Mormon Massacre in Mexico - LeBarón Family

Recommended Posts

Note: there is a lot of confusion among various news outlets reporting this.  The Guardian reports that it happened along a dirt road, but the photo they include with a burned out truck is obviously on a paved road, so I don't know if that is a stock photo or a photo of the actual vehicle involved.

This is simply horrifying news.  Members of the LeBarón family,  mostly women and children including infants, were massacred on a dirt road or highway  in northern Mexico yesterday as they were going to another community to go shopping.  I don't have a sense of exactly  where this occurred; news reports just note that it was near the US-Mexico border along the Chihuahua - Sonora border,  This appeared to be a cartel hit, with some speculation that it was mistaken identity.  However, this happened as two instances along the same road; the vehicles were about 8 miles apart.

CNN quotes Alex LeBarón

Quote

"Women and children (between 14 and 10 months) were massacred, burnt alive. Mothers were screaming for the fire to stop," he said. "We are a very tight knit community, we share everything that's happening. We've been dealing with this tragedy since early yesterday...He said that there were two separate attacks on the victims, he believes, by two different groups that were part of the same cartel "most likely by accident, mistaken for their rivals..."

Geography:  Head to googlemaps.com  Enter Douglas, AZ.  Agua Prieta is on the Mexican side.

The border between Sonora and Chihuahua roughly corresponds to the Arizona - New Mexico border.   On the Mexican side, Highway 14 takes off to the southeast from Agua Prieta.  Bavispe is 150 miles southeast on Mexico Highway 14.  As the crow flies, Bavispe and Janos are not too far apart.  The Guradian reports that the massacre happened on a dirt road in two separate spots; if so, it's likely a backroad that connected these two towns.

From the New York Times:

At Least 9 Members of Mormon Family in Mexico Are Killed in Ambush

Six children were among the victims in a massacre attributed to organized crime, family members said. Other children were rescued, some of whom hid along a roadside.

Quote

Details of the attack remained murky early Tuesday, as state and local authorities struggled to determine the extent of the violence, and how exactly it unfolded.

It was unclear whether the attackers intentionally targeted the family, which has historically spoken out about the criminal groups that plague the northern border states of Sonora and Chihuahua, or whether it was a case of mistaken identity.

Julian LeBarón, a cousin of the three women who were driving the vehicles, said in a telephone interview from Bavispe, Mexico, that the women and their children had been traveling from the state of Sonora to the state of Chihuahua.

His cousin Rhonita was traveling to Phoenix to pick up her husband, who works in North Dakota and was returning to celebrate the couple’s wedding anniversary. Her car broke down, Mr. LeBarón said, and the gunmen “opened fire on Rhonita and torched her car.”

She was killed, along with an 11-year-old boy, a 9-year-old girl and twins who were less than a year old, he said.

About eight miles ahead, the two other cars were also attacked, killing the two other women, Mr. LeBarón said. A 4-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl were also killed, he said.

Family members said several children were rescued, some having hidden by the roadside to escape the attackers.

“Six little kids were killed, and seven made it out alive,” Mr. LeBarón said.

The women had married men from La Mora, which is in the municipality of Bavispe in Sonora. The surviving children were being taken by helicopter from Bavispe, the town closest to the La Mora community, to a hospital, he said.

He expressed bewilderment over what could have precipitated the attack. “They intentionally murdered those people,” Mr. LeBarón said. “We don’t know what their motives were.”

One of the women even got out of her car, Mr. LeBarón said, and put up her hands. “They shot her point blank in the chest,” he said.

Mr. LeBarón said the family had not received any threats, other than general warnings not to travel to Chihuahua, where they typically went to buy groceries and fuel.

More detailed reporting from The Guardian, which includes a photo of one of the burned out trucks, but as noted above, I don't know if this is a stock photo or an actual photo of the truck.

I have heard conflicting stories too.  Some say that it wasn't a case of mistaken identity but that the LeBaron's have been in a war with the cartel. Either way, it is horrible and senseless.  I don't agree with the communities way of life (I have read several books about them from back in the Ervil LeBaron days) but no family deserves this.  Those poor women and children.

I agree no family deserves this massacre. Sadly, with the history of the LeBaron's in that region I really wonder what did happen. Considering this all happened in Mexico, I doubt we will ever know for sure.

The yahoo article has a map of the area - they were about half way between Colonia LeBaron & Agua Prieta. image.png.0636f885a10f332882c53b172ff90999.png

@quiversR4hunting, thanks for that helpful graphic.

