Do Evangelicals really think Trump is the Messiah?

Recommended Posts

Mods: please move to Quverful of Politics it this topic isn't appropriate here.

I didn't believe this the first time it showed up on my FB feed but now Snopes has verified that it's real. A billboard in St. Louis, Missouri featuring the face of Donald Trump, with a banner reading "The Word became Flesh. . .John 1:14" and "Make the Gospel great again".

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-christ-billboard-st-louis

The entire verse reads

Quote

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

I wondered [not really] if I'd misunderstood the meaning of that verse for most of my life so I looked it up on https://zondervanacademic.com/blog/word-became-flesh. Nope. I didn't misunderstand the verse.  The people who made that billboard are essentially saying that Donald J. Trump is the son of God, made flesh, and dwelling among us. Which, now that I think of it, goes a long way to explaining why Evangelicals are so happy to ignore the teachings of Christ--he was an imposter, and DJT is the true Messiah.

I think many view him as a type of messiah. He has come to save them from the liberals.

Maybe @3_and_counting can chime in. I know she said she isn't a republican but I bet she is close to a lot of people who support Trump and has a better perspective on why he is so loved and supported.

I will literally never understand it. The man is the very opposite of everything the Bible teaches, yet he is worshiped. Nothing he does is criticized. They will stand by him no matter what. There could come out that he actually helped run that child sex ring and I bet a good chunk of his Christian followers would stand by him. They would rather vote for a pedophile than a liberal.

Yeah, it's pretty fucking weird that they think of Trump as the Messiah, despite the many, many sins he's openly and continuously committed, while at the same time, they think of Obama, a highly moral man if ever there was one, as the Antichrist.

But then again, these are the same people that focus more on the Old Testament than the New, and King David, a great sinner, is said to be the most beloved of God.

It makes no sense, and it never will. I hope there is a god and s/he casts them all into the pit for their hypocrisy.

I chalk this up the the rampant racism in a good bit of Evangelical America. Trump has always been a joke when he ran for president. No one wanted to vote for such a disgusting human. But after a black president who helped gave people health care, society changing to accept gay and trans people, white people starting to become a minority, these people who supposedly follow Jesus wanted hate. They jumped at someone who promised them the hate they always desired. Evil became good to them. They sold their soul for the chance to hurt the people they don't like and get power.

I don't think that evangelicals and fundies will ever truly recover from this. Their hypocrisy and lack of morals are being shown to the world. They are flying that hate flag high. This church was handing out tracts at a park I go to a couple months back and I asked their thoughts on Trump. When they started gushing I pointed out how he is living in sin, has never repented from any of his sin so therefore it must be that these people are fine win people living in sin. They stomped off in a huff. They can't defend their support of Trump when pressed on it. This will haunt them long after Trump.

Fundies have always wanted to dominate and control others weaker than themselves so they’re getting off on Fuck Face and his cruelty towards others.

I hope Reich wing Christianity never recovers from this and that actual Christianity makes a return.

White Evangelicals, This is Why People Are Through With You

Quote

I need to tell you something: People have had it with you.

They’re done.

They want nothing to do with you any longer, and here’s why:

They see your hypocrisy, your inconsistency, your incredibly selective mercy, and your thinly veiled supremacy.

For eight years they watched you relentlessly demonize a black President; a man faithfully married for 26 years; a doting father and husband without a hint of moral scandal or the slightest whiff of infidelity.

They watched you deny his personal faith convictions, argue his birthplace, and assail his character—all without cause or evidence. They saw you brandish Scriptures to malign him and use the laziest of racial stereotypes in criticizing him.

And through it all, White Evangelicals—you never once suggested that God placed him where he was,
you never publicly offered prayers for him and his family,
you never welcomed him to your Christian Universities,
you never gave him the benefit of the doubt in any instance,
you never spoke of offering him forgiveness or mercy,
your evangelists never publicly thanked God for his leadership,
your pastors never took to the pulpit to offer solidarity with him,
you never made any effort to affirm his humanity or show the love of Jesus to him in any quantifiable measure.

