Sierra 4: She Speaks More Spanish than the Vuolos and Dillards

99 taps to get through the latest Instagram story (I obviously didn’t watch it but it looked like she filmed an entire shopping trip maybe??) I think this is a new record. Even the most active accounts I follow fail to come anywhere close to Sierra-level usage.

I watched some of it. She took the 3 eldest boys on a grocery shopping trip to Sam's Club where they were "in charge" of the budget and items but she micro managed them the entire time. Their budget was $300 but they went a couple over and then immediately went for Icees and pizza.

I guess this was either her way of educating them, spending alone time with them or a combo of both?

@Sairrr was not exaggerating the endlessness. The little dots along the top are each post:

That's the whole list? $300 worth? There's no fruits or vegetables or milk! I can't stand to check the whole instagram, but there must be several more pages.

Personally, I don’t put vegetables on my list. I just walk through that section and pick out what’s seasonal/on sale/looks good. She may have bought some. Of course if the kids did the shopping, they should have been on the list.

Confession - I watched the whole thing.
The reason they went over is because 1) she decided since she budgeted $10 for yogurt and yogurt was $5.88 (or something similar) they could get 2 and 2) spray olive oil (cooking spray) she budgeted $9 for and it was $3.88 (or similar) so they got 2 (really 2 packages of 2 each).  So if she had gotten the originally planned 1 yogurt and 1 (package of 2) spray oil that she okayed they would have been under budget.  (so Sierra is why they were over, not the boys).

The boys had specific roles.  Oldest was the budget guy (and had to be reminded repeatedly that wasn't on the list and therefore not budgeted for he also handled the cash/check out process.  Middle (of the three oldest) was in charge of the list (but had to be reminded that he was only in charge of the list and not to do the job of the next kid).  Youngest (of the three oldest) was the getter - so it was his job to get the item and put it in the cart.  Sierra was there for advice/guidance (and going over on the budget).  I assumed it was a lesson of some sort (reminder - SROTDRT)

Commentary - for a family with a SAHM holy cow that was a lot of processed, pre-packaged food.

I feel like this probably isn’t the only place they shop. I watch a lot of large families do groceries on YouTube because that fascinates me for whatever reason, and they usually do a Sams/Costco and then an Aldi or whatever they prefer run. In my experience with Sam’s, you have to watch them. Even with items in bulk they’re not always cheaper than buying somewhere else. Also if you’re planning a specific meal you don’t always need a Sam’s sized bag of a certain vegetable to make that thing.

Adding they were over about $2.50 and that was pretty great budgeting. I can’t snark here. The pizza and icees were also super cheap because Sam’s sells that stuff for next to nothing. Like those huge slices are usually under $2 each. It wasn’t breaking the bank.

I do multiple stores for savings even though it's just the 3 of us.  Aldi first, then Food4Less, then Jewel or Mejer (mainstream grocery stores) for whatever they didn't have at the first two.

It's my little routine and all are within 2 miles of my house.  I drive a Mustang so not a lot of trunk room so when I do weekly or bi-weekly shopping I just pop home between stores for the kids to unload the trunk.

Multiple stores here as well.  Aldi first, then Walmart or Kroger (or both), depending on sales and coupons.  And occasionally Dollar Tree for very specific things.  I hate shopping for clothes, but I find long grocery trips oddly therapeutic.

I hate grocery shopping...but I do love putting it all away and organizing when I get up.  Updating my inventory lists.

It always brings to mind Laura Ingalls Wilder when she and Manly first married and she had full flour and sugar bins along with other staples and she was just so happy in her well stocked pantry.

Yes, I am a dork.

Lately I’ve been doing Aldi and Sprouts because the latter has a lot of bulk items (oats, rice, chickpeas, etc.) and lower priced produce that help me save $$.

I love the whole process because I’m such a grocery nerd. I get really satisfied using things up too and having nothing to eat come grocery time because I take that to mean I’m using money wisely and not wasting food.

I thought I was the only one. I feel such a sense of calm and happiness when the cupboards are well-stocked and hanging on the fridge I have a list of potential meals to be made with those ingredients.

My family in Florida has multiple Publix's they go to for different things. I can get behind a Costco run and a Publix run, but not Publix A for this and Publix B for that.

I'm big on multi stores, usually Costco, Aldi, then either SuperTarget or Hy-Vee (local grocery store). When I was a SAHM I would do even more than that, I would also do multiple  Walmart's, because I had time and this Walmart had this cheaper and that Walmart had that cheaper etc. I no longer have the time or the energy to do 5 stores a week.

Sierra is nuts, and I think her frantically trying to do everything ON Instagram makes her nuttier. I actually did tell her once if she spent 1/2 as much time DOING her tasks as she did Instagraming her tasks she's have so much more time.  So apparently I'm a hater. I can't be bothered with her anymore she's gives me a headache.

I have five kids and happily pay ? instacart for Costco and delivery. It is a nightmare and exhausting - usually two carts, and even with everyone “helping”, paying for the loading and unloading and kid management is worth every penny of markup to me. When I still homeschooled a Costco day was easily half a day and had to be planned on a non school day. I didn’t watch her vids but I am tired thinking about it.

Happily, the local groceries around here offer in store prices and rewards for order online with curbside pickup, and it is a magical experience for 4.95.

Now I rarely go to the market with my kids in person - if so, it’s for one or two items. I might cry in relief. Or use the blessed hashtag? ?

That’s a lovely scene. Laura appreciated a well-fitted kitchen. Have you been to her house in Mansfield? Of course, she also had known times when the cupboard was bare, and she didn’t know that they were living on credit and the house would burn down and they would lose the farm.

Around 15 years ago, my family and I stopped at the Laura Ingalls Wilder sites in DeSmet, SD, on our way to Mount Rushmore. I enjoyed  it so much, a week after returning home (Chicago), my daughter and I headed down to Mansfield, MO, to check it out. I was in a real “bonnet head” period!

I love grocery shopping and we do go to multiple store throughout the week/month, but I plan out the trips so that I am doing something else in the area. Most of the stores are within 15 mins from my house so it isn't a huge deal, but I just wait and pick up whatever when I have to pick a kid up form baseball or something similar.

And I love Costco and shop there regularly but aside from a few staple produce items I don't buy much for fruits and veggies there. Mostly because we like a big variety of stuff and if I had to buy Costco portions some of it would go bad. We have a smaller family that Sierra but my teens probably eat a lot more than her young children.

I appreciate a stocked and organized pantry but I appreciate a good kitchen even more. It's not something child me would've expected given that I don't like to cook but by god a gas stove is the best thing ever. I can have sausage for breakfast in 5 minutes because I don't need to wait for anything to heat up. It's lovely.

The thought of driving to multiple stores makes me sweat lol. I am a one and done shopper. We don’t do Costco, though, even as a family of five.

Not even sure where there is a Costco anywhere around here. Couple of local chains within 20 miles. It's over an hour to Walmart, or Aldi's. Maybe 2 hours to a Sam's Club.

Yes, I was the one who grumbled about the lack of public transportation in our area. Definitely rural.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
