Students For Life President Explains Abortion To Her 10-Year-Old Son

I came across this video while catching up with our old friend "Catholic Traditional Looking for a Wife." It's unspeakably messed up and I straight up don't think this child was developmentally ready to hear about abortion, given that the questions he asks indicate that he's not solid on his basic sexual and reproductive education yet. (There's a nice comparison between surgical abortion and Minecraft, for crying out loud). I'm not proposing that children not learn about abortion, just that this isn't the way to do it. In any case, it's an eye-opening look at how young people are taught about abortion in the pro-life movement.

This is so sad and absolutely enraging. On a similar note, just this morning, I read about plans introduced by the Polish government to outlaw sexual education in schools.

She conveniently leaves out any explanation of the abortion pill--which makes up the vast majority of abortions. She also slams a family who had their embryos for IVF genetically tested for cystic fibrosis and then subsequently chose not to implant the affected embryos. She also compares slavery to abortion, which really confuses the child because *he* has cystic fibrosis and he gets it confused with slavery, thinking that people can just walk up to him and boss him around. It's just so, so bad from start to finish.

I just can’t watch this video, but I’d bet my life savings that this woman also supports (and votes for) policies that make reliable birth control less accessible...you know, the thing that prevents a lot of abortions.

WTF did I just watch?

I know a pro-life family that (in the father’s words) “factually, unemotionally explained” what an abortion is to their then-nine year old. Then the dad posted on Facebook how his only response was “why would someone do that to a baby?” while looking like he was going to cry, and how the dad felt the same way.

A couple of people commented asking if he also explained ectopic pregnancy, rape, trisomy 13 etc to his son.

I was quite taken aback when the little boy started talking about how abortion reminds him of something or other in Minecraft. It’s clear to me he wasn’t developmentally ready for this level of detail about abortions and a discussion about eugenics. I’m not saying that he’s not ready to know in the abstract sense, but it was clear to me he wasn’t ready from some of the questions he asked and his clear confusion about some concepts. I also feel as though she put way too much content into one discussion; he probably would have been better off if they’d separated the abortion discussion from the one about eugenics. That’s a lot of heavy material, especially when he’s someone with a disability. I find eugenics horrifying as a disabled 37-year-old, I can’t imagine digesting that at ten. But it doesn’t make for good YouTube videos, I guess. But It’s clear he needed time to process, and his mom didn’t give him that.

When my daughter was about 9, she was watching a TV movie with my mom. Part of the plot involved a young woman with a brain aneurysm becoming pregnant. Her evil MIL blackmails the girl’s doctor so he won’t tell the girl that carrying a pregnancy to term would probably kill her, because the MIL wants a child to control.

My daughter asked my mom what abortion was, and my mom said it was a terrible thing.  And my daughter responded, “But what if that were ME? Would you feel the same way if *I* could die from being pregnant?”

 ETA I just watched as much of this video as I could stand, and it pissed the absolute fucking hell out of me.  @ViolaSebastian is absolutely right: this little guy is nowhere near developmentally ready for this “discussion.” I’ve always firmly believed that you don’t cram this kind of information down a child’s throat; you wait till they come up with questions and you answer them in a developmentally appropriate way, never giving them more info than they can assimilate. (Or, if they come out with something that’s way off base, you give them the correct information in the same manner.)

This woman has the same damn agenda as Anna “Marie” Maxwell, who takes her small children to anti-abortion rallies and teaches them, “We love little babies. But some mommies go to doctors to get them to kill their little babies.” Fuck these women into next week. 
 

Whether you’re in favor of full reproductive rights or not, you have to agree that this is adult business. Not everything is appropriate for children.

Your daughter seems extraordinarily smart and emphatic IMO! But what a shitty situation. That’s why RESPONSIBLE (I feel like JRod, capitalizing a word in the middle of the sentence, but I really need to emphasize it) adults don’t say such things to kids. Either you discuss it age-appropriately and emphatically or you make sure the topic doesn’t arise at all.

Real-Life Sex Ed Tidbits:

1) When my baby sister was 8, she informed me, “If you’re poor, you can’t have a baby.” When I asked her where she got that idea, she said, “Because you don’t have enough money to pay a doctor to cut it out of your stomach.” She had gotten this ridiculous info from a couple of older girls in the neighborhood. I told her that babies normally come out the vagina, and our mother went batshit that I dared mention to an innocent child that the vagina existed. (Joke was on her: One time baby sister had told me about some irritation in her ladybits, and said, “It’s not in the urine hole or in the bowel movement hole, it’s in the deep, deep hole in the middle.”)

2) My grandson was about that age and watching a show in which a vet spayed a dog. “They probably wouldn’t do that to people, though,” he said. “They’d probably go to a doctor and get some kind of pill.” I told him, yes—that absolutely was something a woman could  do: get a prescription for a pill that would prevent pregnancy, and then stop taking it when she wanted to get pregnant. I wasn’t about to bombard him with info about implants and IUDs and tubal ligations and vasectomies at that age; plenty of time to answer those questions later.

To the bolded: Don't get me wrong, I do think formal sex ed in schools is important. But I also think it's cute how the gov't doesn't consider that these kids are internet savvy.    If they go online to satisfy curiosity and have questions answered, they will find much wilder stuff than they would have been told in the classroom as well.

Speaking of curiosity, do you mind if I ask what your mom answered your daughter?   Also FJers, let's get on that downvote button (for the video).  If you stop the video from playing as soon as you bring it up, I dont think it will give her a view.  But someone correct me if i'm wrong about that.

The internet can help, but we can’t give children the responsibility to educate themselves.

There needs to be a place, the classroom, where everyone has access to appropriate information. And in this context, I say appropriate because firstly, classes at school need to cover various really really important aspects such as different birth control methods, consent, STDs, etc. Secondly, kids and teens need to get the info they need and can handle. At home, they might google stuff and end up on porn sites that give them a wrong idea about sex or they read religiously motivated articles on the matter that don’t educate them either.

There's also a lot of bad or incorrect information out there. We can't leave it up to porn to educate kids on sex--because that's what's happening right now. Kids aren't going to the Mayo Clinic website or Google scholar...they're watching porn. And porn, needless to say, is not a good reflection of reality.

So, what I'm hearing is that the Polish government is potentially wanting a Guatamalan situation?  The one where there is a high rate of teenage pregnancy partially due to the fact that girls don't know that inserting A into B can lead to C.