You violently opposed him at every single turn—without offering a single ounce of the grace you claim as the heart of your faith tradition. You jettisoned Jesus as you dispensed damnation on him.

And yet you give carte blanche to a white Republican man so riddled with depravity, so littered with extramarital affairs, so unapologetically vile, with such a vast resume of moral filth—that the mind boggles.

And the change in you is unmistakable. It has been an astonishing conversion to behold: a being born again.

With him, you suddenly find religion.
With him, you’re now willing to offer full absolution.
With him, all is forgiven without repentance or admission.
With him you’re suddenly able to see some invisible, deeply buried heart.
With him, sin has become unimportant, compassion no longer a requirement.
With him, you see only Providence.

And White Evangelicals, all those people who have had it with you—they see it all clearly.

They recognize the toxic source of your inconsistency.

They see that pigmentation and party are your sole deities.
They see that you aren’t interested in perpetuating the love of God or emulating the heart of Jesus.
They see that you aren’t burdened to love the least, or to be agents of compassion, or to care for your Muslim, gay, African, female, or poor neighbors as yourself.
They see that all you’re really interested in doing, is making a God in your own ivory image and demanding that the world bow down to it.
They recognize this all about white, Republican Jesus—not dark-skinned Jesus of Nazareth.

And I know you don’t realize it, but you’re digging your own grave in these days; the grave of your very faith tradition.

Your willingness to align yourself with cruelty is a costly marriage. Yes, you’ve gained a Supreme Court seat, a few months with the Presidency as a mouthpiece, and the cheap high of temporary power—but you’ve lost a whole lot more.

You’ve lost an audience with millions of wise, decent, good-hearted, faithful people with eyes to see this ugliness.
You’ve lost any moral high ground or spiritual authority with a generation.
You’ve lost any semblance of Christlikeness.
You’ve lost the plot.
And most of all you’ve lost your soul.

I know it’s likely you’ll dismiss these words. The fact that you’ve even made your bed with such malevolence, shows how far gone you are and how insulated you are from the reality in front of you.

But I had to at least try to reach you. It’s what Jesus would do.

Maybe you need to read what he said again—if he still matters to you.

That was truly an amazing article @Black Aliss! The people who support Trump truly have lost their souls. They are making a deal with an actual devil, and no one ever wins in that situation. But at this point they are in too deep, they can't suddenly have morals and take issue with Trump's vile behavior. Even if people do recognize that Trump is a monster, I suspect entirely too many evangelicals have too much pride to take a stand against evil and say they will side with the liberals who don't want to lock babies in cages.

My family , with the exception of me , is Republican .  From what I have gathered from them , and other white evangelical conservatives , Trump is seen as being either a Cyrus type figure  { https://www.vox.com/identities/2018/3/5/16796892/trump-cyrus-christian-right-bible-cbn-evangelical-propaganda , https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/mar/23/cyrus-prophecy-evangelical-support-donald-trump }  , or the very least was the lesser of the two evils , due to the issue of Supreme Court appointees . { https://religionnews.com/2016/09/26/4-evangelicals-4-different-ways-to-consider-donald-trump/ , and from a critical , satirical standpoint https://mereorthodoxy.com/evangelicals-endorsing-donald-trump/  }  So yeah , they are so single mindedly focused on being anti-abortion and pro-gun that it overrides other concerns , such as Trump's character .

I've been watching "The Family" on Netflix, about the C Street/ Fellowship group that puts on the Prayer Breakfast and provided housing to a number of evangelical congressmen. I would recommend it if you're interested in the relationship between the religious right and political power. They basically operate with the attitude that anyone who advances their agenda is God's chosen, no matter what their personal life is like. Trump is certainly not the first crook they've endorsed.

