Soooo apparently Whitmer has said no to motorized boats, which super pissed off a classmate's husband. She posted a video of him in his motorboat, on what seems to be their own private pond, with the caption "take that governor! [cry-laugh emojis]"

Most people thought it was funny, but these two comments stood out to me:
"I’m about ready to fire that governor and I never get political"
Because... how dare she try to keep you and your family safe? I looked up the reasons for the no motorboat order, and it made sense to me. It reminds me of how people reacted to the garden centers of big box stores being ordered to close; rather than educate themselves, they just railed against how small businesses were going to suffer (actually, they would be doing more business!) and how it's absurd they can't buy gardening supplies in such uncertain times (see again, small businesses are still open!)
I remember in school how we would get privileges taken away if someone misbehaved. Well, this is the same strategy here. Also, some people have to have 'stay home' spelled out for them... I guess that husband wasn't thinking about the resources taken away from patients if he should have an accident whilst boating, and the potential exposure EMTs, etc. would face.
It sucks, but it's not forever: so grow up and act like an adult at least in front of your kids.

"You sir are a great American! Gretchen is mad, but our founding fathers would be proud"
Really. They would be proud you... took your own boat on your own water? Yeah, that sure is sticking it to the governor. They clearly aren't thinking about anyone except themselves. I also doubt Whitmer is mad; but it is her job to try and see the state through a crisis, and that's what she's trying to do.

And they are so Christian they attend church every week and are looking forward to Jesus returning 'soon'. I don't get it.

Are they? Maybe I've misunderstood (entirely possible!) but I was under the impression that all nurseries were considered non-essential, not just the sections in big box stores.

The month of April is normally a busy time for Four Season Nursery in Leelanau County.

But this year is different.

Right now the nursery is closed because like many other businesses, nurseries aren't considered essential under Governor Gretchen Whitmer's "Stay Home Stay Safe" order.

Brian Zimmerman, the owner of Four Season Nursery says people are usually getting their gardens ready in April so he normally sells a lot of mulch, compost, and bark.

He says he agrees with the governor though that nurseries aren't an essential business.

"Is she right in not allowing this to be done? It's not essential so in that respect I have to say yes she's doing the right thing. I don't particularly like it but she's doing the right thing."

“For many growers, if they’re not allowed to sell the plants already growing in greenhouses, it will mean a complete loss and an entire year without income for both the owners and their employees,” Sebolt said. “Our growers simply would like to be able to get their product into the hands of those who need it.”

“We certainly want to respect safe distancing CDC guidelines and we want people to be safe,” she said. “We think there are ways it can be done and still allow these retailers to bring some revenue in.”

She said the association’s stance is that Michigan retailers should have the same rights as restaurants to safely provide goods to customers via curbside pickup or delivery

Saunders said his business typically does 50-50 sales between retail and wholesale customers. He said the greenhouse has been closed to in-person business since the original stay at home order went into effect, but he was still able to sell to Michigan wholesalers.

But with garden centers across the state now closed, he’s limited to selling to out-of-state wholesalers. Still, the Mitten State is where he gets most of his business.

“It’s going to bring in some revenue, but unless we’re allowed to sell in Michigan, it’s really gonna be tough for all the greenhouses that are located in Michigan,” he said.

Saunders was one of many farmers and Michiganders to send a letter to the state government, asking that the stay-at-home order be adjusted to include plants as an essential product.

For the most part, I agree with the order, but I do think nurseries should be able to do low/no contact options like curbside pickup. Limit the number of customer slots per day or whatever you need to do to cut down on the number people out on the roads, etc.

Another day, another douche cannon

Quote

Police are looking for a Florida man who stiffed several restaurants by ordering pizzas — saying that they were to be delivered to law enforcement and hospitals — but never paying for them.

Authorities said they also are considering whether to charge the man with a hate crime because in subsequent calls to the pizzerias he made "statements about Italians and wished they would be afflicted with coronavirus," police said Friday.

More than a dozen restaurants in South Brunswick, Montgomery, Plainsboro and West Windsor lost several thousand dollars.

Police said Sudeep Khetani, 34, who has been charged with theft, used a service to hide his real number.

Check out the "Michiganders Against Excessive Quarantine" Facebook page if you want to read post after post of people complaining nonstop about how mistreated they are.  It is quite something!

People are screaming about impeaching Whitmer, recalling Whitmer, and her being a one-term governor. They claiming she is auditioning to be Vice President. They also think Trump can put her in line and are tweeting Trump.

Also, a bunch of covidiots are planning to drive to Lansing and jam up the roadways on Tuesday. It is planned for noon sharp.

I learned last night that you can order gardening supplies from the big box stores online and pick it up at the stores. I heard Lowes offers curbside orders and will load them in your car for you.

From Yahoo:
The Michigan order, which went into effect at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, specifically requires stores larger than 50,000 square feet to close areas dedicated to carpeting, flooring, furniture, garden centers, plant nurseries, or paint.