This just gets progressively more horrific.

I just saw GMA.  Hubs records it and we watch it later.  GMA (Good Morning America) says it was a group heading to a wedding, and they said there was a kidnapping involved, in addition to the murders. However, the Guardian article has updated quite a bit of their  information; it does not mention a kidnapping or wedding.  There was a little girl who was lost in the mountains, but was found last night.  The oldest boy hid the surviving children with brush while he went for help, and those kids were no found for quite some time; it may be they were thought to be kidnapped.

Updated info from The Guardian:

Quote

Initial accounts from local authorities and relatives of the victims differed on several key points, but it appears that the three women were travelling in three SUVs with their children when they were attacked on a remote and unpaved mountain road at around 1pm on Monday.

According to relatives, the three vehicles were travelling from the community of La Mora, Sonora toward Pancho Villa, in Chihuhua. They set out together, but one of them later fell behind because of a flat tire.

That car was the first to be found shot up and burnt out with the bodies of one woman – later identified as Rhonita LeBarón – her twin babies and two other small children dead inside.

The other two vehicles, driven by Dawna and Christina Langford, were found about 18km (11 miles) further along the road at the top of a hill.

According to a statement released by the Sonora attorney general’s office, a woman and two children were found dead in one of the cars. The third woman was found dead a few meters from the third vehicle.

Julián LeBarón, a relative of the victims, said that he reached the scene with the security forces hours later, and opened the door of one of the vehicles to find a baby still inside completely unharmed.

In an interview with Aristegui Noticias, he said it appeared most of the rest of the surviving children had walked 15km (9.3 miles) back to La Mora where they alerted the authorities.

He said one of the children said their mother had been gunned down after she got out of the car screaming at the attackers to stop shooting.

“We are very upset,” he said. “It is just impossible to understand why they would attack cars full of women and children in two separate incidents.”

Another relative, Kendra Miller, said in a Facebook post that the first news of the massacre arrived in La Mora when a 13-year-old survivor got there hours later.

“After witnessing his mother and brothers being shot dead, Dawna’s son Devin hid his 6 other siblings in the bushes and covered them with branches to keep them safe while he went for help,” she wrote. “When he took too long to return, his 9 year old sister left the remaining five to try again.”

Miller wrote that Devin’s news prompted an armed search party from the community that was soon aborted because of continual shooting in the area. She said the hidden children were not found until 7.30pm, more than six hours after the ambush. The nine-year-old was found lost in the mountains later.

And this (also from the updated Guardian article):

Quote

Both the Mexican authorities and relatives said that they believed that cartel gunmen had mistaken the convoy of vehicles for rivals from another group.

“It looks like the criminal groups disputing control of the region might have got the vehicles confused,” said Alfonso Durazo, the public security secretary.

Long and very detailed facebook post with details, and the names of those who died, as well as the survivors:

"Ryan's cousin Kendra Miller posted this update with all the details."

Quote

On the morning of November 4th, 2019, three mothers in three vehicles, with fourteen children between them, set out from LaMora, a small family community in the mountains of northeastern Sonora. Two of them to see family in Chihuahua, and one of them to pick up her husband from the airport in Phoenix, AZ. They never made it. They were ambushed by the Mexican cartels; shot, burned, and murdered in cold blood. These were innocent civilians, American citizens simply trying to live peaceful lives.

For 11 hours, their families all over Sonora, Chihuahua, and the Midwestern US waited in fear and horror for any news of possible survivors. The first vehicle was found full of bullet holes and completely ablaze. Nita and the four of her seven children she had taken on the trip were burned to mostly ashes and only a few charred bones left to identify that all five had been inside. It appeared that one tried to escape as the front passenger door was open and the remains were partially in and out of the vehicle.

On another part of the road, about 10 miles ahead, were Christina, with her baby Faith in her vehicle, and Dawna with nine children in hers *RYANS STEP MOM AND SIBLINGS*. They both were fired upon from ahead and Christina jumped out waving her arms to let the attackers know that it was women and children in the vehicles. She gave her life to try and save the rest. Dawna and two of her boys were killed in the gunfire.

After witnessing his mother and brothers being shot dead, Dawna's son Devin hid his 6 other siblings in the bushes and covered them with branches to keep them safe while he went for help. When he took too long to return, his 9 year old sister left the remaining five to try again. Devin arrived in LaMora at 5:30 pm, 6 hours after the ambush, giving the first news anyone had heard of his and Christina's families.