Well, apparently at least some of them are upset that Trump says "goddamn" at his rallies. I wonder how the ones who think he's the Messiah reconcile that? Hm, strike that, I think cognitive dissonance is already required for these folks; what's one more?

Hey, Trump can be twice-divorced, cheat on his 3rd wife right after she gives birth to his son, shack up with strippers and pay them to keep silent, "grab 'em by the pussy," whatever, that's all fine. But "take the Lord's name in vain"? That's apparently a bridge too far.

Just binge watched this. All white and male, gives you some idea of what they believe. They admire the leadership qualities of Hitler.  This group eptitomizes dangerous self-righteousness and crosses the divide between church and state. And several of them are not paragons of virtue.

I've watched this as well and was going to suggest it if others hadn't yet. One of the things that really struck me was "The Family's" insistence that you don't need to be perfect to be a man of God. Two of the examples they used to go into this was Mark Sanford of "went to walk the Appalachian trail and somehow ended up with his penis inside of a vagina in a bedroom in Argentina instead" fame and former senator John Ensign, of "won't stop boning his aide's wife" fame, respectively. Allegedly, "The Family" were instrumental in getting these men elected, and despite their serious failings, "The Family" was adamant that they not resign after the shit hit the fan. Their reasoning was that these men were special chosen by God (I believe they used the words "anointed by God") to be in a position of leadership and further God's kingdom on earth. Now, the cynic in me believes that it's less that they were anointed by God and more that they wanted them to remain in power because they participated in "The Family" and were thus within the control of that organization, but maybe that's just me. In any case, it shines some light on the way that evangelicals might view Trump. Sure, he's not a perfect man by any means, but he's been chosen by God to further the Christian agenda, so his past, present, and future sins should and will be overlooked.

Imo evangelicals like Trump because he puts the minorities in "their place" both by being racist and sexist and that's enough for the "good ol boys" not to mention that he appoints hateful judges for them.

Have you read "Born a Crime" by Trevor Noah? He talks about growing up in South Africa and apartheid. His book reminds me of what is happening in the US today, Trump (and friends) want to put people in their place, people of color, immigrants, middle class and poor people. If you keep everyone against each other they won't rise up together against the real problem.

I truly believe that evangelicals are the way they are because in their (very) small minds, they can feel pious and look down on everyone else. They know the TRUTH!!! Unlike the rest of us heathens, they will enter eternity through pearly gates, live in mansions and walk streets of gold.

Trump lives in mansions, behind gates and while his streets might not be made of gold, his NY penthouse is, so maybe they view it as he has shown them a glimpse of things to come. That's why perhaps some see him as the Messiah.

But, i pretty much think most are assholes and he gives them the freedom to be bigoted assholes, not only without repercussions, but he praises them for it.

Happy Shavuot to all those who celebrate! I have no idea why, but for some reason God commands us to eat ice cream. Well, dairy. So eat cheese! Eat pizza! Eat ice cream! Eat cheesecake! It has no calories because God commands us to do so!

I know it’s just a beauty contest but this is the 4th time Jamaica was snubbed in favour of 5 contestants who were clones (with the exception of Peru)
Still can’t believe Mexico won. Even Olivia Culpo was looking at the results confused😂
Shoutout to Haiti, Canada, Thailand and Myanmar who were also snubbed.

I've somehow invested in this year's Miss Universe pageant. After watching the prelims my favorites are:
      1. Jamaica (naturally lol but she's doing well)
      2. Haiti (love her energy)
      3. Great Britain
      4. Bahamas
      5. Canada (a beauty! absolutely stunning!)
      6. Japan (adorable)
      7. Cameroon (also adorable w/ an amazing costume)
      8. Myanmar (seems sweet)
      9. Vietnam
      10. Thailand
      11. USA (I'm rooting for everybody black lol)
Not a fan of these but I think they'll place: South Africa, Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Peru, Australia, Denmark, Ireland, Dom Rep.
If they make Zozi (the current Ms. Universe) give the crown to a white girl from Pretoria, I will scream.
