This is a reminder that we are not here to dox the AMA writer. But rip her ridiculous story all to hell. I mean rip it. But just don’t dox her.

Maybe this person grew up in ATI and is indulging in a lot of speculation, but she's also indulging in a lot of "I was so SMART I had to leave, even though I'm so BEAUTIFUL too and was highly prized."

Sure, lady.

Yeah, I think I sprained something rolling my eyes with that one.

I have a question for our more seasoned Reddit FJ'ers.  Is it in their board culture to investigate an AMA if things are off or correct themselves if something is off and say something about it? Or, would they just gloss over it, on to the next thing?   This sort of thing damages credibility to a forum and real survivor's of a cult. Plus, basically plagiarism.

It depends on the specific subreddit (community/group). Some are more vigilant to begin with, others will allow someone to make increasingly interesting claims and then pretend it never happened. Media-focused subs (like those about TV shows) will verify that someone claiming to be an actor or otherwise associated with a show, give them some kind of flair/status that indicates they really are who they claim to be, and the person will either participate in an AMA or in casual conversations. The Walking Dead/Fear The Walking Dead and ANTM have a few cast members who will pop in to conversations, chat or joke around, and go back to whatever they're doing. It's easier to verify someone with a public presence (they usually do the "I'm whoeveronreddit" written on a piece of paper with a selfie) than it is to verify that someone anonymous claiming to have insider knowledge actually does, though.

What @Walking Cat Bed said.   The moderation is uneven and it depends on the individual sub.  I don't think it cares about monitoring the subs and moderators or the AMAs much.  It has to be read with care.

You have to remember that Reddit is mind-boggling ginormous and has had a chequered past.  It has a history of allowing people to post very controversial yet "legal" material on the grounds of free speech and some of it is gross.  It has had some very questionable subs.  It had to shut down quite a few  over the years.

Yes, really disgusting stuff.   IMO it is an organisational nightmare and you need to be careful about what and where you read over there.

It might have improved since Steve Huffman was reinstated as CEO.  But Reddit is user-beware, IMO.

Reddit can be a good resource if you stay small scale (I stick with a few entertainment-based subs and a few that are local or very specific, like the childfree sub). If a sub has a "community" feel, it's usually less toxic (or at least the toxic stuff isn't endorsed). Better moderated subs will deal with toxic stuff when it happens so it doesn't build up.

But the big subs and the more anonymous/"no rules" places are a hot mess and I don't even bother.

It’s super, super unlikely you’re going to run into anything like that unless you actively seek it out. You can pretty heavily curate your own experience.

Like @Walking Cat Bed said, it depends on the sub. Also some reddit communities have some serious issues with the idea of going into people’s comment history to look for inconsistencies- the entire reddit beauty community exploded a while back because of an incident involving this.

Even in the general subs, you'd have to look for the questionable stuff. Most of it would be people from those creepy corners acting normal in other discussions.

For example: I refrained from continuing a conversation with a childfree guy because his post history was ALL OVER redpill and thedonald (and not in "you guys are wrong" ways). There's overlap between the shitty personalities and any interests, honestly, but especially something a bit more niche. And I've told dudes who show up in childfree talking about how it's unfair that men are expected to provide for their own offspring (and make excuses about not using condoms/hiding birth control/being misogynist dicks) to go back to their own corners of the internet.

While reading an AMA on motorcycle clubs ( like Hells Angels type) , someone commented with a link to another and it was the porn star one. So, of course dumb me goes for it.  The first was ok, she was a popular one and it was honest but definitely done to promote herself.  So, dumb me went for another. Holy crap. I will never read about that topic again. I'm still traumatized, that poor woman.  In general,  I find Reddit to be weird and not quite my thing.  I like FJ. I really appreciate our culture here and the checks and balances!  Thanks for the education guys!

No, no!  I didn't want to put anyone off Reddit forever.  As others have said, it has its positive communities and you can stay in safe territory.  Just take care.  And take several bushels of salt with you.

The internet is a double-edged sword.  Reddit is huge.  The moderation varies. So does the 'verification."

As with everything internet, enter and participate at your own risk.

That's all. :)

Did you guys know that the inventor of reddit is married to Serena Williams?  I had no idea until recently but there's a funny clip about how they met - Alexis Ohanian talked about it on the Colbert show and it's on youtube.

I like reddit a lot for some things but like any open community there are weirdos.  I started following a sub that posts local news information and it seemed friendly but then got really hostile over a certain issue.. which in retrospect wasn't that weird because it was a slightly controversial issue but it just seemed to go from zero to hostile name calling more quickly than if it were a group of random locals with differing views standing around on a street corner talking about the issue.

Did you know SW was raised Jehovah’s Witness and still considers herself one? Although she doesn’t seem devout. But follows some of the rules. Like not celebrating her daughter’s birthday. It’s amazing to me how strong a hold JWs have on the people raised in it.