Devin's uncles armed themselves with guns and returned to try and find the hidden children, knowing many of them were injured. They didn't get far before realizing they would be risking death, since there had been continual shooting for hours, all over the mountains near LaMora. The group of men waited a while for reinforcements, and around 7:30, found the hidden children. They found Christina's baby Faith with the vehicle around her riddled with bullet holes. Somehow she had remained untouched, and alive. She was in her car seat, which looked to have been hurriedly placed on the floor of the vehicle by her mother for protection.

The search didn't end there. Mckenzie, the 9 year old who'd gone for help, was missing. Soldiers who'd by then arrived, and the men of LaMora and nearby towns searched for two hours in the dark until they found her around 9:30.

The five of Dawna's children who were injured were picked up by a waiting ambulance and treated at the local hospital until a helicopter sent by Mexican military came to pick them up. Their father David*RYANS DAD* who had by then arrived from Tucson, Arizona, accompanied them to be life flighted to another helicopter waiting at the US border, from there to be transported to Phoenix.

Devin, his brother Jake, and Christina's baby Faith, all uninjured, are now in the care of their aunts and grandmas in LaMora.

We lost 9 today. Right now we are waiting, for the morning, for answers, for justice.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one wondering what REALLY happened.   Out of curiosity, I looked to see where the Bontrager Family Singers go when they tour the Mennonite colonies of Chihuahua and neighboring states--I didn't see any location that was closer than about 120 km to Colonia LeBaron or Bavispe, though.

Here is the go fund me link for anyone interested: https://www.gofundme.com/f/lebaron-and-langford-families so far $32,000 have been raised. It gives their account of events, and lists those who died, their ages, and the survivors and their injuries.

I feel extremely bad for the family. I can’t imagine the pain.

That being said, I truly don’t get why fundie families put themselves in this situations going to dangerous areas to convert people, especially with little kids in tow. I just don’t think a few conversions are worth it.

@Howl thank you for those quotes. I bet trying to piece it all together will be very difficult because the children are the witnesses.

Did I miss where they named the dads of Christina's children? Rhonita and Howard were a couple and David and Dawna were a couple. I just saw that Christina's baby, that miraculously survived, is being cared for by aunts and grandmas. The reason I ask is because the LeBaron family tree is very interesting. My guess is all these families are closely related and that makes it even more tragic. (I see Dawna and Christina both have Langford as their last name)

I feel bad too but this isn't a conversion. The LeBaron family moved to that area back in 1924. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ervil_LeBaron  They moved down there to practice polygamy outside the US jurisdiction.

Morgan Langford's face  book page has the information I posted above.  At the bottom of the post there are photos of some of the surviving but injured children in the hospital.   If you click on this group of photos, it will take you to a video of one of the burned out SUVs, still smoldering, taken by the grandfather of four of the children who died.  It is RIDDLED with bullet holes.  I'm guessing it was sprayed with automatic weapons fire.

Read another fb post that listed the surviving children and their injuries.  It seems as though the children who were hidden as the oldest boy went for help all had gun shot wounds.

How horrific. Fucking drug cartels.

I just recently finished reading the memoirs Favorite Wife: Escape from Polygamy (by Susan Ray LeBaron Schmidt) and The Sound of Gravel (by Ruth LeBaron Warnier), and thought that the title of this thread was referencing the murders instigated by Ervil LeBaron. So sad that these new murders just happened.

FYI, both women above spent many years living in Colonia LeBaron - the former was the ex-wife of polygamist Vernal LeBaron, Ervil's brother and one of the early leaders of the fundy Mormon sect called the Church of the Firstborn, and the latter was the daughter of polygamist Joel LeBaron, another of Ervil's brothers and the prophet of the Church of the Firstborn, who was a victim of the early killings. I suspect the victims of this recent violence were related in some way to these women.

The first book tells the story of life in the colony (and other colonies like it) leading up to and just after Ervil's crime wave, and the second book mostly takes place after the early killings, since Ruthie was only three when Ervil had Joel killed.

And unintentionally, the book I'm now reading is a fictional murder mystery that happens to take place in Arizona, just north of the Mexican border in Coronada County, and features cartel violence and illegal immigration as topics. (It's Sulphur Springs, by William Kent Krueger, one of my favorite American authors who usually writes stories set in northern Minnesota.)

Holey Schmoley.  I had always thought Church of the Firstborn was a protestant sect.  There were several Church of the Firstborn congregations where I lived in SW Colorado.  They were well known because they did not believe in medical intervention.

