Some interesting choices there, but I wonder whether she's really aware of the body of work of some of these artists. Does she about about Ben Folds' "Brick" (or a bunch of his other songs) or any of Pearl Jam's other music? Or about Regina Spektor's staunchly liberal and feminist views?

It strikes me as just a bunch of stuff she likes, and that she doesn't know much about these artists. I would be much more shocked if she knew any other Pearl Jam song besides that one - it's the one song I understand someone like her knowing.

But it's certainly a long way from thinking anything with a backbeat is evil. 😂

This is someone who instagrammed herself listening to Kanye, so I think it's a pretty safe bet she's not checking their back catalogues.

I think Jinger likes the songs Jeremy likes, the same as Jinger loves Jeremy, Jeremy loves blah blah book, Jinger loves blah blah book because Jinger loves Jeremy.

Yep. This is what happens when individualism and all choice is pounded out of you, and replaced with group think.

Yeah it’s fairly common for Christians if any stripe to not listen to anything but some kind of Christian music. They argue about what’s Christian enough, of course, but that is a common standard.

I think this is probably a combination of Jeremy’s influence and some PR firm pressuring her to try to be more hip while not taking the to time to understand her fan base, history, or followers. She’s not impressing anyone with that playlist because to people like us we can see that she’s being urged in this direction without bothering to explain or understand the musical context of the artists she’s suggesting. Nobody is going to like Jinger better or forget her beliefs because she added a Regina Spektor song to a playlist. And her original base? Well a lot of them are just going to be disappointed in her or see through it as her being influenced like everyone else.

What people are looking for is a verbal explanation about the departure from her family’s beliefs, taking steps toward a growth in understanding of the world in general, or a shred of what might look like burgeoning original or critical thought.

A silly playlist someone helped you make to try to improve your image ain’t it, Jinger.

Which we have to remember that she owes that to no one in the world.  It might be nice to hear it, but religious belief is personal and one is allowed to change one's view without explaining it to anyone.

When I first saw Jinger's playlist my first thought was "wow Jeremy has an okay music taste". A lot of 00s alt/indie songs but those are good actually. I'm sure this can easily happen when a very sheltered person meets and eventually marries a more secular and wordly (at least by first look) person. At first they like everything their partner likes because they don't know anything about the pop culture that they missed growing up so if their partner likes the thing than surely the thing is good. I'm sure eventually Jinger will have her own taste in music and such but for right now she's into what Jeremy is into because Jeremy thinks it is good.

I completely agree. She doesn’t. If she wasn’t trying to make money off people and doing these weird things try to win people over, I’d say leave her alone. I don’t feel entitled to anything from any of these people especially when they’re minding their own business. I was offering what is lacking in her delivery and why it isn’t going to help her keep contracts with donut companies if those other things continue to be absent from the conversation.

She doesn't owe anyone an explanation, true.  But the world doesn't owe her money through sponsorships and TLC either.   The only reason anyone knows who she is is because of her publicized religion.

If she wants to maintain interest in her, without alienating her original fan base, she should be getting advice from someone in PR about how to present this.

The company is very pro-LGBTQ. I think they had a lot of people writing them that Jinger was not. I know that's the angle I took. I got a canned response back, but someone else got a very detailed response that confirmed they ended their relationship with Jinger.

Why does Jinger’s PR company keep getting her these contracts when there is an inevitable backlash? Why not seek out companies that align with her views? A lot of anti LBGTQ Christians would refuse to endorse companies that they perceive go against ‘God’s word’ (sic).

Of course Jinger owes nobody an explanation but as others have said- she owes her fame to her family’s beliefs and she is still profiting from it- if she has moved on then she ought to make it clear. I doubt she has- Jinger is a follower- she followed the Duggar family line and now she follows Jeremy - he may have better clothes but the seminary he attends is not teaching him to be liberal and inclusive. If Jinger wants the perks of endorsing the big brands she has to accept that she can’t be hateful of their customers - she pretty much wants it both ways.

Excellent book recommendation.

Megan Phelps-Roper is the granddaughter of Fred Phelps.

He is the former leader of the Westboro Baptist Church.

For the unfamiliar - - In the past thirty years they've gained international notoriety by picketing. Namely LGBT events "God Hates Fags" and then a spate of military funerals in the aughts.

They wound up in the Supreme Court in 2010-11 over the funeral stuff, and they won. All the 2nd gen Phelps kids are lawyers.

Megan's mom, Shirley, was the mouthpiece of the church for years. Megan was her right hand.

