Catholic Priest 'Pedophilia Doesn't Kill Anyone' After Barring Pro-Choice Legislators From Communion

Ugh

Quote

A priest in Rhode Island has defended his decision to ban all lawmakers who voted in favor enshrining abortion protections under state law from receiving communion at his parish.

Reverend Richard Bucci made national news last week after he declared that every legislator who voted last year to pass the bill codifying the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision will also not be allowed to act as witnesses to marriage, godparents, or lectors at weddings, funerals or any other church function.

Bucci has now doubled down his defense on the ban while hitting out at those who raised issues of child abuse within the Catholic church to attack it.

"We're not talking about any other moral issue where somebody's making a comparison between pedophilia and abortion," Bucci told WJAR. "Well, pedophilia doesn't kill anyone, and this does."

This is why I left the Roman church in a goddamn nutshell and why I will never return.

I've got a suggestion about what this priest should go do but it's not anatomically possible.

Fuck Father Bucci with a chainsaw!

Besides, he's wrong.  Pedophilia absolutely does kill actual living breathing people.  No, not all the time, but the devastation of abuse does drive some to suicide.  Then there's the trauma that suvivors have to endure.

Why the hell does that Catholic church gets their collective panties in a twist over an issue that the Bible is completely silent on other than to control women?

@47of74,  amen, sister on why you left the church.

Are there even any lawmakers in his parish? Or is he just trying to get his name in the news?

I think he's hoping Lord High Raymond Burke will be Pope next and will make him a Cardinal because of his reich to life dumb fuckery.

The problem with the political climate now is that every dumb, mean-spirited person with an agenda thinks they have the right to impose that agenda on everyone else.  The diocese ought to send someone to sit Bucci down and make him watch "Spotlight" over and over and over until he gets a clue.

I get the feeling having someone sit Bucci down and make him watch Spotlight wouldn’t be all that effective. It would be like the rich dude’s family in Luke 16:31

I burst into tears reading this.  I thought all my anger at the church had burned out and there was nothing left for them but that hollowed out numbness they're so good at inflicting.  But this is crushing.

To this priest and the priest that told me being sexually assaulted as a preschooler was "within the natural order" - screw you and screw everyone who agrees with you, sympathizes with you, or makes excuses for you.  You have zero understanding of either abortion or pedophilia.

I knew we were in trouble when the phrase "politically correct" started being used.  Its use still infuriates me.  "I'm know this isn't politically correct but..." and then what follows is some rude, coarse, racist, bigoted, and/or generally asshole-ish statement.  When you have a mass of people saying that you no longer have to be respectful or polite, you have a problem.

He who controls the language controls the debate.  For example:  Feminism is merely a belief that women are equal to men - not the same as, not better than, just equal to.  Rush started using "feminazi" and everyone started running from the idea of feminism.  And equating socialism to communism is beyond stupid.  Most of this country is involved in one form of socialism or another:  medicare, public libraries, public roads, etc., etc., ad nauseum.  But apparently now "socialism is bad!" and education is bad and thinking is bad and up is down.

And now the church thinks birth control and abortion are worse than pedophilia.

We have always been at war with Eastasia.

I just watched "You Were Never Really Here" on Amazon.  Dark, independent movie where Joaquin Phoenix deals with pedophiles who are trafficking little girls by smashing their heads in with a ball peen hammer.

I thought it was an appropriate response.

Add my husband and me to the list of folks who are no longer RC partly  because of this very issue, among so many others.

It's one of the many reasons I have completely given up on all organized religion, no matter what stripe.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and men who think they have power over people's souls can apparently do some twisted shit.  And the hierarchy/organization covers their tracks, always.  Fuck y'all, I'm out.

I left the church 10 years or so ago. Hubby took a while longer then also left.  Will never go back.

I actually think the coverup is more damaging than the actual crime because it perpetuates it. We were unchurched for about 15 years, but in recent years joined a Unitarian Fellowship. It just feels right and aligns with our belief systems.

Reich To Life!  I love that and will be using it from now on. Thank you.

I sure don’t like religion.  Private Spiritually is good but I have no respect for religion and it’s bull crap.  God in a box.  Screw it.

Damn right it does. I can give him the names of the 3 young men who took their lives (and several others who didn’t but were forever changed) due to the priest in my hometown. These were kids that I went to school with - they had a lot to offer the world. One day the priest was just gone and nobody knew where he went. It didn’t come out until years later.

Now, the weak walk-back non-apology:

https://www.providencejournal.com/news/20200211/west-warwick-priest-clarifies-comment-on-pedophilia-maintains-abortion-is-worse

Quote

A West Warwick parish priest said he could have expressed himself more clearly when he said in a television interview that unlike abortion, “pedophilia doesn’t kill anyone.”

The Rev. Richard Bucci of Sacred Heart Church said Tuesday that he’s well aware that victims of sexual abuse suffer immensely. He knows about the toll of child sexual abuse, he said, because he has supported victims and because he was the first one to blow the whistle on an abusive priest.

“I should have made it clearer that I wasn’t saying there was no suffering to the person who is abused physically,” Father Bucci said Tuesday. “Especially a child who puts their trust in faith, whether it be a priest, a rabbi, an uncle, a parent. That’s absolute.”

Quote

But Bucci said he did not mean to suggest that pedophilia was not a grave offense against children. He also acknowledged Tuesday that sexual abuse of children can be fatal: He knows of one victim personally who died by suicide after suffering abuse, he said.

“It kills the spirit, it kills childhood,” Bucci said. “I was focusing on the fact that there is no future at all for an unborn child who is aborted, whereas a child who is molested, with a great deal of effort and prayer and therapy and medicine, can at least lead a life that can accomplish things.”

Bucci said he was the first person to report the Rev. William O’Connell to the state police when they served together as priests in Bristol in the early 1980s. He did so anonymously, he said, but nothing was done about it. O’Connell, now dead, was eventually arrested and charged, but only after other victims came forward, Bucci said.

Maybe Father Bucci needs to be investigated. His views might have been acted on.

Add me to the former RC crew. Maybe we could have a party or something?

I remember a priest once told me if all the ex Catholics formed their own denomination it’d be about 30 million people. About the second largest in the country.

I’m down for a party for all us ex RCs. Especially if stouts are served.