I heard that. To not celebrate anything, even birthdays, sounds like an utterly miserable existence. Of course, there are other problematic things about the JWs, but that’s one of the suckier things. Even the Maxwells celebrate Christmas!

Not entirely true. They have 'parties.' Kid parties. Bounce houses, lots of gifts, etc. Totally not a birthday or celebration, though. ?

There are certain things they’ll celebrate(wedding anniversaries, graduations, the birth of a child).  Just not the anniversary of a birth, or those pesky pagan holidays.

The above shows the deleted comments - very interesting!

A not-so-deleted comment I noticed from Jay's Motorcycle:

"Awwww - this is so kind. Thank you! Talking about this is helpful to me emotionally, but also for the project I'm trying to get funded. It's difficult when you were so immersed in it to understand an outsider's perspective.

All of you are giving me a lot and I'm grateful for it <3"

I wonder what she wants funded. I appreciate that she didn't put up a Go Fund Me for herself or whatever but I wonder if we'll ever see anything like that from her...

Nothing much else is catching my eye - some deleted comments about Brooke Arnold, linking to the podcast about her, and the one mentioned above about Pa Keller.

@PlentyOfJesusFishInTheSea  TY for posting that link. What's interesting is that most mod deletes were done quickly enough to not get saved. So, they were interfering constantly.  Why? Didn't fit the narrative of the AMA They set up?!  Gross!  The commentors that deleted didn't even have gnarly posts or anything.  All strange I tell you!

ETA:  If I did an AMA, I'd be kinda pissed if I was censored.  Maybe the mod and Jay are the same person.  Someone said socks are easy to do and no one cares so, could be. ?

There are heaps of others which were edited or deleted but not showing up in that removeddit link. This is just one example.

I’ll have to post a reply in 10 minutes with the edited version because I can’t figure out how to post photos under a spoiler box on my phone And there are more than 2 images.

This is the original.

And this is the edited version. Obviously, all details including the 20+ year comment were taken out. There are similar ones where the comments about leaving 10 years ago were deleted.

That's because she didn't delete them, they were removed by moderators. I wasn't paying attention, but if you look at the screenshots on the last page, most of the deleted comments are in red, indicating that they were removed by moderators, rather than blue, which would mean they were deleted by the user. That's interesting, because it shows that she's not the one cleaning up her comments, it's the subreddit moderators. The moderators also locked the AMA thread a few hours ago.

I know this is a few days late but I found this thread from Reddit. I originally believed the AMA but someone linked me to this thread, warning me not to trust Jay, and when I went back to thank them for it their account had been deleted and the comments about how the AMA may not be reliable all removed. Something is really fishy with this. Someone is trying to cover for her I think.

So ... we can pretty much presume Jay’s Motorcycle to be bogus?  Because she/he alleges stuff about Pa Keller’s prison ministry that had me retching.  The Keller’s are not swimming in the top of the gene pool but the allegations JM made were horrific about anyone claiming to preach Christ to the incarcerated.

I don't go there super often, but the culture is more about snarking and less about analysis. I will say that they are very prone to taking rumors and speculation as fact over time. There are pieces of "information" that have come to be completely accepted when they're repeated enough. Then when those things are questioned it takes a while to sink in that they're not facts.

I love the FJ sleuthing!! And I'm super interested in all the deleted and edited comments, especially by the mods. I wonder what would be their interest in doing that.

Re: the Keller accusations and the reaction to being mildly questioned about them - that was definitely the point where I realized this poster needed a very specific kind of reaction and was searching for a particular kind of attention. That was completely over the top.

It seems super suspicious. Wouldnt be surprised if it is done by the same person that did the other AMA. But its just my opinion, i have no proof of this.

Edit 3: part of the Quiverful movement is leaving the number of children you have up to God. Birth control of any kind even if it’s to help a medical condition is viewed as going against god. However using fertility drugs/treatments is seen as using innovations sent by god

This is the only part that I find to be questionable .  IVF is usually rejected by anti-abortion Quiverfull advocates , as it entails the destruction of embryos that aren't implanted .    { https://slate.com/human-interest/2016/01/frozen-embryos-and-the-anti-abortion-activists-who-love-them.html , https://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/stevenwaldman/2009/01/vatican-statement-on-in-vitro.html ,

Quote

Quiverfull’s beliefs also do not condone any form of artificial conception, such as in-vitro fertilization. Mary Pride, a Quiverfull believer and author of the book, ‘The Way Home’, says, “You shouldn’t be unnatural in going to a fertility clinic or in trying to avoid having children by regulating when to have sex with your husband

https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/protestant-group-advocates-leaving-fertility-in-gods-hands-no-birth-control }  As to the point that birth control pills are not permitted , even to treat a medical condition . While my maternal extended family is not exactly Quiverfull , it is conservative evangelical , and my one cousin does use birth control in order to treat an ovarian cyst .  So I would imagine that as long as it has a practical application to healthcare it would be condoned , but I cannot be sure , plus YMMV .