Sounds like smaller stores are fine? But apparently the order came about because people were getting bored staying home and decided to head to the stores to browse... and the Yahoo commenters aren't doing much to restore my faith in humanity. Good grief Americans are paranoid!

@Ali - I hope no one they live with is harmed in the process, but is it wrong I hope those idiots get COVID-19 and find out that no, it's really not the same as the flu? People are being very selective about what they hear.

I'm pretty sure that smaller stores were barred under the original order, and continue to be. The updated order simply specifies that big box garden/nursery departments are included as well.

From Crain's Detroit Business:

Quote

Independent retail garden centers, those that grow and sell their products on site, were essentially barred from public sales by the first executive order, although big box stores such as Home Depot and Lowe's could continue to sell products from their garden centers. Under the new executive order Whitmer signed Thursday, box stores must cordon off garden centers and plant nurseries.

I was trying to figure out how to figure out if nurseries were closed (definitely not asking my mom; don't want an earful about how they're under communist rule!) so I checked the local nursery's FB page, and they're open an essential business with curbside delivery and no browsing. ?‍♀️

Weird, I'm on the west side of the state, and there was a big story on Grand Rapids news a couple of nights ago where growers complained that they weren't considered essential, and worried they wouldn't even be able to do curbside service.

Quote

Now that Easter weekend is here, it’s the time that many people start planting their gardens.

But under the current state restrictions, garden centers are not allowed to sell products.

Five generations of Ludemas have grown and sold vegetables, plants and flowers on Eastern Avenue, south of 28th Street SE, surviving wars and depressions.

But the order keeping them from selling during the busiest time of the year threatens to end all that.

“It’s terrifying,” said Allison Ludema, part of that fifth generation.

***

“This is their income for the entire year is beginning right now and will occur over the next six to eight weeks,” said Audrey Sebolt, horticultural specialist with the Michigan Farm Bureau.

Greenhouses and garden centers can still grow and tend, but can’t sell — even though owners report getting hundreds of calls a day asking for products.

“If retail garden centers are not allowed to be considered essential, it will be devastating for this industry,” Sebolt said. “They’re showing pictures of their garden centers and they all look beautiful right now, but all the doors are closed with signs saying: sorry, we can’t open to the public.”

Quote

So now, the state Farm Bureau is appealing to the governor to allow for limited contact sales either through delivery or curbside pickup at least by the beginning of May.

WoodTV Article

The Crain's article does mention using curbside to skirt the order though, so I'm fairly confused.

Quote

Earlier this week, Barson's Greenhouse on Merriman Road in Westland was serving customers from its parking lot — co-owner Joe Barson called it "curbside service" in the vein of services marijuana retailers are allowed to offer under the executive order — to skirt around the nonessential order.

Here's an archive.org link that might get around Crain's paywall for anyone interested: Crain's Business Detroit

I'm all for the big box store ban, honestly. A friend's daughter works at Home Depot, and has been saying that under the original order it was just basically wall to wall older people wandering the aisles for hours, apparently for lack of anything better to do. In many cases, she'd recognize the same ones day after day. I do feel sympathy for the smaller greenhouses though, and was hoping they'd somehow be able to sell responsibly. It's just such a huge waste of resources otherwise. Glad to hear that at least some seem to be doing that.

OMG!! Me too! I mean, now I live in Seattle, but my family is still in the southwest corner of MI!

Per the Garden Centre, they are:

Spoiler

Not allowing family or group shopping.
No browsing
Higher frequency of cleaning especially in high-touch areas
Register equipment is sanitized after each customer
Implemented curbside pick-up and grocery delivery
Suspending bottle and other returns, as well as not permitting use of personal bags.
They're also planning to move their flower section outside

Ironically, my mother has just begun texting me about how Whitmer is over-stepping! We have these articles from the bastion of journalism excellence, Gateway Pundit "Michigan's Democrat Governor THREATENS All Doctors and Pharmacists who Prescribe or Dispense Hydroxychloroquine for Coronavirus Patients" ("Crazed Democrat Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer prohibited big box retailers from in-person sale of seeds because according to her, food is non-essential."), "And There It Is... Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Bans Buying US Flags During Lockdown"

I tried to explain that buying a flag isn't essential right now, and if she needs one ASAP, she can order it online, but she firmly believes if the store offers it and she wants it, she should be able to buy it.

I also noticed the Garden Centre is still open and the local hardware store also seems to be (neither are big box stores) so if she has a leaking toilet or whatever, she can still get stuff there, but nope. I'm amazed and chagrined that my own mother can't see the fear-mongering in those headlines...

My god you can’t fix stupid.

Reading the article it looks like they're trying to hold it after restrictions have lifted, and will shift the date if they're still in place in June. I hope they can run at least the senior prom, which does seem to be a major cultural thing (I'm judging totally from movies and posts on here), as long as they can do it in a safe way - and don't discriminate against certain students.