Now on hold (audio book on CD) at my library.  I'm first on the hold list.

This is tragic, but that LeBarons were targeted doesn’t seem as odd as it normally would. These polygamist sects are far beyond rational thought. The LeBaron clan had an organized hit on several people in 1988 on four people. Ervil LeBaron was the “Mormon Manson.”  Colonia LeBaron was taking more than their fair share of water.

My thoughts are that if this is connected to a drug cartel, it’s for a reason and men/“saints” (all Mormon men who are in good standing with their church, which may or may not be the LDS.  The LeBarons left due to polygamist ideals, as did several other offshoots) were warned beforehand.
It’s beyond awful that innocent children died, and that so many lost their lives so brutally. But I suspect there’s a lot more to this story than “drug cartel shit gone wrong.” The LeBarons have been a troublesome group of immigrants to Mexico for quite awhile.

Remember how Mitt Romney was fluent in Spanish? It’s because his grandfather was a polygamist who fled to Mexico. Irene Spencer mentions seeing the Romney boys in their early Mexican endeavors.

Suggested reading for those interested:

Spencer, Irene, Cult Insanity; Shattered Dreams

Schmidt, Susan Ray, Favorite Wife: Escape From Polygamy

LeBarob, Anna, The Polygamist’s Daughter

Anderson, Scott. The 4  O’Clock Muders

and of course, Krakauer’s Under the Banner Of Heaven, for an overview of FLDS and the problem of the promise of the “One Mighty and Strong.”

Apologies for the lack of italics for the titles; I’m on a phone and technologically-impaired. ?‍♀️

<snip from a CNN article>

Quote

...a relative of one of those massacred told CNN on Tuesday the family is no stranger to drug cartel violence.

Kendra Lee Miller, whose sister-in-law Rhonita Maria Miller died in the attack, said, "Cartels have taken too many of our family members" and those killed Monday were "not the first."

Miller told CNN her family has recently been threatened by cartels over where it can travel.

Another book, The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner. It’s a gut wrenching read, but this woman (it’s a memoir) was wedded into the LeBaron clan. It was an eye opening, and there is likely far more to this horrid story!

Just looking for clarification on what I understand of what I have read. I have never heard of this family before.

The people that were killed were USA citizens. Do they live in the USA and were down there visiting? Or from what I am understanding were (dual) citizens having been born in mexico into this commune that was started in mexico after polygamy was banned. ??

If so, how do they keep their USA citizenship after so many generations have been born in Mexico? Do they still practice polygamy. I do like to read about the flds and the kingston clan but had never heard of this sect. Are they as bad?

This is a horrendous thing, with all these possible connections to something so infamous I am surprised no news media has picked up on it.

They live in an enclave in MX...@ one time it was a polygamist camp, not sure if that is still the case. These folks run back and forth  over the border to secure supplies and other resources, per the book that I read.

CNN reported that one man has been arrested, likely a part of a new, but still small, rival cartel.  I almost used the term start-up cartel, but that's not quite right.

I don't believe one man alone did this; hopefully more arrests will follow of people WHO ARE ACTUALLY GUILTY and not some random guys who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

They live there. I don't know how they keep their US citizenship and still be born in Mexico. According to Irene Spencer and Susan Ray Schmidt's books, yes they still practice polygamy. (Susan left after Irene. Susan was the favorite wife and shared a husband with Irene.) Irene left in 1978 and again in 1981; Susan left in 1976.

I have friends who are supposed to be getting married in Rocky Point, Mexico, in March. They are starting to rethink their plans to stay stateside. The venue they booked with is willing to refund 90% at this point. I wasn't going to the wedding anyways, because I actually have a family wedding the same weekend, but still.

I have a friend who goes to Mexico a couple of times a year. Not sure where, but some little place on a beach.  She lives in Phoenix and drives there.  You couldn't give me a free trip there.  Not worth it.  Especially driving through Mexico.

Article has photos of victims.  And they have one suspect - who had two hostages.

This article has so much info; and it's terrifying.  BUT, there is no way any cartel would NOT know that cars filled with women and children were not rival cartel members.  And this?

Quote

The Juarez cartel apparently wanted to send a message that it controlled the road into Chihuahua. It was this invasion force that the American mothers and their three vehicles drove into.

It was only after the first vehicle was shot up and set afire that 50 or 60 Sinaloa cartel gunmen showed up to see what had happened.

Also, this article has a linked article about the possibility that the family was used as bait to lure in the rival cartel.