If you go back, this is a woman who has publicly spread more hatred than all the Duggars and Bates combined.

But in the last decade Fred Sr. Took a turn. The church needed to adapt. They took a turn and made all the men elders. Shirley was effectively neutralized.

The process of Megan's eventual departure is one of the most compelling exit stories I've ever read.

There's a point where she realizes that people are aware that she's absent from social media and the picket lines.

That's when she starts wondering if she needs to "apologize or make comments to the public"

...Interesting stuff.

It took her so so so much. It was such an epic dismantling of everything in her life. And she didn't want to leave. She tried so hard to effect a change.

We're going to be waiting for these kids a long time. The combination of family and predestination is powerful.

You never know where disillusionment can come from. Any experience or exposure to new things is good.

Jinger is still young.

I'm guilty of the same things she is in some ways. I ran off and didn't have a clear sense of myself. Relied on the wrong elements of my character and found an idiot way too early 😏 It derailed me for my 20s.

Yeah I'm not forgiving her here. Reading these memoirs slams the reality home of the difficulties involved with cult exit.

Jinger is still young.  But I doubt there is any deep change happening.  Belief change requires lots of introspection and contemplation, and it does mean a quiet period in one’s public life.  Jinger is as busy and active on social media and public life as always.  She and Jeremy may have sold their souls to god of consumerism and commercialism but I don’t believe any core beliefs are being questioned at all.

How did it become knowledge she lost it? Did she have to pull down the makeup thing early?

how many has she lost now? Is this number two or three? I know there was the donuts one and did she loose the bag or was it clothes one?

I agree and don’t forget Jinger ( and Jeremy) we’re and apparently still are prepared to take part in a fake scripted ‘reality’ show. Two examples I can think of are the Jinger flips a car episode which was a set up and the the ‘ohmygarsh Jeremy’s proposing’ when we saw the markers on the floor for them to stand and it was clearly directed. I suppose she’s used to faking stuff and the leg humpers believing it all so it may be a shock that others are more discerning.

Maybe this would be a band for Jinger’s playlist?

Cue the "suffering for Jesus" and "Christians are persecuted in the US".

Nate Phelps left the Westboro Baptist church years before his father achieved infamy. He's a big LGBT activist. I recommend his talks on You Tube.

Re: Pearl Jam. I'm not fammiliar with much of their post 90's material. When I saw they were included in Jinger's Valentine's playlist, I was scratching my head. The only 'romantic' song I could think of was a track off their first major album (Ten) called Oceans. It stirred up all kinds of sensual unrighteous feelings in this 90's teenager  (as did the glimpse of long-haired Eddie Vedder's fine ass filling out those jeans on the album cover). Then I thought of Better Man. Good song, but not exactly romantic (it's all about a woman in an abusive/dysfunctional relationship pretending she's ok with her husband's shitty behaviour).

When I saw Ed Sheeran on the list, I was hoping for Shape of You. A song with a beat about physical love... Let me reach for my pearls!

To me it's just another Duggar taking a stab at trying to connect with pop culture while being clueless.
it reminds me of Michelle saying that her family loved watching "Cheaper by the Dozen," without understanding that Lillian Galbraith was an industrial engineer with an Ivy League doctorate and a full-time professorship.  Or Joshie talking about kids "who take the little bus" with no clue what that meant--just something he'd heard that he repeated because he thought that made him seem in touch with people he'd heard talking.
I agree--I don't understand why if they want to be grifters making money as "influencers" they don't target the Duggar base. It's not like there isn't any good Christian music. They were horrified by the music when they went to the trainer's church, but there's still plenty that they could shill. the Reith family, for one. Plenty of good southern (white) bands. And there have to be where they live a ton of bakeries that refuse to make cakes for same-sex couples, modest clothing lines, Christian film festivals, Christian stores...

Lillian Gilbreath also did the first research on feminine hygiene  products.

Frank, jr, one of the authors of Cheaper by the Dozen was a longtime editor and columnist of the Charleston, SC Post and Courier where he wrote a column under the nom de plume Ashley Cooper.  One of those columns was very pro-choice.  (I remember reading it and it was brilliant.)  His brother Robert Moller Gilbreath was a legislator in New Hampshire who opposed a life begins at conception bill.  Their sister Ernestine who was the co-author of Cheaper by the Dozen was involved with Right to Read, an anti-censorship group.

Frank Gilbreth was also openly critical of organized religion. He made no pretense of going to church.
