. Brooks was among congressional leaders seeking to reject election results in several swing states with the objective of delivering Trump a second term.

There has been no evidence presented of widespread voter fraud.

“I don’t have answers and I’m not going to accuse anyone of something that serious without evidence,” Malinowski said. “There have been accusations made, including from some of the rioters on social media, who said they were in contract with particular members (of Congress) and that they had planned the storming of the Capitol with them. I don’t know if it’s true. I’m not going to censure or expel someone based on a supposition.”

In a text message to AL.com, Brooks defended his standing as an elected official in the state legislature and Madison County Commission as well as Congress -- saying he has a “perfect record” in following ethics laws.

“Over 34 years of public service, I have a 100 percent perfect record of complying with all applicable ethics laws,” Brooks said. “That record will not change.”

Fox News reporter Chad Pergram first reported on the prospect of a Brooks censure on Sunday. Pergram said on Twitter than the House has only censured 23 members in its history. The most recent was New York Congressman Charles Rangel in 2010.

A censure requires only a majority vote, which may well be achieved by the Democrat-controlled House, and is considered a less severe penalty than expulsion, which would require a two-thirds vote of House members.

Brooks was one of two congressmen who spoke at the Save America rally near the White House on the morning of Jan. 6. The Malinowski/Schultz resolution cites several comments Brooks made in the speech, including:

“Today is a time of choosing and tomorrow is a time of fighting,” Brooks said. “Today is also a day of revelation and separation. Today, the curtain will be pulled back and American patriots will learn by their votes which Republican senators and congressmen have the courage to fight for our America. Today, by their votes, Americans will learn which Republican congressmen and senators love their bourbon, love their cigars, love their prestige, love their personal power, love their special interest group money more than they love America.

“Today is the day American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass,” Brooks said.

Brooks last week told AL.com that he would “make no apology” for his comments -- which was also noted in the Malinowski/Schultz resolution.

The resolution calls for Brooks to stand in the well of the House chamber “for the pronouncement of censure” and Brooks would be censured “with the public reading of this resolution by the Speaker (Nancy Pelosi).”

Malinowski said on CNN he expected the House to pass the censure resolution and that he anticipated some House Republicans to vote in support of the discipline as well.

“If the House goes to censure (Brooks), and I believe we will, the congressman will be forced to stand in the well in the House and hear the resolution read,” Malinowski said. “It will be a scarlet letter. It will be a vote of condemnation of his colleagues. I’m quite certain many Republicans will vote with us on this. But I think this is a first step … we need to take a broader look at whether he and potentially other members did more than just say outrageous things.”

Schultz accused Brooks of aiding the president in inciting the angry mob.

“Not only did Congressman Brooks’ fuel an insurrection against the body he serves in, his words helped spark chaos, destruction, injuries and death,” Schultz said in a statement. “Censure seems too trifling a punishment in this horrific case, but it’s the minimal level of accountability Congressman Brooks should face from the same Congress he goaded rioters to assault.”

Trump supporters forced their way into the Capitol as a joint session was Congress was meeting to formally approve the Electoral College results -- the final step finalizing the election of Biden. Brooks led a congressional movement to challenge those results, becoming last month the first member of Congress to say he would launch a protest in several election swing states.

There has been no evidence presented of widespread misconduct during the election, according to Trump ally and former U.S. Attorney General William Barr. Dozens of court filings by the Trump campaign were quickly dismissed in both state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

After the riots in the Capitol, Alabama’s House Republicans voted in favor of rejecting the election results in Arizona and Georgia. Both measures failed in lopsided votes.

In addition to the censure resolution, the left-leaning Campaign for Accountability has called for Brooks to be expelled from Congress due to his comments at the Trump rally.

In a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics, the CfA called for an investigation into Brooks to determine if he broke federal law “by inciting a riot as part of a seditious conspiracy to use force to prevent Congress from carrying out its Constitutional and statutory duties to count the votes of the Electoral College.”

In a press release accompanying the letter, CfA Executive Director Michelle Kuppersmith said, “It’s hard to imagine anything that brings greater discredit to the House than a member of Congress – who has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution – inciting an angry mob to violently protest against the legitimate results of a democratic election. Whether or not Rep. Brooks is charged criminally for his actions, he must be expelled from Congress for his role inciting the insurrection.”

Brooks dismissed the complaint from CfA, alluding to the 2017 shooting at the Republican softball practice in northern Virginia. Brooks was not injured and assisted others at the practice in attending to Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise, who was seriously wounded by a gunshot in the hip.

“Once you become a potent force blocking socialist efforts, attacks like these become just another day at the office,” Brooks said. “The so-called Committee for Accountability can attack away. I will not hesitate in my efforts to stop evil and dictatorial socialism in its tracks.

“Socialists have already tried to assassinate me on the ball field. This is nothing compared to that!”

I'm ashamed this POS is my Congressman!  Censure is not good enough.  He should face criminal charges!