That's strange, I checked one of my local nurseries, and while they did attempt curbside pickup for a few days, they say they're currently closed per the governor's order.

Fortunately, my immediate family members have been pretty mellow about the whole thing. I was raised by anti-consumerist types, one for hippie-ish reasons, the other just out of inherent cheapness :pb_lol:

He's actually in his glory, his standard curmudgeonly "people go shopping too damn much" rant has been validated beyond his wildest dreams!

Then I made the mistake of reading the comments on a local news site, and thanked the good lord Rufus that my family is *comparatively* sane.

"Now that lawn services are cancelled, I can imagine a lot of elderly people or people with other health conditions attempting to mow their lawns and suffering potential deadly heath problems. Whomever cancelled those lawn services are responsible for any of these health problems.

I also saw an elderly gentleman on the roof of his house attempting to fix a leak. He said he tried to call someone to do it, but the Governor had issued orders shutting down these professionals. After I walked away I saw him fall off the roof."

Sure you did, lady. Sure you did.

Please tell me someone asked if she rang medical services and provided first aid etc. Just, you know, to help her add details to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative...

Sadly, not a chance.

It's in the comment section of this article if you want the full-batshit rant about how Whitmer sits in her mansion "judging me and my family" :pb_rollseyes:

It's under the name "Mary Sue". I think she's also blaming Whitmer for her basement flooding, and giving her FIL a heart attack....

Of course it is. Mary Sue. Oh dear.

I love how the governor is essentially omnipotent in their eyes, and choosing to flood her basement in an act of petty mischief.

Then again, I'd be tempted too...

Hmm. I just checked the Garden Centre, and they haven't posted anything different... maybe they're a smaller building? They also have the grocery and the non-grocery section in different areas that would be easy to block off.

You're lucky! Everything is a conspiracy theory with my mom.

Last month, Glenn ignored guidance to avoid gatherings and declared "God is larger than this dreaded virus" before his congregation.

Padma Lakshmi Claps Back at Haters Who Criticized Her for Ditching Her Bra — by Wearing Two

Padma Lakshmi has clever response to haters who criticized her for not wearing a bra

Padma Lakshmi is cooking in comfort.

The Top Chef host, who’s been sharing a few recipes while cooped up inside amid the coronavirus pandemic, told Internet trolls to focus on the food — not her choice of quarantine cooking attire — in an Instagram post on Monday.

“I got some comments last time that it was immoral for me to not wear a bra in my own kitchen during the quarantine,” Lakshmi, 49, captioned a video of herself cooking lasagna with white ragu. “So those people should be happy to note that I’m wearing two today ?. But seriously, let’s not police women’s bodies in 2020 ok?”

The video that appears to have garnered the backlash was posted over the weekend, when Lakshmi made chicken tagine while wearing a gray knit tank dress sans bra.

In response to the negative comments on the post, the chef wore two blue sports bras with a pair of navy blue sweatpants in a new video shared on Monday.

The Bravo star’s fans and followers defended her in the comment section, with many loving the fact that she’s not wearing uncomfortable undergarments during the pandemic.

“Immoral ?. I literally made dinner tonight with no pants,” one Instagram user joked. A second person wrote, “Love your videos! Also, I’m pretty sure you can wear whatever the hell you want in your own house!❤️

“No bras is one of the best (only good) things about quarantine,” a third fan added.

This isn’t the first time Lakshmi has been totally relatable when it comes to her body.

On the Emmys red carpet last year, the reality host said she was a little heavier than usual — but she wasn’t bothered by the added curves.

“I haven’t had time to diet so I’m about 146 lbs. right now, but I’m okay,” she told Us Weekly. “I’m lucky because I gain weight exponentially, like everywhere. So I don’t care.”

“I was just happy there was a dress this pretty that fit,” she said of her baby blue, high-neck gown. “And at the end of the day it’s just about feeling comfortable. I am done trying to squeeze my bum into something that is too small. I don’t care — it shouldn’t be about what I look like at this point in my career.”

When Lakshmi was asked if she wears shapewear, the former model said she finds it “very constricting.”

“It’s fine. I mean, I don’t even have a bra on, so. I just think the female body is beautiful in its natural state,” she said. “I don’t believe that we all have to do things to make it smooth and beautiful. At the end of the day, who cares?”

When I got back to Graf on my bike ride today some cannons of douche were there with their UTVs.  About half a dozen of them.  Obviously not all from the same family.  I hate being a snitch but I let the sheriff's department know about this cause I don't want these aforementioned cannons of douche to get the trail and county parks all shut down because they can't follow the fucking rules.  I also sent the local UTV lobbying group a nasty gram asking if they were trying to get parks and trails shut down and to knock that shit off.

We're up in the part of the state where all gatherings outside immediate family are generally prohibited.  I'm going to hop out on a fucking limb here and guess they were all Branch Trumpvidians.
