Indian priest blames autism on parents lifestyle

Another priest who went to the Benny XVI school of theology

Quote

A priest of the Eastern Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, which is based at Kerela in India and has about 4,000 members in Ireland, Fr Valanmahal has been preaching that the increased incidence of autism and hyperactivity in children is due to their parents’ lifestyle.

“Why does this generation have autism and hyperactivity? That is to say, mentally retarded children are in abundance,” Fr Valanmahal asked in a sermon.

“Adultery, masturbation, homosexuality, porn, if you are addicted to these, I say to you in the name of God. . .when you get married and have children, there is a high possibility of bearing these type of children,” he said.

“They lead an animal-like life. They copulate like animals. They bear children like animals. Therefore those children also, will be like animals,” he said.

I have a suggestion about what this fucker should go do but it's not very Christ like so I'll leave it to his imagination.

When I was a kid/teen you'd say "masturbation will make you deaf" really fast and jumbled to make the other person say what? Turns out, we we're onto something. Apparently not deaf, but it will make you autistic.

Did he really say that autistic children are like animals? I am at a loss for words. Oh no I have one, vaffanculo! You little PoS! Who the fuck do you think you are to decide who is human and who is not? People with your ideology were tried in Nuremberg decades ago. I really really hope that the RCC hierarchies will have some words with the guy and provide to send him as an hermit somewhere.

Excellent choice of words. Vaffanculo is exactly what I’d say to this fucker if I ran in to him on the street.

Hermit is about the best thing for him. I wouldn’t inflict him on any community. This is why we need to have women ordained in the Roman church. They would bring a compassion and tenderness that is too often missing amongst the all male clergy.

Fucking ugh.

This priest appears to be suggesting that children are being punished for the choices of their parents?

That being the case, he needs to return to the Bible and do some reading - as a matter of urgency.  He wouldn't be the first person to misinterpret Exodus 20:5 and related verses in Deuteronomy,  but there's no excuse for a priest getting that wrong.

Wrong, hurtful and decidedly non-christian!

Another reason why I am not a practicing Catholic, I know gradually some priests are becoming more progressive and I'm glad some of the Irish Churches have cancelled him.

I attended my nephew's communion two weeks ago and while the service was a nice service, it didn't make me think I'm going to start attending mass regularly.

If I'm an animal, what kind am I? Cool animals only, no boring animals.

On a more serious note, if you treat human beings like animals, they'll behave like animals.

It was a common belief that “monstrous births” were the result of the parents having sex on a fast day or a Sunday...in the Middle Ages. The view that a disabled person was being punished for something their parents did or something they did in a previous life (in the case of Vedic religions) was quite common. Even today, this sort of sentiment exists in a secular fashion, with parents being shamed and blamed for vaccinating their kids or not following the latest dietary fad.

I suspect that a good number of monastics in the past were on the autism spectrum because monasteries had a strict schedule and if you just wanted to be left alone to say the rosary all day, that was seen as a virtue rather than a pathology. Joseph of Cupertino, the patron saint of autistic children, appears to have been like this:

I admit that I’m pretty tired of the constant barrage of people on the internet claiming they know what causes autism. I swear you can find every cause imaginable. I wish people would just leave it to the professionals. Hell even the professionals get it wrong at times.

I am especially offended by the attitude taken by this priest , considering that I myself fall on both the autistic , and obsessive compulsive spectrums ( ADHD is classified as part of the obsessive compulsive spectrum ,  by the DSM ) . I am not mentally retarded , and like a brute beast .  And what he said about my parents is really beyond the pale .  His remarks were even worse than attributing autism to " refrigerator mothers "  .   And now there have even been people tauting bleach as a cure for autism , as if autism is something that could ever be cured in the first place .  https://patriciadevlin.com/2018/08/26/bleach-peddlers-claim-to-operate-under-vatican-law-in-ireland/    So , no , autism is not caused by parental transgressions .  https://www.patheos.com/blogs/throughcatholiclenses/2019/07/autism-is-not-due-to-parental-sin-fr-valanmahal/   Lastly , with all that said , neglectful behavior can cause reactive attachment disorder , which probably what has been mistakenly conflated with autism , by both this priest , as well as the likes of the late Dr. Leo Kanner . But even in that case , the children are not cognitively impaired .

Can the Catholic Church make him step down? This is gross and harmful.

In answer to your question , based upon what I have read , yes I do think that he could potentially face official censure from the Vatican , although forced laicization would be reserved for the severous violations of canon law .  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_of_clerical_state_(Catholic_Church)  , https://www.catholicworldreport.com/2017/03/15/what-does-it-actually-mean-for-a-priest-to-be-laicized/   , http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14345b.htm

It says something that I've given up being offended when idiots describe people like me as "retarded" or "brute beasts". Heck, I'm tempted to show the next twatwaffle who describes people with ASD as "wild animals" my incredibly boring life. Probably it wouldn't change their mind.

I much prefer what Temple Grandin says about autism:

Quote

If by some magic, autism had been eradicated from the face of the earth, then men would still be socializing in front of a wood fire at the entrance to a cave.

They may ask why nature or God created such horrible conditions as autism, manic depression, and schizophrenia. However, if the genes that caused these conditions were eliminated there might be a terrible price to pay.

If the gene for autism did not exist, them we would not have Silicon Valley.

My daughter, the mom of our grandson, pointed out when she was visiting recently that she suspects that several members of our family are on the spectrum.

I refuse to think of my daughter who happens to be on the autism spectrum as disabled. She is definitely more intelligent than this man. She is more compassionate and loving by far.

One of my uncles was his generation's black sheep of the family.  He had a son with Down syndrome and me for a niece.  Based on what I'd read in the bible, little me said we were his curse.  The family agreed.

I also prefer what Temple Grandin said about autism, as it's true. I'm on the autism spectrum myself, and it's possible that others in my family would be on the spectrum as well, such as one great grandmother who was described as "eccentric." She died before I was born, so I never knew her.

Yeah, as someone who has both ASD and ADHD this guy is just a cunt. I’m not mentally retarded, thankyouverymuch. Even animals are more intelligent than this dude.
